Raiders select QB Wilson

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, April 27th, 2013 at 10:01 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders used their fourth-round pick on Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson, soon after the Eagles selected USC QB Matt Barkley and the Giants took Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib.
Wilson is a highly accurate, strong-armed quarterback that stands tall in the face of challenges. Go watch his first meaningful playing time, when he came in in relief against Auburn as a sophomore and almost guided the Razorbacks to a come-from-behind victory.
He replaced Ryan Mallett midway through the second quarter and completed 25 of 35 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns.
Wilson has great poise, leadership and potential. He gives the Raiders the third quarterback they were looking for, joining presumptive starter Matt Flynn and third-year player Terrelle Pryor.
Given the Raiders selected Wilson in the fourth round, it begs the question, did McKenzie want either Barkley or Nassib ahead of Wilson.
McKenzie will face that question at the end of the day. It’s likely that he and coach Dennis Allen will say Wilson is the guy the Raiders wanted all along.
No matter, he’s their newest quarterback.

Gotta figure, some of those top 50 players are just busts.. it might feel good to get a “great value”, but dude is slipping for a reason.

And all you people that are so down on the d-line… Did you consider that the organization might have a better idea about the progression of bilikudi and Crawford, not to mention the often ignored addition of Walker (mentioned much less frequently than Sims in here, for some reason)… and then theres Houston.. And then theres scheme (3-4?)

    Good Point.

Big Reggie,B.Rambo had off field issues but like Gruden says you gotta get some playmakers who have an edge, give them a second chance.

    Hey Pirate

If Reggie wants to be 2-14 why did he rebuild the defense so hard. I think he found like 7 starters in FA for the defense. If truely tanking why do these 1 year prove it contracts with these guys?

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Reggie better pick someone that can help the Raiders beat the Jags in the home opener because if the Raiders lose that game Reggie will have to tarp the entire stadium.

Raider haters on the board, quit reading their crap.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

He got rid of Palmer when the QB position was not the problem.
Reggie wanted his stamp on the team and this is what happens … seriously other then getting an extra pick it looks like Al was doing the drafting.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Lol.

For the first two picks it was like Al left detailed instructions in his will on who to pick in the draft.

We know everyone hates USC QB`s here so why we complaining.

    —————

Because QB was far from a position of need.

Because Nassib is better and Gruden loved Nassib and so their is that chance we could lure Gruden back on day if Nassib pans out.

Because the Raiders have NEVER developed a QB in their history. Granted, this is a new era without Al. But so far, the current reggime has completely dropped the ball on the TP6 project so what makes us think we are going to give Wilson any better a shot?

Good Safety’s were on the board. We need secondary help. We did NOT need a guy that will not see the field this year. 3rd string QB’s are the biggest waste of a roster spot there is.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

a few thoughts on the draft.

I love the first 3 picks. Hayden is a top 5 talent and i trust the fact that he is in no danger. Hayden may be the best cover corner we have had since had since the hayes and haynes days. Faster and a better work ethic than charles woodson. A better ball hawk play maker and leader than namdi. Of course rod woodson and albert lewis were well past thier primes. Eric allen didnt have that 4.3 speed.

Watson was a very good player, and even if it takes a year, he and veldeheer can form an awesome powerful bookend tandem for years. i saw watson manhandle the acc last year on several occasions.

moore is a very intense tackling machine, he doesnt wow you with any one thing but has an over all game that is more than just solid. Clearly the leader on his defense last year. Could rush from the lb spot a few times as well.

wilson….. nothing more than a 3rd string qb with no future as a starter here. Rounds out the qb roster and provides depth, will never be a better player than pryor, and is looking up at flynn as well. Career back up that may become a decent number 2 one day. he is mentally fragile, and mistake prone.

Personally I would have passed on wilson, but the other picks more than make up for that

    No, no, no Hunter.

Mark Davis is the tarp master, not McKenzie!

Wilson kind of looks like Flynn 2.0 to me. We’ll see, but I would’ve rather had the kid from Arizona, who’s still there, or Landry Jones. We’ll see. Coaches and Analysts are high on Wilson and I haven’t watched a ton on him, but I’m kind of like, meh.

Huge pryor fan, but face it him and flynn are unknown
and im a bigger raider fan. So this gives us one more lottery ticket in the starting qb lottery.

My 12 year old can dominate a draft with that many picks. Come on. What’s smart is to have a bus sitting at the 9rs facility on cut day. They can’t keep em all.

    ———————

he did that last year, Bartell, Spencer, Joselio Hansen, Willie Smith, Philip Adams, Coye Francis, etc. All total crap, plus the complete failure of last year’s draft.

only decent player was Wheeler, and thanks to that “1-year prove it” contract he was able to ditch Oakland as soon as he could.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. if Reggie really believed Wheeler was a keeper, he wouldn’t have signed him to a 1-yr contract.

Reggie shipped Palmer out because Palmer wanted to leave. No sense in having a guy who doesn’t want to be here. And we both know that at least 2,000 of Palmer’s passing yards were garbage-time throws against prevent defenses.

    ______________________________________________________
Is the glass half empty or half full?
No running game … the opposing teams knew Palmer was throwing on every down. To me that sounds its harder to pass when a defence knows you are throwing.

Reggie wanted Palmer out … Palmer did not want to leave.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

are you keeping score at home?
looks like the nfl agreed with my take on ej manual and geno.

the only 2 qbs worth drafting high and clearly the best in their class.

Manual has the most potential and the bills laoded up on offense. I am happy for the young man he will have every opportunity to succeed and may be the best qb the bills have had since k gun kelly retired

well not a bad draft.. we got 3 starters an some depth. nobodys gonna say we “won” the draft.. but ive seen us do worse.

  • http://www.Raiders.com KoolKell

A Reggie draft, eh? Seems pretty solid. Let me think on it.

  • dr_robert

A case can be made that we got the best quarterback in the draft.

Barkley and Wilson were the rising stars from last year but struggled in their senior years for various reasons.

  • jackasspuria

    Raiders next picks at 172 overall, 176, 181, 205 and 209.

4 sixth-round picks and a seventh left. (Unless trade up).

  • http://goducks.com Sir RaiderDuck, OMS

Now all we need is Debo showing up and claiming that no QB in the draft is even half as good as JaPaycheck and we should all “get on board the comeback train” or whatever the heck he says.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_kr9FuGZVs

I really like this video on Tyler Wilson because the guy is extremely mature. For being such a young guy, he comes off more like a Head Coach. I would think that’s a pretty good trait overall.

  • BabySlash

The earlier comment about Mark Davis running the draft is almost plausible ….all projects or a guy who almost bit the big one…. Moore sounds good but so did FRANZ JOSEPH !

  • raiderkoolaid

Are we sure Al Davis is gone? The first pick is a great potential guy who was downgraded because of an injury. The second is a guy who has all the tangibles for an O Tackle, size, reach, great feet, etc., but is still a project because of very little football playing experience. Those sound like Al Davis picks to me. I hope they turn out to be great players.

He didnt do very well last season and completely caved. I dont think he is very talneted and will be a career back up.

he put up stats but could lead wins, and there were whispers about his mental toughness.
