Are the Raiders going to stay in Oakland?

By Steve Corkran

Here’s a detailed look at where the Raiders stand in their efforts to get a new stadium built in Oakland. Time is running out, for the Raiders current lease extension expires after the 2013 season.

Theg said it best. Time will tell and 18 months is simply not enough to evaluate especially given what had to be done to this team.

IMO, the 2014 team will be a much better barometer of the job Reggie has done than this year or last.

    DJ

My post on 3639 shows a much bigger problem than two picks.
These were all first and second rounders. Most are out of the league or never really contributed to any NFL team.

The fact of the matter is that in the cap era, you must draft well especially with your high round picks and we missed badly over that ten year time frame.

I know many of you would like a clean break from the Al years but the cold reality is that a draft pick in this day and age ties you to that player for at least four years. In the last two years Al/Hue did even worse by giving away our first and second rounders.

“As of March 25, 2012, The Oakland Raiders held TWO SELECTIONS in the 2012 NFL Draft (a 5th and 6th round pick), which was just about a month away. The NFL awarded the Raiders three COMPENSATORY PICKS March 26. (A 3rd round 4th round and 5th round pick).”

to me losing gruden/allen hurt our franchise the most

I agree it hurt. Crazy that his replacement gets accused of actually throwing the SB. I don’t think that’s the case, but at the least he seemed like an idiot for his SB game plan.

Al gets due blame for a lot of things but I don’t want him to be a convenient fall back for everything that goes wrong going forward.

  • DJ Johnny

As dire as our situation seems with our 32nd power ranking, worst qb in the league ranking and all the other negative predictions about the 2013 Raiders, this is still primo koolaid time…if there is any time appropriate for that.

A couple days before camp, with the whole season right in front of us…we’re 0-0. We’re tied with everyone else. We’re still in the playoff picture (ha).

But seriously, there’s always a couple teams who shock the league each year. Maybe the Raiders will be one of them.

  • The Big Banana

Good posts, DJ. Agree. Al deserves blame for many things but it goes overboard in here. Good points about Russell and McClain. The latter was a sure fire pick by many experts and the former wasn’t a consensus bust pre-draft by any stretch. Folks lose sight of this and like to throw the book at ole Al.

Hindsight in here is impeccable as ever.

busy work day thus far. what did I miss the last 4 or 5 hours?

    @RR

Well for starters you had the usual how good of a job is RM doing….then the real debate right now is can we still be blaming Al Davis for things or has that card been played enough already?

  • RaiderRockstar

if Oden goes to the heat and stays healthy, god help us all

Is it unthinkable that Flynn’s two games and 100+ rating wasn’t a fluke?

Does DMAC have the ability to be an mvp type player?

Is our defense improved on paper?

It’s not crazy to think these questions could be answered in the Raiders favor.

  • Charlie

I go back further than many of you and I believe the Davis/Wolf tandem produced the best results for the Raiders.

Gruden and Allen made great progress as well.

Mr. Davis was extremely knowledgeable about the game and had brilliant insight into many facets of football operations. He also could be very vindictive and hard to work with.

Wolf, Flores, Gruden, Allen all ultimately left the Raiders because of these relationship issues.
Mr. Davis needed someone who he trusted to balance his somewhat mercurial personality especially when it came to player acquisition and scheme of attack.
That became even more evident as he got older.
No disrespect intended but IMO Mr. Davis should have had much more capable help around him in his later years. Men half his age have trouble with the roles he was trying to fill.
Amy Trask and Lombardi were not capable football personnel people. Sadly in his last years, he had isolated himself in this area and the Raiders paid dearly.

Al we can now do is look forward.

If we had a solid coaching staff up and down it would seem things could fall in our favor……BUT

I admit I was one of the ones screaming for McClain…

    I didn’t want Russell though…

and I didn’t want McTiptoe… (although the guy I wanted would have been a disaster)…

    I ain’t naming names…

i’m thinking he should have spent more time grooming his son to take over…

including responsibility and job titles that show he is to become the new man at the top…

    Pete

    Agreed.
Strange how that did not happen.

Perhaps Mark indicated no interest in a football career till after his father passed away.

Perhaps the two of them knew they could never work together.

    surprise stats from last season…

the Raiders Pass Defense ranked 20th last year

despite losing Bartell & Spencer to injuries early, then Lee got hurt and Adams got hurt.. then Bartell & Lee got cut and Ross/Chekwa got some playing time

all this with Huff playing out of position at CB for the first time in his NFL career and ZERO pass rush

hot dang. that’s crazy. If somebody would have asked me I would have told them our pass defense was DEAD LAST a season ago

  • RaiderRockstar

Keep an eye on Jones, converted from running back to corner – he played defense in high school – who should contribute more in the kicking game while adjusting to this position switch. (Bair)

    wow, maybe Jhill is right?

Taiwan Jones to make the final 53??

Part of that is teams jumping out to big leads and not needing to pass on us. Part of it is Tarver doing a very good job. Did we start the same players in the secondary for any 2 consecutive games all season?

  • M.Shorter

I’m a huge fan of Oden. I jus wanna see he him succeed. Even if he plays for the Heat.

  • guest123

    ******

I doubt it. Not rooting against him, but the depth at CB is too much for Jones to be anything more than a ST guy.

  • RaiderRockstar

Giordano started 14 games in Huff’s place and was exposed at times in coverage, giving up five touchdowns and a 63-percent opponent completion rate

    wow!!

good luck in St Louis, Gio

wouldn’t a 20th ranked offense be a career best for Olson?

  • M.Shorter

    @ Rockstar

Bynum. When I go back and look at highlights of Oden he look like he’s gunna break his knee when he lands after jumping.

Players arrive tomorrow, have physicals and meetings Thursday and participate in the first practice Friday.

we play Dallas in preseason like 16 days from now.

20th ranked pass defense…with only Carter applying any kind of consistent pressure.

    Yes, I’m okay with Tarver.

Quarterbacks (4): *Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor, Tyler Wilson, Matt McGloin. Scouting report: Flynn will be given every chance to establish himself as the starter. Pryor should get some work in specialty packages suited to his skill set, and Wilson is a potential starter down the road as the best pure passer on the team.
    ==================================

I have a major issue with this report

pryor according to this so called scouting report is limited to ‘specialty packages”

this is code language for wild cat, or athlete playing qb or more of the same bias that most qbs like pryor face.

The write up then gets worse by touting wilson as the only long term potential starter.

Doesnt the writer know that pryor is the number 2 qb and will get every chance to play qb. Is the writer unaware that pryor will not be playing a slash Stewart role, and will major snaps in the preseason?

Is the writer blind to the fact that the number 2 qb is first off the bench when the starter fails or is injured and will not be limited to ‘specialty packages” when he is called upon to start or save a game?

lastly the code language used for wilson is “pure passer”

we must define the term “pure passer”. How can wilson be the best “pure passer” if he has such a terrible wind up and throwing motion? His mechanics and throwing motion were and are far worse than pryor and flynn. If not far worse they must be viewed as at least sub par.

Does “pure passer” denote accuracy? pryor was more accurate in his final tour as a starter than wilson was and according to reports was also better in the min than wilson was.

To dismiss or discount pryor while elevating wilson is propaganda and baseless hyperbole.

glad that camp is here the preseason will be fun, especially watching the so called fans and media eat crow and be exposed for their various race based agandas

    ====================================

I have told you this a hundred times. Pryor has been tenured here the longest. Pryor is the highest draft choice currently playing Q on the roster. If Pryor is not the undisputed #1 in the coaches minds, he is number three on the depth chart.
