CB Hayden says he ‘saved best for last’ when comes to Raiders

By Steve Corkran
Friday, April 26th, 2013 at 2:51 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Late last year, cornerback D.J. Hayden was losing weight and feeling down as he recovered from a rupture of a vein that feeds to his heart, the result of a freak accident in practice at the University of Houston.
Today, he addressed the Bay Area media as the newest member of the Raiders, their No. 12 pick in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night.
“I didn’t even think that I’d be where I’m at right now,” Hayden said in Alameda at a news conference.
Hayden spoke with ease, confidence and humility, saying all the right things and adjusting to a life that has taken two drastic turns within the past six months.
Growing up, Hayden idolized cornerbacks Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson and Darrelle Revis. He also displayed a firm grasp of the rich tradition of cornerbacks with the Raiders.
He called the Raiders “a DB factory” after rattling off the likes of Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes.
Hayden said he has been medically cleared to play football again, though he hasn’t been informed by the Raiders whether he will be permitted to participate in the team’s first mini camp.
On the bright side, Hayden has recovered from his injury, and his mind now is free to focus on football.
“The chances of it happening again are slim and none,” said Hayden, shortly after posing with general manager Reggie McKenzie while holding up a No. 25 jersey with his name on the back. “I’m not really worried about it.”
It’s a far cry from a few months ago, when Hayden said he became accustomed to regular IVs and needle pokes and wasn’t sure he would ever walk again, let alone play football.
The Raiders checked out Hayden thoroughly and liked him enough that they selected him at No. 12. McKenzie said the Raiders were prepared to select Hayden at No. 3 if they hadn’t have traded down with the Miami Dolphins.
“They still got the person they wanted and they got the extra pick,” Hayden said.
Of all the pre-draft visits Hayden had, the Raiders were the last, he said.
“I guess I saved the best for last,” Hayden said.

Raider Len, all kidding aside, i said it before, he went through the motions last year purposely to see what he had, and said ok let’s try what we have, and give it a go, game one showed clearly we sucked. Sure Reggie wanted to scrap team from outset, sure he hated the roster but dealt with it. Now all cards are on the table he cleans house and starts new. Love it, remember Reggie was a true raider, and damn the losers here who are too stupid to realize it, he is burning for us to get back from hell

Reggie keep it up i love what you are doing!

I would welcoming the idea of trading Pryor, We’ll need a 4th/5th round pick to replace the 5th we lost with Aaron Curry.

Hayden and Moore will start from day one.

As for Watson: you’ll see what we saw with Veldheer a few years ago. He and Barnes will alternate for 1/2 the season, then he’ll take over the job full-time.

I guess Reggie must be confident in Sims and Walker at DT
    *****************************

Can’t fix everything with 3 picks. Lot of debate about elite DTs with a lot of questions about Floyd and whether Star was really ok. It looks like the scouts had the same quesitons. Even the Jets picked Richardson over those two with the very next pick. RM said BPA and I guess he meant it. Based on need alone he should of reached a little for Tackles.

Watson was probably at top of board at time and any remaining DT was lower.

After coaching him at Senior Bowl I bed Moore was BPA on their board.

Good lord. I know the Palmer trade was horrendous, but he was at least productive. In terms of production the Curry trade might have been worse.

Reading the scouting report it says that Watson is really fast learner (highly intellegent) so he might be ready by end of preseason. I hope he can get some outside coaching before training camp. It would be great to have a young developing average to better average right tackle.

“On Nov. 6, Hayden was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency heart surgery to save his life. The injury he suffered has a 95 percent fatality rate, but he survived. Less than six months later, Hayden was drafted higher than anybody could have imagined, even before his injury.”

It’s just 6 months after life saving heart surgery.

    Oakland Raiders (Last Year: 4-12)

    2013 NFL Draft Individual Grades:

    12. D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston: C Grade
I was prepared to give the Raiders a “Millen” grade had they drafted D.J. Hayden at No. 3, as some reports indicated they would. This isn’t so bad. Hayden is a big injury risk, so I don’t know how he can possibly go so early. I do like that Oakland picked up a second-round though, which was essential given the lack of talent on the roster. I just don’t know how the Raiders can justify passing on Sharrif Floyd and

    42. Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State: B+ Grade
The Raiders were going to draft Luke Joeckel if he fell to No. 3, so this makes a ton of sense. The Raiders have a huge hole at right tackle, and they need to worry about blocking Von Miller on that side. Menelik Watson could play there initially and eventually move to the blind side. He’s a project, but was expected to go at the end of the first round because of his great athleticism.

    66. Sio Moore, LB, Connecticut: A- Grade
It’s useless to stay whether or not an Oakland pick filled a need because the team has huge holes everywhere. Sio Moore was one of the top players available. He’ll offer some pass-rushing ability out of the linebacker position, much like former Raider Kamerion Wimbley.

  • The_Judge37

What bad trades are you referring to? Oakland got the guy we targeted and got an early second out of it.
    ——–

One pick to drop out of the top 10 is a terrible return. Almost as bad as trading a starting QB for a 6th rounder, which is almost as bad as giving up two picks for a former 7th round back up QB when his former team was desperate to get rid of him.

  • r8eray

I’m actually glad we don’t have a 4th rounder to fuk up!!
