Raiders fire P.R. director Gilbert

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, June 1st, 2013 at 9:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders media relations director Zak Gilbert, fired by the Raiders Saturday, issued the following statement:

“I’d like to thank Mark Davis for the honor of serving the Raiders, and Reggie McKenzie for hiring me. I leave holding my chin up, knowing I dedicated every waking hour to promoting a positive image for our team. The co-workers in my Raiders family are extraordinary; the camaraderie we built was really special. Talking to Raiders fans on a weekly basis, I learned first-hand that their passion and loyalty is unmatched. I have great respect for the team’s rich history and took seriously the role of preserving it. Although disappointed that I can’t remain on the ride, I wish Reggie and Dennis Allen absolutely nothing but success in a bright future.”

Gilbert, hired by general manager Reggie McKenzie, hasn’t been at the club facility since a Sports Illustrated story authored by Jim Trotter which was published April 18 detailed how McKenzie was attempting to put an organization back together after a decade of neglect under Al Davis. Although the story cast McKenzie in a positive light, it was not well received by Mark Davis.

Instead, Gilbert has been working from home and was not attendance at at the NFL draft, the Raiders rookie minicamp or either of the club’s first two organized team activites.

Mark got up one day and had a premonition I want to show these people who’s boss

like my daddy did so he fire somebody

stay tuned for more exciting episodes of as the Raiders turn

Why do you guys care about what some talking head says for two minutes before the games start on Sunday?

Shannon Sharpe probably hasn’t spoken 100 words on the Raiders over the last 4 years.

I care about someone like Arkush, breaking every unwritten rule in sports journalist handbook, making up a complete non-story, with no sources listed or anything.

At least when Sharpe says the Raiders suck, well….we kind of do.

Arkush just lied, IMO. Flat out made up a story in a place where he knew he might get away with it.

Yea. Mike Silver is a complete POS. He comes on NFL radio, and you kinda look forward to hearing what he has to say. Because nobody on NFL network except maybe Gannon EVER even mentions the Raiders. But then Silver opens his mouth and just slams the crap out of us everytime. Granted, occasionally it’s merited. But not every time. He’s a scumbag Raider hater.

But you know what? If we get back to winning it will change substantially. We will still have plenty of haters, don’t get me wrong. Lets face it, we r basically the Howard Stern of football. Most of the people that hate us have never even SEEN us, so we will never get rid of them. But these media guys will ease off once we start winning an realize we actually have a huge fan base. Right now they cater to the Donks and Manning because they think they r the only relevant team in the division. And for now, they r right. But hopefully not for much longer.

    —————–

    Lets examine this….

Cork the dork…. he’ll jump back on the bandwagon if we are winning. But after this treason BS, I dont care. He’s a member of “them” now. Besides, he’s a Bears fan anyways.

Jerry the Rat…. again, he’ll come to our aid the moment we are winning. But considering the fact that he wont stop whining about his “buffet buddy” the mole, he’s now “one of them”. Youre either one of us, or your against us. Jerry and Cork have shown us their true colors.

Florio the Fairy…. known Raider hater through and through. Winning wont cure his issues.

Vic the Snitch….. He’s in the same boat as The Rat and The Dork. Nothing but a fair weather hack. His true allegiance is to the guy who improved the buffet in the press room, not the Raiders.

Fatso Ray Ratto….. a well known Niner sympathizer. Winning doesnt cure the disease known as Niner fan.

    Bill “the Hamburgalur” Williamson… A Donkey-Double-Agent. He’s hopeless.

Adam “The Liar” Shefter…… Another Donkey Informant. By even agreeing with this twerp that makes you guilty of treason.

Michael “The Douche” Silver….. is there really a bigger Raider Hater? No amount of SB’s would get this guy to spin something positive about us. He just goes into hiding until the next “non story” gets posted.

Zack Gilbert…. Forever to be known as “The Mole”. It’s his firing and subsequent aid from his accomplices that have created todays mess. The web of Raider Hating has never been so transparent.

Peter Queen….. This guy hasnt said one positive thing about the Raiders in my lifetime. I hate this fat fvck.

Tim Kawakaidiamikocksucker….. Herrera should have punched him when he had the chance. This guy has muted over 3000 people of the Raider Nation on twitter and counting. He wears it like a badge of honor that we hate him so much.

Anne Killion…. maybe the only proof that Tim Kawakocksucker is hetero because Im pretty sure these two have sexual relations. They are a perfect match for each other. If they had a baby they would name it “tuckrule” just to spite us.

Youre either with us or against us. None of these a55hats are going to change their attitude about the Raiders no matter how much we win.

    One Nation.

  • 0ak r8rs

JFB. Im just listing Raider haters. I never said they affected my life or were a high priority. Easy. Just saying I hate their stupid faces and wouldn’t piss on them of they were on fire. Otherwise, don’t really think about it much. Haha

What makes this otherwise benign low level firing one of potentially major implications is IF Mark stepped over Reggie to do it.

IF…that were true than it’s obvious it’s not gonna take much for Mark to go over Reggie’s head in the future.

Despite Mark vowing to let Reggie run things and to be “patient” while Reggie builds this up will he go back on that if we start out 0-4? How about 0-2?

Maybe more info will emerge as to how this all went down.

Riff brought that up earlier. Legitimate concern I suppose. My guess is that Reggie had input on this firing as well tho. Granted I have no proof of that whatsoever. I just think, and hope, that mark and Reggie t still on the same page. Because of they aren’t, then we truly r facked. Reggie has taken us on a course that is gonna take a couple of years to pay off, or at least see if it’ll pay off. The last thing we need is for mark to shlt can Reggie mid season or even after the season, no matter what happens. Blowing shlt up every 18 months is a big part of what got us into this mess in the first place.

A PR directors job is to keep the media in his pocket.

The Arkush story and date of it coming out, if those guys had any couth they went to the Raiders and asked if they wanted to comment on it before reporting it like all media outlets do, just reaked of Gilbert being too green.

Arkush would never dream of leaking a story like that with Harbaugh’s dad on his death bed, or about the Patriots or Steelers.

Arkush took advantage of a green PR guy, and pushed what turned out to be a BS story to keep himself relevant (which he hardly is anymore).

Arkush said afterwords he had no idea about DA’s dad when he broke the “story”, but he also added he still would’ve run with it because it was a big story.

Arkush was emphatic that he “checked, double checked, then triple checked” with his sources before running with it.

Imo, it was a lot made out of nothing. My thought is that there probably was a meeting where Mark gauged Grudens interest in “possibly’ coming aboard in the future in some capacity.

    That’s my guess.

Just because Mark didn’t have his big-boy pants on yet and couldn’t hire his own PR guy and had Reggie do it, doesn’t mean Mark went over Reggie’s head to fire the guy.

Florio recently on the fired Gilbert and the SI article:

“Indeed, he (Mark) met with Trotter and gave Trotter quotes — quotes in which Mark Davis admits that it ultimately was his decision to trade for Carson Palmer, and in which Mark Davis admits to having no expertise regarding football operations. Unless Gilbert promised Mark Davis that it would be a puff piece and that Trotter wouldn’t use anything Davis said that remotely could be construed as embarrassing or negative (which almost never happens), Davis has no legitimate beef with Gilbert.”

  • RaiderRockstar

    Go Mark Davis!!
    Go Reggie & Dennis!

    Go LeBron!
    Go Heat, baby!!

  • alex7

Again, Mark GAVE quotes to Trotter for that piece.

And the article doesn’t say anything contrary to what we here agree on:

    1) Raiders didn’t even have a groundskeeper, and that’s ridiculous.
    2) Davis had the golden touch for a few decades, then it deteriorated almost hand-in-hand with his health.
    3) Davis recently gave terrible FA deals to Javon Walker, D. Hall, Gibril Wilson, and Kevin Boss.
    4) Trading 1st round picks for Moss and Seymour when the rest of the roster was terrible were unwise moves.
    5) We were a league-high $31 million over the cap last year when McKenzie took over. He’s done an excellent job with that since.

Where is the over-the-top terrible biased writing??

To simplify it for you, he gave OTHER TEAMS the first chance. Teams with better reputations.

  • DJ Johnny

To say Arkush was a “friend” of mine would be stretch but I did know him professionally when he hosted the “Dick Jauron Show” on radio in Chicago and the station I was working for was an affiliate, so I would occasionally talk with him and exchange e-mails on occasion and record his localized intros and what not, and he always seemed like a real cool guy, but he made no secret his desire to be more “national” and I can’t say that he wouldn’t take a gamble with the Gruden story just in case there was some truth to it.

I emailed him during the time that “story” broke and he never responded. In fact e-mailed him a couple times even after the story was denied by Gilbert and never did hear from him. Lol.

SMDH, you can’t be fking serious. First off Gilbert hasn’t been in the Raiders building for months, he has been on paid leave. I actually don’t think I need to go any farther than that, its obvious you are clueless to say the least

  • alex7

    lol Realtrue

what does Gilbert have to do with the fact that a team’s PR plays into a free agents decision as to what teams he visits first?

The Raiders PR has been subpar for a decade. Free agents, like Woodson, not surprisingly choose to visit OTHER teams first and give them first chance.

  • alex7

perhaps you don’t mind making a restaurant with a bad reputation your FIRST choice as to where to eat…

but you’d be in the minority on that one.

In an entertainment business like the NFL, PR matters. Where has the Raiders’ incoming $ ranked in the last decade? Near the bottom. That matters when it’s time to put a quality product on the field.
