History suggests Raiders can get standout player at No. 42

By Steve Corkran
Friday, April 26th, 2013 at 1:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.

If recent history means anything, the Raiders stand a pretty good chance of finding a productive player at No. 42, with the second round pick they acquired from the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. Here’s a look at the players selected at No. 42 in the past 10 NFL drafts:

2003 – FS Ken Hamlin, Seattle Seahawks
2004 – DE Travis LaBoy, Tennessee Titans
2005 – LB Kevin Burnett, Dallas Cowboys
2006 – FS Danieal Manning, Chicago Bears
2007 — OT Tony Ugoh, Indianapolis Colts
2008 – WR Eddie Royal, Denver Broncos
2009 – S Jairus Byrd, Buffalo Bills
2010 — TE Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots
2011 – LB Brooks Reed, Houston Texans
2012 – OT Jonathan Martin, Miami Dolphins

A former Cal Poly football coach on trial for assault says that he defended himself against a rabid Oakland raiders fan during an August 2012 fight outside a Pismo Beach bar. [Tribune]

Randy Hanson, a Cal Poly defensive backs coach at the time, said that in the early morning of August 4, 2012, James Kelsey became belligerent outside Harry’s Night Club & Beach Bar in Pismo Beach and instigated a fight with him over an incident that occurred while Hanson was an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders.

Hanson says that during the altercation in Pismo Beach Kelsey, a rabid Raiders fan, told him he wasn’t a Raider and called him a “pu$$y.” Kelsey later reached into a limousine that Hanson was inside and grabbed his shirt, tearing it, Hanson says.

Hayden went from surgery bed from an injury that 95% of people die from, where they split open his entire chest, and he lost 30 pounds, to running a 4.33 forty at his pro day. Without the big setback, he is probably a 4.2 guy. And on his film you can see it is a smooth, effortless run, with also great quickness and change of direction. The health concern was everyone’s biggest concern, but it sounds like doctors are on board.

In two years at Houston he had 127 tackles including 9.5 for a loss, 1 sack, 6 interceptions returned 229 yards and 2 TDs, 25 passes defended and 6 forced fumbles.

Kid is an athlete with speed, break, hips, ball skills, a nose for the ball and an attitude of being blessed just to be on the field. His weakness is supporting the run right at him, but you can live with that from an NFL lock down corner.

Strong pick. All you whiners should go hang on Niners sites.

This second round pick better be a good one…..

The Miami Dolphins bragged about how little they gave up moving up from No. 12 to No. 3 in a trade with the Raiders. The Raiders also got pick No. 42 in the trade.

And it was surprisingly easy to get up that high. The Dolphins only needed to surrender their 12th and 42nd overall picks; comparable trades in the past have taken two first-rounders to consummate.

Ireland said he first approached Oakland about moving up before the draft began. After the Raiders had been on the clock for a few minutes, he called and made his first offer. Too low, the Raiders said. A minute later, the Raiders called back and asked for the Dolphins’ first-rounder and first second-rounder.

Ireland agreed, and they had a deal – much to the surprise of many in the Dolphins’ war room.

“I feel like everybody in the room was shocked,” Ross said.

Elated might be a better way to put it.

Reggie did say that he would never draft for need, especially in the first round. He would only take the best player available. Last night I was drunk and pissed off. I don’t see how a team in our situation could take a corner in the first round. Reggie says that he believed Hayden to be the best player available, and a “no doubt” impact player. I guess until further notice, we should give him the benefit of the doubt. However, to my knowledge, there is only one corner in this league who is truely an impact player, and that’s Revis. If we are saying that this guy will impact games in the same way Revis does, then far be it for me to criticize! But is that really what we’re saying? Suffice it to say, my opinion on who the best player available was at the time of our choice was vastly different than that of RM’s.

However, one player I would love to see be a Raiders is LB Kiko Alonso from Oregon. Versatile and tough LB with a mean streak who platys balls out.

His style reminds me of Raider great Phil Villapiano!

    ==============

Alonzo is awesome…..He’s got GREAT instincts, chooses the right gap, had like 3 or 4 interceptions last year, had the key INT in the Rose Bowl year before, and one of his best attributes is when he’s blitzing…..

He has a Mean streak, and I think he’s fairly underrated.

    ^^^^^^^^^^
Yeah. Kiko Alonzo is a solid FOOTBALL PLAYER. The type of player the Raiders need on a rebuilding D.

Him and Burris on the same LB corp? NICE!

He can play all LB positions and tough with instincts.

    A Phil Vilapiano clone!

He can contribute on special teams also.

lol, Dolphins are tryin to convince everybody they got a steal trading up for Jordan, but most that know football know they fked up giving up a high 2nd rd and picking Jordan at 3 overall. He wasn’t even best on his own team let alone conference in any category and was most overrated player in this draft.

The Raiders will have the last laugh on this trade guaranteed, if we pick Moore or Tank with the 2nd rd pick either on of them will have a better first year with more sacks and career as a pass rusher than Jordan will plus Hayden will be a probowl CB
