Rookie QB shines at mini camp

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, May 11th, 2013 at 3:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA – As far as rookies go, quarterback Tyler Wilson looked nothing of the sort Saturday as he displayed the poise and skills of a seasoned veteran in only his second practice as a member of the Raiders.
Wilson showed off a strong arm, placing balls right on target time and again, be it swing passes, throws over the middle or well downfield.
“Obviously, picking up a new system, there’s a little bit of rust there,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said of Wilson. “But throwing the ball, he’s done a nice job. I don’t have any question about his arm strength and his accuracy.”
If anything, it’s the receivers that are going to have to adjust to the velocity on Wilson’s throws. Several times, laser-like throws went through or off a receiver’s hands.
Wilson arrived as a fourth-round draft pick out of Arkansas, with a reputation for being a bright guy, confident in his abilities and ready to take on any challenge.
It’s not a stretch to envision Wilson playing well enough to surge past presumptive starter Matt Flynn and third-year player Terrelle Pryor at some point, even if he downplays the situation.
“It’s an opportunity,” Wilson said after practice. “Obviously, there’s a lot I have to learn. … I’ve got a lot of work to do to get up to speed because there have been veteran guys that have been here that are way ahead of me right now. So, I’m playing catch-up from that point.”
The Raiders traded for Flynn earlier this offseason on the same day that they traded starter Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals. Flynn has started only two games during his five-year NFL career. Pryor started the regular-season finale in 2012 for his only start.
Through it all, Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie refuse to anoint Flynn the starter, going only so far as to say that Flynn will begin with the first-team offense.
Allen and McKenzie want competition at all positions. To that end, Wilson is game.
“I do think I can bring some things to the table skill-set wise,” Wilson said. “But, again, I’ve got to play catch-up at this point. I’m going to use it as an opportunity and compete like heck.”

    Also, pretty string words from Amy trask. She no longer wishes to be with the org.

    ———————-

    I think it was Mark Davis that gave her the hint.. like we are moving in a new direction. Just draft day she was on 95.7 the game announcing a new partnership with them and looking foward to working with them for many years to come.

    Mark might have told her recently they are going in a different direction

    ===========================================

    At least a new team president, and possibly a new location.

    Hopefully the playoffs location.

    Tyler wilson named starter and Gruden back as PREZ and HC next year all in one day? WOW lol j/k

  • The_Civilian_James_Trapp

    Amy must see Mark as the spoiled rich kid that he is, and only stayed on as a favor due her loyalty for Al….More brains leave the organization and we’re stuck with Mark/Shreg/Denise.

    I don’t know Mark Davis or Amy Trask or anything about how a front office operates in the NFL.
    I watch the Raiders and I want them to be good.
    On the football side, I take McKenzie and Allen at their word, they want to win championships. I am willing to give them more than a year before listen to the haters.

    ===========

    Maybe they are anticipating Ray Anderson, Holmgren or Gruden returning in that capacity. From the marketing point of view, the Gruden thing makes a little sense, but too concerned on his lack of experience in that side of the ball, and we’ve seen Holmgren’s act in Cleveland (drafting Colt McCoy – EGAD?!)

    =============================================

    Holmgren would be good, but only as a consultant/someone for Reggie and DA to bounce ideas off of.

    Gruden has zero experience doing anything other than coaching, and he wasn’t even good at that for the last half-decade of his career.

    Anderson would be fine.

    not a bust at all. Just a good player who is injured a lot. He blasted for 160 yds v. Jacksonville, Denver is it his fault the defense was hot garbage? He isnt a bust, i’d say he’s Clinton Portis..a good player, who might’ve been great had he not been injured.

    He is by far the most talented player on our roster and a top 5 back when healthy. Foot problems have slowed him down and took him out on numerous occasions, but he’s no slouch. Ask Eric Weddle wut its like to try to tackle DMC

    =====================

    I’m thinking Wilson wins it outright in pre-season. Flynn is hurt or slowed down, Pryor is well, Pryor. When players have something to prove, and they havent yet, they do too much….rookies pretty much play, because there is no expectation.. lot depends on receivers.

    I remember Jeff Garcia in camp..then he just out and left saying “they dont know what they are doing, etc.”

    Longtime Raiders exec Amy Trask has resigned. No surprise. Mark Davis had informed her she’d have a subordinate role under his ownership.

    Yeah, but why was she on 95.7 talking about how she looked forward to working with them for ‘years to come’? Sounds like someone that planned to be around for a long time.

    I know people have to fake enthusiasm sometimes but this seems like something sudden, or if it was in the works something happened to accelerate the process.

  • oldschoolraider

    Poor Flynn, everytime he turns around there’s a guy named Wilson breathing down his neck.
    Our QB lineup will be…
    #1 Flynn
    #2 Wilson
    #3 Padrone

    Pryor won’t make it out of camp. Anything that smells even faintly of the old regime will be gone, MacFaddon being the only exception.

    So far you have to say DMC is a bust. 1rnd pick, how many games has he played? No questioning his talent. Just can’t stay healthy.

    I dont think so, either. Pryor will have to pull a Russell Wilson/throw for a TD on the first play from scrimmage, etc.

    more a tease, then a bust. a bust would be if he never played, never rushed for 100 yards, etc. – he was instrumental in a number of wins, including the 59-14 annihilation of Denver

    Really? And what did all the “brains” get us over the past ten years? Amy was little more than a loyalist, afraid to the speak the truth to Al, otherwise she would have agitated for change. Then she would have been worth keeping around.

    I love the speculative opinions of fans. What’s with the play on peoples names? Shreg, Denise, how old are some of you? The median IQ of this blog is low, I gather.

    all good news. Flynn will be pushed, if he slacks, here comes another Wilson….

    same story for Pryor, he better fix his throwing mechanics and read progressions or he will be #3 or a late camp cut.

    If a team Flynn drafts a quarterback named Wilson it’s his kiss of death.

    I liked Wilson before the Bobby Petrino fiasco. I thought he was a better all around QB than Ryan Mallett.

    However, a rookie mini camp is another thing altogether. so, let’s see how this scenario plays out before annointing him as the Raiders QB. However, @ this point. . .

  • http://ibabuss.com antispy3

    Wonder if Pryor ever hears how much cash he can make as a top flight WR or TE. . .just sayin. . .
