Hayden’s teammates had little idea about extent of his injury

ALAMEDA – Rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden is in a local hospital as a result of an abdominal issue that surfaced last week, Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday.
Hayden is expected to miss the remainder of the Raiders offseason workouts and practices, but he should be ready to go again when training camp begins in late July.
A Raiders spokesman said Hayden was admitted to the hospital late last week and that he underwent a procedure to remove scar tissue from his abdominal region.
Allen said he isn’t sure whether there’s any correlation between Hayden’s current situation and the ruptured vein Hayden suffered last November during a practice at the University of Houston.
“We can’t rule that out, obviously, but right now I don’t know exactly what the correlation is to it,” Allen said. “But we don’t anticipate it being an issue.”
Hayden underwent surgery to repair the ruptured vena cava, which supplies blood to the heart from the lower body. He was cleared by doctors to resume football activities last month after surviving an injury that is 95 percent fatal, by some accounts.
A phone call to the doctor that performed the life-saving surgery on Hayden at Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute was not returned.
Hayden participated in practice last week, when the Raiders began their organized team activities. Allen said Hayden’s symptoms surfaced soon thereafter.
“My stomach hurts so bad right now,” Hayden said via Twitter on May 20, the first day of OTA.
Safety Usama Young said he was on the field with Hayden at the start of OTA and sensed something wasn’t quite right.
“You could tell he was under the weather,” Young said. “I thought that was it; he was under the weather. … . It took me by surprise. I didn’t think he was that sick.”
Young said he has communicated with Hayden via text message and that Hayden said he is doing “a lot better.”
Linebacker Nick Roach said he didn’t even know that Hayden had been hospitalized.
Roach said he noticed Hayden with a hoodie pulled down over his head. Then again, a lot of players do that early in the morning, he added.
“I didn’t know the extent of it,” Roach said.
The Raiders selected Hayden with the 12th pick of the 2013 NFL draft. They are counting upon Hayden to crack the starting lineup at some point.
During recent interviews, Hayden said he felt good and that the only time he thinks about the injury he suffered in November is when he gets asked about it.
Allen said Hayden’s absence, combined with a calf injury to cornerback Tracy Porter, leaves the Raiders thin at cornerback and makes it all the more difficult for Hayden to succeed from the outset.
“It’s obviously not a good thing, from a football standpoint,” Allen said. “As a rookie, you need all the reps you can get and all the work you can get.”
Young said Hayden “looked the part” from what little he saw of Hayden before he was hospitalized.
“He looked pretty good,” Young said. “It looked like he was moving pretty well. He looked good, looked fast, looked quick, had good hands.”

If Russell is ready to get it done I would definitely take a flier on him and see if he’s willing to work within our perameters and see where it goes from there. To much talent to waste if we can get that arm in camp I for one would be very happy because these guys y’all call starting QB’s can’t hold a candle to that kid talent wise. Hayden’s contract must have some medical waiver in it. Pick him 12th, if he gets sick you can cut ties without salary cap consequences…

He’s not signed yet, and unless DJ hired Master P to be his agent, no one is going to let their #12 pick agree to a contract like that.

**D.J. Hayden’s College Doctor Says Latest Surgery is a Common One**

D.J. Hayden’s college doctor said he is not overly concerned about the Oakland Raiders rookie returning to the hospital for scarring in his abdomen, but said he doesn’t anticipate the first-round draft pick having a “quick, quick recovery.”

“The time frame for him to get over it will probably take a little while,” Dr. Walter Lowe told The Times on Tuesday. “I would expect this would probably be a six-week recovery for him at the very least.”

Hayden, the 12th overall pick last month, is still in a Bay Area hospital after being admitted late last week and undergoing surgery on his abdomen. The Raiders are holding off-season workouts this week.

Lowe, head physician at the University of Houston, said he does not have first-hand knowledge of Hayden’s status.

A Raiders spokesman confirmed that Hayden underwent surgery late last week for internal scarring and that doctors do not believe the most recent issue is an indication anything is seriously wrong with him.

The Raiders said they expect him to be ready to return for the start of training camp in late July.

In November, Hayden suffered a freak, life-threatening injury after colliding with a teammate at practice. He sustained a torn inferior vena cava — the vein that carries blood from the lower body back to the heart. There is no record of that type of injury occurring on a sports field, and it most often is a result of motor-vehicle accidents or on the battlefield. Doctors say 95% of people who suffer such an injury die before they reach the hospital.

A team of trauma surgeons, Ron Albarado and Phil Adams, and chief resident Laura Kreiner, performed the original 2 1/2-hour operation on Hayden at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Hayden now has a scar that runs from his navel to the top of his sternum, apparently resulting in the “adhesion.”

“An adhesion is scarring that happens from all the blood in his belly from a big, open procedure. But that scar with bowel movement — because your bowel is always moving and pushing food through — sometimes can entangle the bowel and start to strangle it off so that nothing can get past it,” Lowe said.

“Having an adhesion from a big belly surgery is something the general surgeons see day in and day out.”

Lowe said there are different ways of fixing the problem, including making another incision or a less-invasive scoping of the region.

“You lose some strength, you lose some conditioning, so this won’t be where he’s back on the practice field in two weeks,” he said.

“You just hope that it doesn’t become recurrent. You hope that this doesn’t happen twice a year or something. You can see bowel obstructions from people that have had their appendix taken out. Anything in the belly can lead to a bowel obstruction from scarring. It’s usually a one-time thing and done. So hopefully this is the end of that issue too.”

I imagine Flynn and Pryor arguing with DA for the starting spot

    Flynn: “It’s Duck Season”
    Pryor: “It’s Wabbit Season”

Bring Russel in for the minimum. One year deal with incentives. No signing bonus. Let him compete. If he becomes a fool again. Good bye.

dont understand the hate for russel

is he the first athlete with an alleged drug problem in his past? no.

is he the first first round qb that failed in his first go round? No

so why shouldnt he get another chance if he has his head on straight?

some people here act as if russel owes them something, he doesnt

U don’t understand the hate for Russell but u hated Palmer, who threw for 4k/23 and tried to play with broken ribs and a punctured lung.

    He does owe us.

He killed our beloved team with his lazy bum antics.

    He owes an apology.

    =================

pete carrol was smart to play the injury card for flynn during camp last season.

The injury cover story helped flynn keep a bit of trade value for his shockingly weak gradkowski like arm
