Allen: `I feel like it’s Christmas Eve’

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 25th, 2013 at 11:26 am in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen took a couple of minutes to take questions on the NFL Network hours before the Raiders are scheduled to make their first pick Thursday:

Q: You had to wait last year until the very last pick on Friday night last year. What’s it like to be preparing for a first-round pick:

Allen: We’re a little bit busier right now then we were last year. I feel like it’s Christmas Eve and we’re waiting for the opportunity to open up our Christmas presents when the draft starts.

Q: What’s under the tree at No. 3?

Allen: There’s a lot of gifts under there, we’ve just got to figure out which one’s for us.

Q: No Tommy Kelly, No Richard Seymour, you need a D-lineman. Is this a defensive line pick at 3?

Allen: I’ll tell you, here’s going to be our philosophy and it won’t ever change from this _ we’re going to take the best player available when it comes our time to pick. We feel very comfortable about where our board is set, what’s available there at No.3, and we’ll pick the best player that we think can have the biggest impact on our team.

Q: How many calls has Reggie McKenzie fielded about the pick?

Allen: He’s been pretty busy. He’s kept his cell phone up to his ear so there’s been a lot of communication about potentially anyone that might want to come up to No. 3 and we’ll let that play out as we go along. There’s still a lot of time left in the day. The great thing for us is we feel very comfortable about where we’re at at No. 3. We feel very comfortable at what we think is going to be available there to us and so we’re just going to sit there and we’ll let the day play out.

Q: Would you like to get out? Logic dictates you need picks, you need players, with so many veterans leaving, you need the bodies, don’t you?

Allen: I think you’ve got to weigh out the cost-benefit analysis at what’s going to be there at No.3 and what we can gain from backing out of the pick. That’s the thing that we’ve got to look at when you look at backing up in the draft.

Mingo is a beast, top performer at the combine amongst LB’s for:

    40 yd dash: 4.58 sec
    Vertical Jump: 37 inch
    Broad Jump: 128 inch
    3 cone drill: 6.84 sec

Too bad Reggie already hitched his wagon to scrub LB’s through free agency. Don’t see him drafting Mingo.

Depends on the offer…..Cause you know DAMN well, there’ll BE one.

526, I think Al would have drafted Star.. rush the passer.. agreed about CB’s lacking health\star power\top speed, not that we shouldn’t maybe draft one of them now that he is gone.

Star has the “looks good getting off the bus” that Al loved.

Joeckel sure looks solid… course, so did Gallery.

“Floyd’s statistics are by no means elite (26 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks in two years)” Translation: He’s no Warren Sapp.

Perfect, lets get him then, I’m in no need for another Warren Sapp..
