Gruden on McKenzie

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, April 16th, 2013 at 2:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Asked Jon Gruden on a conference call about Reggie McKenzie’s philosophy of identifying high-character players and the whether any of the athletes he had on his ESPN shows fit that criteria, and here was his response:

“I think Reggie’s going to do fine. He’s got an unbelievable pedigree. He’s been around the best football people in the business, guys like Ron Wolf and others. No question about that. He has a background with the Raiders being a former player with Oakland. And I know football character and character is highly touted when it comes to finding and developing players, and Reggie McKenzie is going to find guys that I think fit that criteria. I think all of the kids that we have in here this year have high football character.

“I also feel like every once in a while you need some characters. You need a couple guys that are a little off the beaten path, maybe guys that live in the left lane to a degree. But the Raiders are rebuilding. Obviously, they’ve made dramatic changes on their roster. They’ve let go of some veterans that are well‑recognized and I’m sure leaders on that football team. So not only do you have to find character, you better find some playmakers, because everybody else in the league has them. ”

That is true…LA is 19-8 since. Funny thing is D’Antoni predicted that the team needed to end the season 20-8 to get in…wow! A friggen swammie, I’d give him that! LOL

Gradually trading out of the first round sounds like a terrible idea to me. This team needs first round talent. Depth will come and go. You need to get elite players when you are in position to do so.

First round Talent is not building it right, 2nd tier talent is the new wave.

Every year fans get their jimmies in a knot over mid-late round players and every year most of those guys don’t end up being any better than a backups.

    1st round cooper
    2nd round moore
    3rd round hankins
    4th round kasa

    wouldn’t be mad at that

But he’s clutch, can create his own shot and create for others down the stretch in tight games. That’s where Kobe was most valuable.

    FS is a huge need.

We need a Center Fielder out there, especially one skilled in defending the deep ball.

So sick of seeing these deep passes, the other teams WR’s go up for the ball, and our CB’s and Safeties are flailing around at about their waist.

  • RAIDERMAN99

Bergs started that week 17 game that we didn’t allow any sacks in, and we were 3 for 3 in the red zone.

  • RaiderRockstar

the Raiders will trade down, if Reggie has an opportunity.

I called the Palmer trade long before it happened, as well as the full on re-build including slicing almost every “out of whack” contract on the roster.

DMAC & Seabass are next. Perhaps even Jacoby Ford (aka Tony Cox)

Reggie will trade down and acquire more picks. We need 10 impact players, not 1. Reggie will trust his scouts and his gut to get the right guys to help us acheive the overall goal. winning

    Exactly.

Why I don’t buy into this notion of having to trade down at all costs to “fill holes”.

WTF kind of holes are you filing with 4th and 5th round picks?

Yeah, people will point to the 5th round picks that make Pro Bowls, but most of the time they are backups and ST guys.

And on a shredded ankle last season?

Sounds pretty tough to me. I know he wasn’t great for us and didn’t meet expectations but you’d think he was a 9Ball Donkey player for as much love as he gets from the NATION…

We do have Howard this year, it’ll be up to him and Gasol to keep Westbrook guys out the paint.
