Bergstrom finally finds a home on the offensive line

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, June 11th, 2013 at 3:31 pm in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA – Second-year offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom finally has a home, at left guard, after spending most of his rookie season bouncing around from guard to offensive tackle, from the left side of the line to the right, sometimes all in one day.
Bergstrom was Oakland’s top draft pick in 2012, selected late in the third round. With veterans entrenched at guard and tackle, Bergstrom worked at multiple positions in an attempt to become more versatile and thereby more valuable as a backup.
Now that veteran Cooper Carlisle is gone, Bergstrom is the leading candidate to start at left guard, though he is being pushed by fellow second-year player Lucas Nix.
Bergstrom said it’s “nice” knowing where’s he’s going to line up each day. He also finds comfort in the playing time he received as a backup last season.
“I was going in last year just hoping not to screw up,” Bergstrom said Tuesday. “This year, the idea is going in with a little more confidence, ready to play. That’s kind of the next step after being able to play a little bit. So, it was a big opportunity last year.”
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said the starting spot at left guard, as is the case with all positions, is open to competition. However, it’s Bergstrom that is spending a majority of the time with the first-team offensive line right now.
“That’s a big deal, a big motivating factor, coming in knowing there’s a spot that’s open and being competed for,” Bergstrom said. “That’s kind of the nice thing about it this year, with that goal in mind, as opposed to coming in and telling you ‘Well, you might need to play a little tackle, so be ready for that.’. It’s ‘know the guard and be ready for guard.’ ”

    Not sure how that pertains to Flynn being the starter.

    He was named the starter right? or did we both miss that?

    So you are just going to deny the many statements that it’s still a competition? No QB has a shot other than Flynn. If Flynn’s arm falls off he’s still the starter because he’s the guy and the competition is a shame. That is essentially what you are saying right? The competition is fake and Flynn is being handed the job.

    It’s not a crime if Pryor doesn’t start immediately what matters is that he developes into what he sees for himself. I think he’s going about it the right way. If that does’t satisfy us fans that doesn’t matter. What matters is when he’s ready he’ll be ready the rets of his career. Players can develope bad habits if they’re not brought along the right way. I like the way he’s going about it.
    +++++++++++++

    Going into year three and he can finally command a huddle….at that pace give him another 6 years and he might learn how to throw!

    ======================

    with out a doubt.

    knapp brought lienart to try and teach his offense and basically wrote pryor off from the start.

    This happened even though pryor had better performances than lienatr (and palmer) during the pre season

    Knapp wanted the guy he knew and never gave pryor a fair shake.

    Both he and allen looked stupid as a result and knapp was canned for this among other reasons.

    it almost cost allen his job as well and im sure it was an uncomfortable meeting with jr and big mack when they asked him to explain his infamous ‘he isnt ready to be the back up’ statement

    knapp and allens actions regarding pryor were indefensible all time blunders

  • SnBG

    poor thing, I’ll bet you have had your hopes up every year since 2003 lol.

    putz

    I’ll look at the roster and the coaching staff and make a judgment instead of just closing my eyes and pretending it is all good.

    Like I said, the real test will be next offseason. We will have a full compliment of picks and cap space to make some moves. I am sure Tarver will be gone, and hopefully Allen too. Hire a better coaching staff and get some more talent on the roster and maybe we can get a wild card spot.

    If you think we will contend this season, you are crazy.
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    Some of you’re argument is based on speculation and not really looking at last year for what it was. A talentless team hampered by the cap and injuries stopped the coaching staff from competing. We don’t really know how the team will be so it’s spec to say Allen and Tarver won’t be here.

    All restructuring does is kick the can down the line a little bit. We could have had a little extra space last year and got maybe a few guys, but no one that makes the team a serious superbowl contender. However it would be harder for us to get talent in the future since we would have just clogged up the cap there. Bad contracts and contract management is why we are here.

    Has Pryor ever said anything publicly about any of his teammates? Seems like he just talks about himself and his progress all the time. Just odd for a guy entering his 3rd year.

    ============================

    I guess you have to read the article.

    “Few people give Pryor a legitimate shot at making the huge leap from third-stringer to starter in one season. Pryor said Tuesday that he doesn’t get caught up in the speculation.”

    “That talk is nonsense,” Pryor said. “It doesn’t matter right now, as long as we’re helping each other, we’re getting better and building team chemistry. … Right now, not knowing who the starting quarterback is going to be and who’s getting talked about, that’s the thing that’s not very important.”

    Sounds like he’s thinking about his teammates to me.

    Which is most important for a qb?

    1) arm strength

    3) decision making

    6) leadership
    7) being able to get in and out of the huddle

    Is it me or does Pryor not talk about any teammates? Only himself and his progress.

    ====

    The counter point, or perhaps a corresponding one there is that all of the best quotes about Pryor progress come from Pryor himself.

    Many said he can’t learn the playbook. The only quote that he learned and knew from last season came from Pryor himself. Not from a coach or even any reporter.

    Does he work hard? He himself says so and in this case there is evidence from others that he does too. Unfortunately, hard work will only get you to your potential and no further. He’s been working this hard ever since becoming a pro and his decision making still barely rivals that of high school QBs. I think we’ve seen the ceiling in that department. I mean, if he studies that much harder than everyone else and still fails to learn the whole playbook what does that tell you?
