Raiders trading down?

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, April 25th, 2013 at 9:54 am in Oakland Raiders.

Several reports mention the Raiders as the team being targeted by other teams interested in moving up in the first round of the NFL draft’s first round today so that they can get their hands on Oakand’s No. 3 pick.
It’s important to note that none of the reports cites named sources and that Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie gave no indication Tuesday in a news conference whether he wants out of No. 3.
Of course, it makes sense for teams to call the Raiders because the Raiders are in dire need of adding a slew of players to a roster in the midst of a major overhaul, and not just one top-teir guy.
Teams mentioned as being interested in trading up to No. 3 include the Detroit Lions at No. 5, the Cleveland Browns (No. 6), the Arizona Cardinals (No. 7) and the Miami Dolphins (No. 12).
The thinking goes, the Browns and Lions are high on Brigham Young defensive end Ezekiel Ansah and the Cardinals and Dolphins want to make sure they get one of the three offensive tackles expected to go within the top 10 — Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson.
If the Raiders bite, they surely could recoup a second-round pick, which they are without as a result of the trade for quarterback Carson Palmer in 2011, and possibly more, especially if they get multiple teams vying for the third pick.
McKenzie said he has a pretty good idea on which player the Raiders are going to get at No. 3 if they opt against a trade down. He just might be able to get a comparable player at, say, No. 5, No. 6 or No. 7, as well as one or more additional picks in this year’s draft.
So, let the speculation begin, as the first round nears — it starts at 5 p.m. PDT — and McKenzie’s time for contemplation runs out.

I like trading down to 6-7 and still having a chance at Star or other solid defensive stud and picking up a high 2nd round pick.

Possibly even a 2nd trade down from the 6-7 slot if the price is right and not too big a drop (Dolphins @ 12?)

Need to stay in the 1st half of first round for some top talent and still obtain more picks.

Morning Nation! Draft day be here, im hoping we just trade back and take best offer to get the most picks.

We have soo many needs and the opportunity will present itself since this draft is just a giant crapshoot like any other, but especially at the top. With several team needing a LT I truely believe it all depends if JAX takes DL vs. OL.

Either way, trade back or not we need to come out with the following: DL/OL FS/TE

  • 1960AutumnWind

Good change up on the draft DAV. Oakafor was probably the most dominant defensive player I watched in the bowl games. I am not sure about Mingo and Oakafor though… Star + Oakafor wow I think we just fixed our defense! Get a FS in the third. I am enjoying this mock more than any other I have seen – Good Job and fairly realistic except for the Mulligan on 38.

He has to be higher on the board in Reggie’s eyes.

  • VanHeathen30

time for Reggie to show us something…
taking out the trash doesn’t count as progress.
Especially when he wasted a season on Carson/ McClain/ DHB…
Firing Mark D. would help more than firing Reggie.

  • DMAC

    In Reggie I trust!!!!

  • DJ Johnny

I don’t know if DA is a good coach or not yet. In fact I find it impressive that he’s been able to completely master the ‘How to sound and comport yourself like an experienced southern style HC in any situation’ handbook at such an early point in his career.

Of course I realize it has nothing to do with whether he’s a good HC or not, I just find it interesting.

    Here’s the report on Hayden…

Profootballtalk.com is “told” the Raiders are targeting Houston CB D.J. Hayden after a trade down, out of the No. 3 spot.
Hayden’s buzz has cooled a bit over the last 24 hours, but he’s still very much in the mix to be selected in the teens or right before. A source told PFT that “many teams” view Hayden’s game film and medical file as superior to Alabama CB Dee Milliner’s. PFT’s final mock draft had Hayden to the Browns at No. 6.

Here’s an interesting report on Dion Jordan and Dee Milliner…

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Oregon DE/OLB Dion Jordan (shoulder) and Alabama CB Dee Milliner (shoulder) are both expected to open training camp on the PUP list.
Both players underwent surgeries for torn labrums this offseason. Jordan’s stock isn’t expected to be affected, but Milliner has undergone five surgeries in his football career. Neither player will make it out of the first round.

Not ripping on Reggie when I say this, but while everyone is feeling sorry for Reggie and his depleted roster it was he who depleted it. No one was holding gun to his head.

Maybe it was the right thing to do..but remember he wasn’t handed the aforementioned depleted roster.
