CB Hayden says he ‘saved best for last’ when comes to Raiders

Late last year, cornerback D.J. Hayden was losing weight and feeling down as he recovered from a rupture of a vein that feeds to his heart, the result of a freak accident in practice at the University of Houston.
Today, he addressed the Bay Area media as the newest member of the Raiders, their No. 12 pick in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night.
“I didn’t even think that I’d be where I’m at right now,” Hayden said in Alameda at a news conference.
Hayden spoke with ease, confidence and humility, saying all the right things and adjusting to a life that has taken two drastic turns within the past six months.
Growing up, Hayden idolized cornerbacks Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson and Darrelle Revis. He also displayed a firm grasp of the rich tradition of cornerbacks with the Raiders.
He called the Raiders “a DB factory” after rattling off the likes of Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes.
Hayden said he has been medically cleared to play football again, though he hasn’t been informed by the Raiders whether he will be permitted to participate in the team’s first mini camp.
On the bright side, Hayden has recovered from his injury, and his mind now is free to focus on football.
“The chances of it happening again are slim and none,” said Hayden, shortly after posing with general manager Reggie McKenzie while holding up a No. 25 jersey with his name on the back. “I’m not really worried about it.”
It’s a far cry from a few months ago, when Hayden said he became accustomed to regular IVs and needle pokes and wasn’t sure he would ever walk again, let alone play football.
The Raiders checked out Hayden thoroughly and liked him enough that they selected him at No. 12. McKenzie said the Raiders were prepared to select Hayden at No. 3 if they hadn’t have traded down with the Miami Dolphins.
“They still got the person they wanted and they got the extra pick,” Hayden said.
Of all the pre-draft visits Hayden had, the Raiders were the last, he said.
“I guess I saved the best for last,” Hayden said.

What bad trades are you referring to? Oakland got the guy we targeted and got an early second out of it.
    ——–

One pick to drop out of the top 10 is a terrible return. Almost as bad as trading a starting QB for a 6th rounder, which is almost as bad as giving up two picks for a former 7th round back up QB when his former team was desperate to get rid of him.
    ————————
Two future late round picks, one of which is conditional. You always seem to forget that part.

and a special teams stud who can get downfield and tackle

    Sio Moore, OLB, Connecticut
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 245. Arm: 33.58.
    40 Time: 4.65.
    Projected Round (2013): 2-3.
4/24/13: Moore helped his draft stock by performing well at the East-West Shrine and the Senior Bowl. He showed nice speed, instincts and a physical nature. The senior totaled 72 tackles with 15.5 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and 11 passes broken up this year.

2012 was Moore’s third straight quality season for Connecticut. He finished 2011 with 86 tackles with 16 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, six passes broken up and two forced fumbles. He had 110 tackles with an interception, 11.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass broken up and two forced fumbles as a sophomore.

Moore demonstrated a serious combination of strength and speed at the Combine. He is a good sleeper linebacker who could develop in the NFL.

Man, just getting up to speed on the picks.

Wow, Reggie hit a couple of homeruns today. Watching video of Melenik and Sio, Melenik looks like a beast in that RT… I hope he can unseat Barnes, and I see Mr Sparano maybe having a say in this pick.

Sio, now heres a guy that looks dominating. I wanted Teo, but he got to Sd, damn, we may have to face that guy over 10 years…

anyway, Reggie knows what he is doing, slowly but steady, this is becoming a new raider team that is goin to give you a hard time….

    LATEST NEWS
04/24/2013 – 2013 NFL DRAFT RANG’S GANG: OLB: Sio Moore, Connecticut, 6-1, 245, 4.62…Teams love all-purpose outside linebackers and they don’t come much more versatile than Moore, who proved to be a playmaker for the Huskies whether slicing through gaps to collect an eye-popping 43 tackles for loss over his career, rushing the quarterback (16 sacks) or dropping into coverage (four interceptions). Some thought Moore was simply feasting off an aggressive UCONN scheme until he starred at the East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl, as well. – Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
    More Sio Moore News
    OVERVIEW
While the NFL generally prefers bigger, bulkier linebackers with the game shifting to more of a passing attack, speed and instincts in coverage are proving valuable commodities on draft day, which is why Moore is earning significant attention from scouts.
Moore registered 274 career tackles for the Huskies as a three-year starter while proving his ability to make an impact at the line of scrimmage, behind it and as a pass defender.

More than a few NFL teams are likely to give him a top 100 grade.

    ANALYSIS
STRENGHTS: Reads the action quickly and has the speed to close, making him a classic 4-3 weak-side linebacker candidate. He was a versatile performer in college with good production as a hybrid linebacker for the Huskies, not looking out of place when asked to play in space against either the run or pass. Even in non-contact drills at the Shrine Game, Moore’s competitive drive and explosive hitting ability were evident.
WEAKNESSES: At his size, Moore will need to continue to improve his strength in taking on and shedding blocks.

Great leader and showed a lot of confidence going back to USC because of “unfinished business” even though he was a lock to be drafted in the top ten last year.
