Bergstrom finally finds a home on the offensive line

ALAMEDA – Second-year offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom finally has a home, at left guard, after spending most of his rookie season bouncing around from guard to offensive tackle, from the left side of the line to the right, sometimes all in one day.
Bergstrom was Oakland’s top draft pick in 2012, selected late in the third round. With veterans entrenched at guard and tackle, Bergstrom worked at multiple positions in an attempt to become more versatile and thereby more valuable as a backup.
Now that veteran Cooper Carlisle is gone, Bergstrom is the leading candidate to start at left guard, though he is being pushed by fellow second-year player Lucas Nix.
Bergstrom said it’s “nice” knowing where’s he’s going to line up each day. He also finds comfort in the playing time he received as a backup last season.
“I was going in last year just hoping not to screw up,” Bergstrom said Tuesday. “This year, the idea is going in with a little more confidence, ready to play. That’s kind of the next step after being able to play a little bit. So, it was a big opportunity last year.”
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said the starting spot at left guard, as is the case with all positions, is open to competition. However, it’s Bergstrom that is spending a majority of the time with the first-team offensive line right now.
“That’s a big deal, a big motivating factor, coming in knowing there’s a spot that’s open and being competed for,” Bergstrom said. “That’s kind of the nice thing about it this year, with that goal in mind, as opposed to coming in and telling you ‘Well, you might need to play a little tackle, so be ready for that.’. It’s ‘know the guard and be ready for guard.’ ”

Reggie’s safe for the next two years, dont’ know what his contract is.

But DA might not make it past the Bye week if this team doesn’t come out swinging.

ok so if the majority think knapp hurt tp6 development, in his first year didnt he miss the 1st quarter of the season and wasnt allowed to practice? he may be a 3rd year quarterback on paper but his circumstances warrant him getting a fair chance to develop

    @@@@@@@@@@@@

I don’t think anyone ever said Pryor shouldn’t have the opportunity to develop, just that he can’t. If we r wrong than that would be awesome. I’ve said this before. If a guy w Pryor’s mobility and desire and leadership could throw too? He could be a franchise QB. But he’s running out of time. Fast.

I understand, and if he gets a legit shot this pre season its all anyone can ask. Personally I hope 1 qb emerges not that they all do bad like today. I wouldnt count tp6 out though, he has that “it factor”, we’ll see.

He’s had one year. How about giving him 2 or 3 before you call him a bad coach and try to restart the coaching revolving door again? Which was a big part of the problems over the last two decades, I would hope you agree?
    ——

No, I don’t agree. He’s done absolutely nothing to warrant any more time. Revolving door is fine until you find one worth keeping, until then keep giving the suckers the boot.

If we have a shot at getting a top notch QB next year, either by draft or FA, do you pull the trigger or give this trio more time just because they’ve only had one year?

I’m not worried too much about today. As usual a bunch of overreaction, some from myself. Imagine the whole year is over because of a couple of pre-preseason reports? And btw, the offense may not have looked great, but lets give some credit to the defense. 9 new starters and so far so good, w our 3rd round draft pick playing w the ones. One of these QBs will put it together. Two brand new QBs. One that’s barely had any reps. And a new offensive system…..again. Jeez. A couple of bad balls and all of a sudden the while team should just go out and shoot themselves? How about if we see a few REGULAR season games before we say that, much less pre-preseason practices without pads?

    Players on DA.

“He knew how to get us ready,” cornerback Champ Bailey told NFL Network, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “I give him a lot of credit for the success we had this year. . . . He’s one of the most intense coaches I’ve had.

“I know what type of team he’s going to have. Very intense, hard-nosed, tough. That’s the way he is. That’s what I expect his team to be.”

Linebacker Von Miller agreed. “They’re getting a guy that’s going to come in right away, and he’s going to get it done,” Miller told NFL Network. “That’s what he did for us. He came in, he laid out a plan for us, he told us, ‘This is how we’re going to do it, and this will work,’ and that’s what happened. We improved our defense an incredible amount. . . . I think he’ll do the same thing with the Oakland Raiders.”

I can read. Unlike you I don’t freak out about pre-preseason without pads. I don’t think Pryor can be a QB, but you don’t see me slamming him for batted balls do you? No. Because it doesn’t matter anymore that Pryor had a mediocre practice than it does that Flynn had one. It says almost nothing about either guy. New QBs. New offensive system. New TEs. Holy crap. One or two bad pre-preseason practices and Flynn is the worst pickup ever an Reggie should be fired for trading for him and the whole season is over? Talk about having an agenda? Holy crap.

When current head coach Dennis Allen took over in 2012, he faced a tough task—rebuilding a team which had mortgaged its future.
Two drafts later—this year’s with nearly a full complement of picks—has Allen done enough to reverse the damage of poor trades and decisions like the Palmer one?
While the jury is naturally still out, it’s clear he’s made some significant progress.
In the 2012 NFL draft, Allen and the Raiders were down to just two picks (plus three supplemental ones) after a string of decisions including the Palmer trade, a move up in the 2011 draft for Joe Barksdale (cut that season) and Taiwan Jones as well as the selection of Terrelle Pryor in the supplemental draft.

Despite that, Allen and his staff did a good job of picking players who would pan out. Of their six picks, five are still on the roster and the sixth—seventh-round outside linebacker Nathan Stupar—is still in the league, playing for the San Francisco 49ers.
Juron Criner, a 2012 5th round pick, is one of multiple players from that draft who show promise
Maybe there weren’t any home runs but the Raiders got quality with every pick in a draft they couldn’t afford a miss on.
