Raiders get offensive with seventh-round pick

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, April 27th, 2013 at 2:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders selected San Diego State wide receiver Brice Butler with the first of their two seventh-round picks Saturday.
Butler caught 24 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns his senior season. He opened some eyes with an impressive showing at his pro day.
He ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash and displayed a 39-inch vertical leap. He stands 6-3 and weighs 205 pounds.
Butler’s father Bobby played defensive backs for the Atlanta Falcons during a 12-year NFL career.
Brice Butler transferred from Southern Cal to San Diego State after three seasons.
Would not be surprised to see the Raiders convert Butler to cornerback.

Butler is thanking Jesus? Good kid. I like him already.

    Super sleeper! Lol

  • itzSteve

so what is the over/under on how many UDFA players Reggie gets signed?

  • CDERaider

McGee looks the part, big and wide – solid run stuffer played in over 30 games before riding dirty in 2012.. Not done growing (or growing up apparently), he might be able to hang on as rotation for Sims at 3tech this season and bulk up to play NT in the future. Don’t see him playing DE in either scheme.

Noticing most of these draft picks are referencing god and such. Worries me.

  • aig-raiders

Watching Murray’s youtube and I see cool stuff. Kid runs inside and follows his blockers. Doesnt always look to bounce outside and can make the cuts at full speed. Doesnt go down at first arm tackle. Saw him squat 485lbs. BTW, squatting for a RB is much more important than benching 225s.

How did this guy fall to the 6th round? A steal!!!!!

If Moore has his head screwed on straight, nothing wrong with him and Streater starting with Criner in the slot.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

DHB has 7 catches his rookie year.. PRODUCTION

  • rediaR

    damn
Pack got a guy with some potential.

  • CDERaider

Butler is a very curious pick – you’d think Reggie would be taking fliers on lineman or at least guys who can potentially contribute on special teams…

Unless Reggie thinks this guy can turn into another Streater.. if this guy makes the practice squad it will be a surprise.

  • dr_robert

Bray or dysert would be a nice final pick or UDFA.

Meltdown? Don’t even know what that is and u don’t either.

A phag is a phag and ur that.

  • ron69

Let all the love to Brice flow and be the new cult hero around here and many boards around the net.
LOL, he might not even make the team

    Dude… 7th round.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I realize that. But we can’t afford to wast picks. I’m not thrilled about anything since the 4th round. Two tight ends I don’t think we need. Another criminal. And now a guy that has average hands, no quickness and can’t get off the LOS? I think we could do better than that even in the 7th. We didn’t even draft Streater. I love the running back. As far as I can see tho the rest of the 6th and 7th rounds r a dumpster fire.

  • Raidernationdave

Gotta love the way this draft was handled and conducted! Reggie’s the man! Fck the haters. RM trated this draft the his beyotch!

  • itzSteve

man…Kiper just said McGee shows 3rd-4th round talent and also undrafted talent at times. If he gets his head and consistency straighten out, could be a player. Highlights looked promising!

Yea. I did. Tight ends r a dime a dozen unless you have a beast like NO or NE. we easily could have picked up a few in FA or as UDFA. Wasted picks. I know we can’t fill evey hole. But TE is the least of my worries. Any big bastard that can block and catch a little can be a tight end.

  • PilagingJustForFun

    Boo boo

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Tight end are a dime a dozen.. Um ok.. they are 6th round draft picks. Its where you get them

  • itzSteve

all picks in the 6th and 7th rounds are just fewer calls Reggie has to make during the UDFA signings…

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

One thing is why didnt REGGIE draft Jordan Poyer.. he was with him at senior bowl 7 INTS last year

n whats wrong with Jesse Williams knee?

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It’s where we have always gotten them. How about thinking out of the box a little since we r basically an expansion team? So now we have 4 TE that were drafted in the 6th or 7th? Awesome. Easiest position to fill in football. And we can’t waste picks. I could see one (not Kasa). And then this butler guy? I don’t think out of the 3 more than one will make the team. Those r wasted picks. If they allays the team I’ll be the first to say I was wrong. But I seriously doubt that’s gonna happen.

Pretty much. Rod Streter was almost a 5th round selection last year

  • alzadoX

this may date me but I remember Bobby Butler… he was like 168 lbs at about 5-10 speedy CB I think out of Florida State ages ago. First rounder, despite his size if I remember correctly

his kid’s a lot bigger and maybe faster in 40. Now we’ll see how he plays and where Raiders play him

    Steve Corkran ‏@CorkOnTheNFL 19m

Brice Butler’s father, Bobby, played 12 seasons for the Atlanta Falcons as a defensive back.

Not DTs that can rush the passer and disrupt a backfield. Don’t think we will find that in the 6th or 7th either. Not my point. Rather take a flyer on a DB or RB or DT than a TE.

    Vic Tafur ‏@VicTafur 51s

Why not draft Bray next? Project but would have best arm of four quarterbacks in Raiders camp.

those were gone by round 4.. Raiders took a flier on Murray, McGee, Got plenty of CBs right now. Had No TE’s.. again what was the issue?

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Via Walter football since the 3rd round

    66. Sio Moore, LB, Connecticut: A- Grade
It’s useless to stay whether or not an Oakland pick filled a need because the team has huge holes everywhere. Sio Moore was one of the top players available. He’ll offer some pass-rushing ability out of the linebacker position, much like former Raider Kamerion Wimbley.

    112. Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas: B Grade
Tyler Wilson has a noodle arm, so he had to go to a team running a West Coast offense. That’s exactly what the Raiders utilize, so it’s a good fit. I’m not sure if Wilson can ever develop into a starter, but he should be a solid, game-managing backup at the very worst.

    172. Nick Kasa, TE, Colorado: B+ Grade
The Raiders really wanted a tight end earlier, but they’re definitely fine with Nick Kasa here, who fits the range. Oakland lost Brandon Myers to the Giants, so Kasa could start this year.

    181. Latavius Murray, RB, Central Florida: B Grade
Darren McFadden will get injured at some point during the 2013 season, so the Raiders need a solid running back to step in. Murray, perceived to be a sixth-round prospect by many, is a larger back who should be able to pass the mediocre Rashad Jennings on the depth chart at some point.

    184. Mychal Rivera, TE, Tennessee: B Grade
Two tight ends in the same round? Seems crazy, but I don’t mind this because Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera are two different players. Kasa will serve as the inline blocker, while Rivera will be the move tight end. The Raiders had nothing at the position, so they absolutely had to take care of this, especially when considering Matt Flynn’s noodle arm. Rivera fits the range.

    205. Stacy McGee, DT, Oklahoma: B Grade
The Raiders finally draft a defensive tackle 202 selections after most people thought they’d take one. Stacy McGee is a solid player for this pick.

    209. Brice Butler, WR, San Diego State: B Grade
Al Davis would have liked Brice Butler. He was a workout warrior who drew heavy interest as a late-round prospect. Darrius Heyward-Bey is gone, so might as well replace him with Butler.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Tyler wislon doesnt have a weak arm though

  • RockyMtnRaider

Sincerely doubt Jesus had anything to do with the Raiders picking him.
