Dennis Allen on D.J. Hayden

Raiders coach Dennis Allen answered questions from the media after the selection of D.J. Hayden with the 12th pick of the draft:

Q: Some tense moments after determining he was your guy at 3, to have to wait until 12?

Allen: It was a tense feeling there in the draft room. We felt like there was a chance he was still going to be there. The good thing is there were some other guys we would have felt comfortable with, but D.J. was our guy we identified very early on in the process. He was the guy we were really interested in at the third pick and we were fortunate to get him where we got him and picked up another pick.

Q: As an old defensive back, what do you think when you put the tape on?

Allen: Well, I think he’s, the one quality that you look at when you’re looking at corners, is you’re looking for guys that can cover, and this guy can cover. He can cover man-to-man, he’s got great speed, he’s got great quickness, he’s got the ability to play both off and press coverage, and really one of the things I really look at is, how does the guy make plays on the ball, specifically the ball down the field, and he does a tremendous job of that.

Q: Can you think of an NFL equivalent?

Allen: Well, I think there’s obviously, I look at him as one of the top corners. I think he’s got a chance to be really good and a difference maker for us, so when you look at the top corners in this league, that’s who I see him ending up being like.

Q: Best available player, how important to fortify this defense?

Allen: Obviously we’ve got needs throughout this team we want to make sure we take care of and I think it was a great thing that we were able to get an impact player at a position, specifically defensively, the things that you look for, is how do you affect the quarterback? And you do that through rush or coverage and this guy, we felt like, was the top cover corner in the draft.

Q: When you spent time with him, how much time did you spend with him?

Allen: A pretty good portion of the day when he was here. He spent a lot of time with myself. He spent a lot of time with the assistant coaches. We got a chance to meet with him, talk football with him, and see how much information he could retain and how much volume of information he could take in. The guy’s all football. He loves football. He’s going to be a guy, obviously, you’ve seen with what he’s been through, that he’s willing to work, and those are all things . . . a lot of people talk about character, this guy’s the type of character that we’re looking for.

whats your view on the DJ hayden?? legit evaluation on what the raiders did at 12

impact player at an impact position.

i had been saying that i was searching for a player that excited me. it wasn’t easy.

i hadn’t really considered hayden but they say he was actually the best cb in the draft and that’s a good thing.

They got needs all over this team, especially after jettisoning their DT’s (Seymour, Kelly, Shaughnessy). and they signed 2 somewhat proven cornerbacks in Porter and Jenkins, plus a ton of LB’s. we need interior lineman. I swear to God I felt like AD just reached out from the grave to curse us once again…..

    I’m not going to lie…

When it comes draft time, I always take the fastest man-to-man oriented corner back — in Madden.

For those that said Machete McKenzie was not like Al Davis, the Hayden pick (5-foot-11, 190, 4.33 40-yard dash, six picks, six forced fumbles and 11 tackles for loss across 22 college starts) is eerily Davis like.

  • EMRaiders

For the record, everybody at NFL network agreed that Hayden was a good pick. They thought we would take Floyd, but thought Hayden was the smart pick.

    A cornerback – REALLY?

    —–

The AFC West has Phillip Rivers, Alex Smith and Peyton Manning. Not to mention the high level of WRs that are on the Chiefs, Chargers, and new Broncos.
    ——————————-
CB covers one guy on the field. Best case scenario, Hayden shuts down his mine. Cool. But we’re not a CB away from being good. A DT effects the passing game differently, especially one like Star or even Richardson, who you can move around the line.

Hayden is gonna need a lot of pick 6s to make up for the value we lost by not taking Star or at the least, Richardson.

Reggie fell in love with a guy and picked him, regardless of value to the current team hes GM for. Maybe he thinks hes still working for GB and we have Raji and Matthews. Im sorry, this was just a poor, poor decision. And I LIKE Hayden. But even getting Revis right here would have been a waste. We could have done so much better.

    Reggies not impressing.

Meanwhile, Desmond Trufant, who I think is the truly the bet CB in this draft, went at 22. To ATL, a team thats already competing. CB is cool to pick, but you gotta know when, and if thats the best value for your team. Reggie clearly doesnt know that.

Hayden is closer to having a heart attack than Lotulelie. And the game starts/ends in the trenches. I do not care how well you cover, if you’ve got no upfront pressure/run stoppage, then guys like Manning will kill you. I don’t care how fast you run or well you cover. You will get beat. Time and space gives everything to the QB’s these days. You can’t get to them or pressure them, then you are toast.

  • RaiderFan-n-KC

One guy who is very difficult to pick off because he’s “cerebral” (Manning).

-Oakland picked up Tracy Porter (aka Manning Killer) and Usama young who was on the same SB winning team that gave Manning a hard time. Add Hayden in the mix, Oakland should make Manning look like Tyler Palko

Another guy who is very difficult to pick off because he checks down or throws it away every play (Smith).

-Unlike SF, Smith will have a good WR core in KC and an excellent OL system that produces Pro-Bowl linemen. All the more reason to fortify the DBs in Oakland.

So that leaves Rivers, who the Raiders have already had no problem picking off for years.

-I have now issue with that statement, Oakland has no problems getting turnovers from Rivers, but they do have a problem with Gates and their WRs gaining 20+ yards catches on their Defense

  • jballa1223

I have no problem with the pick…..it’s difficult right now because we have heard Floyd and Star for awhile now and this kid kind of came out of nowhere. Aside from his injury, he looks legit. Let’s not forget our “solid” starting CB’s where backups with their prior teams and are signed to one year deals. This pick will not make us an instant contender, but nobody we picked would have. Unfortunately, I fear this is the type of unknown pick that will give the idiots out there all they need to fire Reggie and DA before the season has even started. I’m interested to see what we do now that we have a second round pick. There will still be many good players on the board at that time and I’m hoping we address the D-Line there. Relax all. Think for the future. This season is about gathering talent, not winning games. We now have a legitimate (hopefully) cover corner and should be able to bring in more talent with the 2nd round pick. Would have liked to see another pick in the trade though.

This is a good pick. I think this guy is going to be a star. We will take a DE in the second round. We signed DT and Linebackers. We Needed a CB and a DE to pass rush. We also need a Guard and OT and TE. Those will be the direction we head. We may take Kiko Alonso.

Yo, I read these blogs everyday and we have some of the worst fans in the NFL universe. Weeks ago everyone was hollering we need corners we need corners. Now we get one of the top 3 corners in the draft plus a 2nd rd pick and everyone is pissed. Do you guys understand we will have abt 50 mil in cap space. the DL/LBs/CBs will play great cuz they will want to get paid. $=motivation=great play. Yall chill out. Its legal in Cali, smoke some green and relax. RAIDERS!!!!!!
