Raiders draft cornerback D.J. Hayden

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 25th, 2013 at 6:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders selected Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden Thursday night with their first choice in the NFL draft, No. 12 overall.

Hayden nearly lost his life in a freak injury during practice last Nov. 6. Kneed in the chest, Hayden, sustained a tear of his inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body to the heart.

“I’m looking around and I’m getting real sleepy,’’ Hayden told reporters at the NFL scouting combine. “My left eye goes pitch black. I can’t see out of it . . . I’m praying, `Lord, help me get out of this one.’ ‘’

“The doctor said he was going to have to cut me open. I said, ‘Okay, just don’t mess my abs up.’ . . . they saw the vein was torn. They stitched it back together and here I am today.’’

Surgeons at the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Center saved Hayden’s life. The injury is said to have a 95 percent fatality rate.

Hayden didn’t work out at the scouting combine, but was able to work out for scouts, get cleared medically and clock a 4.33 time in the 40-yard dash.

Before the injury, Hayden was considered the top cornerback in the country. His performance in offseason workouts caused his stock to steadily grow, and CBSSports.com reported the Raiders were even considering Hayden at No. 3.

Hayden was the Conference USA Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2011. He had six interceptions in 23 games for Houston, returning two for touchdowns.

One of the weakest units on the Raiders last season, the Raiders now have Hayden and free agent acquisitions Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins at cornerback.

I guess there’s a silver lining in this: No Ansah and no Geno. I was about to cry like a grown man has never cried when all that Geno crap hit twitter right before the pick was announced.

    I cried on the insides

  • Twinkle

Prolly pick up all these top ten picks as FA’s before the first game given the success rate of high draft picks making it.

  • raidertbone

The Bills go with Manuel, with Nassib and Geno still on the board? Wow, I guess Geno wasn’t as “all world” as some people thought!!

Uh, No. GM does not supersede TEAM. Ive been a Raiders fan long before McKenzie was here, and will be one long after.

I wish Hayden well, and now that hes a Raider, I’ll pull for him, but I think we couldve done much better.

    —————————

Um Reggie is more of a RAIDER then anyone here. He has actually put blood, sweat and tears in for this team. He has more of a reason to see the Raiders succeed then anyone here. You are just a fan. This is his job. I dont care how much money you spend on the Raiders

reggie made an Al type pick. risky on a speedy CB who isnt known as a tackler.takes awhile for young cbs to make an impact.

Some press folks believe the kid to be the best corner in the draft. After game one last year we had to start our
safety at corner.Aso made a lot of tackles on RB’s…this kid can tackle…how can it be a bad pick when we have a weak secondary that has just had 2 unknown
qualities added to it?Cannot please some people.I’ll
agree with you if the kid don’t make the 53.

Huh….GB picked Danone jones…..he looks better than Hayden…..maybe Reggie wasn’t the good personnel man…..maybe he just sat there and ate pancakes

The problem with draftniks is that eventually what they ate and digested for months comes out like crap on draft day, and mostly will call it wrong. Plus the final call on the puck will always be made when the player gets on the field and either makes it or busts. The draft has been said many times is a crap shoot.

The majority here predicted everyone but DJ, predicted that the pick would be a lineman, and it wasn’t until Fioro got the leak that people here started talking about DJ, typical draftnik.

Now he’s become the player everybody Raider fan wanted, now I’m not saying he won’t be the next coming of Jack Tatum, but he pretty well could be the next coming of Fabian Washington.

  • RaiderM

The Beloved Silvernblk have been reduced to an expansion franchise… They are horrid at almost every position…… Now I ask two questions….1. How many teams have started the rebuiding process with a CB? 2. Why do the Raiders always have to pick off the grid?

I’ve been reading your comments for years and finally decided to start responding. Some of you do not have a clue about football. Stop all the complaining and let the draft play out. The Raiders will be alright. If you are so miserable, find another team!!!!! The best is yet to come Raider Nation.

In a division with Peyton Manning (or Philip cry me a River), its hard to see how drafting the top cb is a bad choice. Would I have gone that way? No, but Big Reg burps more football than most of us here know. Had he gone DT at 3, all would be happy, even though we now know that wasn’t necessary either. We get a top cb hopefully, and a Rd 2 we didn’t have before-two shots to get it right, with either one a success it’s a win. If our 1 and 2 are both a success, it’s a home run. Welcome to the Silver and Black D.J.!
