Woodson intrigued by prospect of re-signing with Raiders

By Steve Corkran
Monday, May 20th, 2013 at 1:19 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Veteran defensive back Charles Woodson is slated to meet with the Raiders on Tuesday, and Raiders coach Dennis Allen said he is hopeful of bringing back the player that once starred in a silver-and-black uniform.
“I want to do anything we can to help this team get better,” Allen said Monday. “So, we’ll see how that process goes.”
The Raiders reportedly already made an initial offer to Woodson, 36. The 49ers and Denver Broncos are the only two teams that Woodson has met with since he was released by the Green Bay Packers.
Woodson told the Maize and Blue News that he is open to finishing his career with the team that selected him with the fourth pick of the 1998 NFL draft.
“It would be a really big thing to go back to Oakland being that I played there really most of my career,” Woodson said.
Woodson spent his first eight seasons with the Raiders. He signed with the Green Bay Packers in 2006 and spent the past seven seasons there.
“I spent most of my career in Oakland and I still have a lot of friends there,” Woodson said. “I still know people in the organization. It would be a homecoming of sorts if it were to happen. So, we’ll see.”
The Raiders are in need of a replacement for released free safety Michael Huff. For now, Brandian Ross and Usama Young are the leading candidates to take over for Huff.
Signing Woodson would give the Raiders a proven player to pair up with veteran strong safety Tyvon Branch on the back end of their retooled defense.
Woodson earlier this offseason said he wanted to sign with a legitimate Super Bowl contender. He since has backed off that hard-line stance as a result of a dearth of offers.
Last week, Woodson left Denver without receiving a contract offer. As of now, he said he isn’t sure how things are going to play out.
“I don’t have any idea, really,” Woodson said. “I plan on playing. I have a visit set up this week with the Oakland Raiders, so I’ll go out there and sit down with the coaching staff, GM and all of that, and we’ll figure it out from there.”
Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn spent four seasons with Woodson at the Packers. He said he’s eager to see how things play out.
“Everybody knows he’s a great player, but he’s also a great man, a great teammate, great leader,” Flynn said. “The front office, Reggie (McKenzie, general manager) and them, are going to make the right decision (about) what they think is going to be best for us going forward.”

If McFadden returns to 2011 form and plays 16 games, do the Raiders make the playoffs?
    —————————————-
    Yes!!! With to big IF´s:
1.- Murray helps to keep McFadden fresh.
2.- Flynn or Wilson play good enough.

Waiting for the day when the nation rises, slowly it is happening. Damn, don’t you guys get it Reggie is burning to turn this thing around such lack of support on this blog.

    ____________

its just some of the questionable moves he has so far. causes for concern:
    1. signed Branch long term too much money
    2. signed Brisiel as a ZBS guy… to much money
    3. Seymour’s deal (altough he would have been getting paid regardless if he was on the team or not)
    4. let wheeler and desmond walk (although i agree they aren’t worth that kind money)
    5. apparently has no negotiating ability .. seeing as we only got the 2nd rounder from the fins in the draft (i agree that was the best deal on the board and we got out of Hayden at #3 because of it and snabbed Watson)

so i mean… jury is still out. he’s trimmed the fat. next year will be very very telling if you ask me. and obviously this years draft class… that’ll be the very first tell sign for his eye for talent.

    No Doubt.

Reggie finally has an opportunity to put all that he’s learned into practice.

His reputation is on the line.

He played. He’s a competitor. He want’s to WIN.

He’s taking lumps right now, but is working His plan.

I was just watching NFLN and they did an interview with Carson Palmer.

They asked him about his short stint in Oakland and he was very respectful not one bad word.

He talked about how difficult it was for the team to transition from the greatest GM in the history of the league to a new ownership. (gave Al major kudo’s)

Just said the team was going through changes never once blamed anyone or anything.

The bright side is our offense is basically intact and u guys got your wish in deposing of the sinister golden haired devil. We lost DHB. Boo hoo what will we ever do w/out those critical 3rd down doinks off his chest but going back to power scheme will help a ton imo. Off. line basically the same if not better with Watson in the mix.

The defense? 9 new starters out of 11 with some nice pieces and some addition by subtraction with McClain and Seymour gone.

Nice post lets also not forget how he screwed up the Palmer trade getting Flynn first then dumping Palmer for a mere 7th rounder.

  • xraided

    666,

he had no choice. it was the only way someone would take a portion of his contract away from this team. he ate much less because of the trade, didn’t he? it would have cost so much more to out right release him… i don’t remember the numbers.

yea flynn was questionable.. the only reason i can think of is that he couldn’t go with JaSoup again or roll with an eventual rookie QB and Pryor … Flynn may very well turn out alright. no one has seem a big sample of Matt, so it’s hard to say man… i liked what i saw in the DET and NE games… hopefully he brings some of that potent GB offense to this ball club. we have the talent around him(given healthy) … no excuses.

we will see soon i suppose.

i’m just talking about what others are saying. he’s too fresh to get a read on as GM quite yet. he will go through growing pains… it’s a tough job, especially for this f’ed up organization.

and yea he had to stick with them in year one. i understand that. evaluation time is step numero uno! then we go 4-12.. whether it be QB play, bad coaching, or a terrible D, doesn’t matter. FIRE SALE! that’s step 2… we’re in the process of step 3. we’ll see what happens.

  • DaRaiders022

At 36, C-Wood can still make plays and is a veteran leader on defense. It makes sense to give him a 2 year contract and have him bring his playmaker skills and experience to a developing secondary! C-Wood could definitely end his career in Oaktown and demonstrate that he is a leader in NFL secondary play!

  • xraided

Woodson was off to a good start in his 7 games played last year. first real time as a FS too was it not?! i can talk to some GB fans and find out what he was like last year… but i don’t remember him being a huge drop off

i don’t trust ross or young .. i’d rather have Gio in there… and that’s scary

Chuck would take Hayden under his wing NO DOUBT. that would be key for a young talented rookie. he can show him SO MUCH

  • DutchRaider77

    __________________________________________________

I know I beat this drum before…but Reggie saved a ton of cash/cap space from the #3 to the #12 pick, difference in the contract being 4 year-$20M and 4 year $10M.

Could that be the difference in cap space we need to sign Woodson?

yes there’s no way any GM would have came in year one and told everyone to walk.

Branch was good, don’t blame Reg. Branch will surprise this year.
Second guessing on Briesel and he could still turn out good.
Seymour was also pretty good so Reg thought. Could be a good leader and add STABILITY. Like Woodson.
