Woodson in the house, still meeting with Raiders

Beat writer Jerry McDonald has been in Alameda monitoring the situation as defensive back Charles Woodson meets with the Raiders and contemplates whether to re-sign with the team that selected him in the 1998 NFL draft. No word yet on how this is going to turn out, but McDonald is doing his best to keep you informed. Here’s a link to his latest story:

The Raiders are at a crossroads when it comes to their massive overhaul under general manager Reggie McKenzie and head coach Dennis Allen: stay the course with aging quarterback Carson Palmer or cut ties and go with a younger, cheaper player.
On Thursday, a Yahoo Sports story said the Raiders asked Palmer to take a pay cut from $13 million to $10 million in base salary for 2013 and that Palmer refused to do so.
The story also intimated that Palmer, 33, is forcing the Raiders hand by balking at a pay cut so that he can play for another team in 2013, one presumably with a better chance at winning the Super Bowl, after being released or traded.
Two people familiar with the situation said the Raiders did not ask Palmer to accept a $10 million salary for 2013 and that the speculation about Palmer’s future is being fueled from outside the organization.

hayden, porter, woodson, branch…….. that’s one solid starting secodary.

  • Chris in NY

I bet the fan support had A LOT to do with Woodson deciding to sign with the Raiders. I mean, how is the guy going to see that and then walk away and sign with our most hated divisional rival for what’s probably the same basic contract?

  • ESETERIK78

    looks like #21 for him.

This is a nice, little move – a veteran player signing for one year to shore up a weak spot.

But I don’t get the fanfare. Woodson was a great player for Michigan and a great player for Green Bay — but he wasn’t a great player for us. He didn’t train and was often hurt. He gave up a million slants for first downs and was constantly flagged on long passes.

The way I look at it, Woodson owes us one great year (after all the money Al paid him). But I don’t know if he has it in him. I sure hope so.

This is significant. First of all, we didn’t overpay. 700k signing bonus w an incentive laden contract isn’t bad for a marquee (yet old) FA. But even more important is this. THERE IS NO FACKING WAY HE WOULD HAVE COME BACK TO AN AL DAVIS RAIDERS TEAM! He knows he isn’t going to the Super Bowl this year. And he’s not going next year either if he’s still around. But he obviously sees something on this franchise. He can sense it’s going in the right direction. Or at least I think so, don’t wanna presume to know what’s going on in his head. I know the fans may have made a difference. And I know he has businesses and friends in the area. But he’s been gone for 8 years. He wouldn’t come back of he didn’t see things changing for the better. He’s added legitimacy to this team and it’s direction.

Now I just hope he has a year or two left in the tank. For tonight tho? IDGF! This is FACKING awesome!

CWood got to teach these youngins how to rip some sack and punch it up the rear. Yeah Baby!

    Reggie means bidness. Hale yeah!

    Say it again:
    Reggie means bidness. Hale yeah!

Now go snatch Namndi from those butt pirates.
Reggie and DA da mans! Booooyah!

Mo Money. Somebody just got some Wood. The wood is in the house.

In other news, DA is creaming. Reggie is creaming. Yeah Baby!

woodson…. it’s not how you start it’s how you finish. fact of the matter, says he wants to play more

than 1 year he’s gonna play his butt off. make plays at the free safety position. someting we ain’t had for years.

woodson learned how to pay zone . something hayden, porter know also something da wants to include to the defense. something oakland has never been good at, always having the likes of huff or giordano always out of position down field getting burned . signing c-dub was a good move believe that

    That’s true Oakglen.

But he’s still a player that his team didn’t want anymore.
He also couldn’t get hired by any other team and for the first three months couldn’t even get a bite.

Furthermore, if he ever enters the HOF, he’s going in a as a Green Bay Packer.
    THAT would be his preference.

    Don’t get me wrong.
Woodson was a good Raider-loved the guy-but he came into his own in Green Bay.
    And at this point.
