Kluwe says he’s signing with Raiders

Veteran punter Chris Kluwe told former teammate Brendon Ayanbadejo he will be signing with the Raiders, according to a Fox Sports.com report.

Ayanbadejo writes a column for Fox Sports.com and quoted Kluwe as saying, “I’m excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California,” Kluwe, who attended high school in Southern California before going to UCLA, told me on Wednesday. “Now, my family can actually come to games.”

Kluwe, 31, averaged 45.2 yards on 70 punts for the Minnesota Vikings last season. Veteran punter Shane Lechler signed with the Houston Texans this offseason, with Marquette King, who stayed on the roster last season following a weight room accident, and undrafted Idaho free agent Bobby Cowan also on the roster.

The socially active kicker, with a double-major in political science and history out of UCLA, is known for speaking his mind and is an advocate for same-sex marriage.

Last season December in a game against the Chicago Bears, Kluwe wore a jersey with a Hall of Fame patch covered with a post-it note which said, “Vote Ray Guy,” to protest the fact that there are punters in the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Kluwe would be the second piece added to the Raiders special teams in two days, with the Raiders reportedly coming to terms with Josh Cribbs Monday.

Neither move has been confirmed by the Raiders.

Lechler’s making 1.8m now. Kluwe 800k. All we needed to do was not sign scrubs like Barron, Hunter, or Barnes (all making $800k) and keep Shane.
    ——————————–
Shane wanted to go to Houston, He would have went a few years ago but Al made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. I couldn’t see him staying to play for a non contender when he can go “home” and have a chance to go deep in the playoffs.

The main point here is, who cares?

It’s not like we are a punter away from being a playoff team.
    —-

No, but we are a bad punt away from getting 40-50 points hung up on us.

    ———————–
A bad punt away from getting 40-50 hung up on us? LMAO

Judge, I usually truly enjoy your posts.

Your losing your mind a little bit here to defend your point.

There are plenty of reasons someone can “hang 40 or 50 points on us”. Punting is probably one of the last reasons my friend.

Poor, poor Shane Lechler. Millionaire many times over for essentially a part time job. Just got work in his home state. Probably had no control over his destiny whatsoever. Probably just tossed around like a rag doll by heartless Reggie.
    —–

Same thing as poor poor Reggie, who didn’t get hired to take over a Super Bowl winning team. No GM ever hired has to deal with bum talent and a bad cap, they usually take over for winning teams.

  • raiderjhawk

I don’t get why everyone here is making such a huge deal of this – besides there is nothing else to talk about I guess… Kluwe won’t be our Punter come the first game of the season, that job belongs to King, if it didn’t go to King then why would the Raiders put him on IR last season when he wasn’t really hurt to make sure we’d still have him for this year? Kluwe is a camp leg, and a little competition for King, that’s all, get over it.

why are you guys trying to change the topic of convo?

you guys really care more about my stance on gey marriage than the player we just “reportedly” signed? (It’s known how you feel about (geys), their rights, and people that support these rights)

Cribbs could be useful to our particular roster for reasons beyond his between the lines play. Remember, Cribbs was an undrafted free agent, and knows what it takes to be successful. He can be a good example for a guy like McGuffie.

How hard of a concept is to understand that Reggie made the decision that our punter was going to make league minimum this year. No more. We now have 3 guys on the roster to compete for this position that fit into that description. I can easily say that Shane wouldn’t have stayed for league minimum because he the contract he signed is for a million dollars MORE than league minimum. It doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to figure this sh1t out.

If a punter wearing a piece of tape over a patch on his jersey is too much of a distraction for you to be able to do your job, you probably shouldn’t be playing on an NFL team…

You probably shouldn’t be gainfully employed at all.

Oh… and Shane wasn’t exactly silent Sammy either. How easily you forget him publicly scorning the Cable firing.

GDog, you are obviously a distrought Raiders fan and who can blame after all the abuse we taken in the last 20 years.

But dude you are SO focused on the tiny picture the micro perspective you are arguing points that are banal.

Our entire ORGANIZATION was a disaster! ALL of it. Sadly Al wasn’t real good at transitional planning and when he passed (RIP) it was a complete dumpster fire.

You can argue whether we should have purged Seymour sooner rather than later, you can bemoan whether we should have kept Routt Whimbley Huffy McLoser, TKelly Palmer on the roster.

But facts are facts and you don’t seem or want to understand the BIG picture. We needed to burn the place down, collect the insurance money and start over.

Do I personally wish RegMcK had started earlier? – YES!
Do I blame him for taking the time to evaluate before he lit the torch? – NO!
