Pryor ready to ‘battle’ for starting QB spot

Quarterback Carson Palmer blocked Terrelle Pryor’s path to the playing field in Pryor’s first two NFL seasons. Now that Palmer is gone, Pryor is doing everything he can to show that he is worthy of being the Raiders starter in 2013 and beyond.
“I’m trying to find a way to get better every day, through mechanics, through being sharper on pinpoint accuracy,” Pryor said Thursday in Alameda, where he took a break from the team’s offseason workout program. “I take those things serious to get better and just for the team overall. I haven’t taken a break and probably won’t.”
Pryor is regarded as one of the hardest workers on the Raiders roster. As evidence, he routinely gathers some of his receivers and works out with them at Laney College in Oakland on off days.
He also has spent considerable time during this offseason working with quarterback coaches in an attempt to refine his footwork, reads and accuracy.
It’s all part of Pryor’s quest to go from a third-round pick in the 2011 supplemental draft to a starter in the NFL.
The Raiders traded Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals earlier this month. At the same time, they traded for sixth-year quarterback Matt Flynn.
Yet, coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie are hesitant to anoint Flynn the unquestioned starter, even though they invested two draft picks and $6.5 million in Flynn for 2013.
“Whether Carson was going to be here or not, it doesn’t matter,” Pryor said. “I have to battle.”
Allen and McKenzie said there’s an “open competition” at quarterback, which makes sense given Flynn started only two games his first five seasons and Pryor one.
Pryor is taking those words to heart.
“Like coach says, ‘Cream rises to the top, no matter what. No matter what the position, everyone is going to battle.’ … We need to compete. By competing, you bring out the best in everybody.”

Pryor could be great or he could be horrible. Flynn doesn’t have that potential.

They both played mop up duty, stats were slightly in Flynn’s favor.

    Slightly.

If Pryor’s work ethic is as advertised, then he’s either really stupid or John DeFilppo is the worst QB coach in Football history. Don’t know much about Pryor’s smarts, but do know Filppo history so i’m guessing it’s him.

I love how you guys rate these QBs like they have this deep body of work from which you glean your opinions. Nobody (especially on this blog) really knows much about either of them. You have your favorites based on whatever personal criteria you can relate to them and that is where you are all so stupid. I am not wanting to be friends with either one of them. I just want to watch them win games and I don’t much care which one it is. When it’s all said and done, there is a good chance that it won’t be either of them who gets us over the hump anyway.

You have a couple of good points, but just the fact that Flynn got some cash tells me that he will start. We traded for him and he’ been developed in GB to me that puts him ahead of Pryor.

I believe that, it’s not just the Palmer haters but it’s also the folks here that don’t want to give Reg/DA a chance. You get the feeling that they would rather lose just to prove they’re right. Evry GM hits and every GM makes mistakes but it’s the teams that hang in there with their coaches and GM’s and give them a chance that win.

Word is they’ll just play Joeckel at RT for now

  • JLofty

That SI article went a long way to report what the state of the Raiders was in 2011 but I am going to put it terms maybe some of the posters in here with really high specific gravities can understand:

The Raiders for the last 50 years operated like the local mom and pop burger joint using cash registers and telephones in a city filled with McDonalds and In-n-Outs using modern (proven) business processes and technology.
When mom & pops were in there prime, it was awesome. Best burger in town.
When Pops got old and crazy and started doing funny things to the secret sauce – not so much. Mom tried her best to hold it together but there was no command and control, the young kids who worked there harder to train and depend on. It all fell apart.
    Sound familar?

Not saying Reggie hasn’t f*d up some but the task he faced in late ’11 or early ’12 was MONUMENTAL.

Not just take over an organization, it was BUILD ONE!!!

The only computers at 1220 Harbor Bay Parkway were used by Run-Run to surf porn all day. (not kidding I know some IT people used to work there)

Now RAIDER fans, pull your head out and get on board. Good things are coming, just might take a little longer than hiring a new GM to take over for Bill Polian or Parcells just having retired…
