Raiders WR suspended for four games

Raiders second-year wide receiver Andre Holmes was suspended for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, according to an NFL press release Saturday.
Practice is starting right now, so the release will have to suffice for now:

NFL press release

“Andre Holmes of the Oakland Raiders has been suspended without pay for the team’s first four games of the 2013 regular season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.

Holmes will be eligible to return to the Raiders’ active roster on Monday, September 30 following the team’s September 29 game against the Washington Redskins.

Holmes is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.”

Dennis pitta done for 4 to 6 weeks minimum I think. Dislocated hip. Sucks, but I can’t stand that guy.

I which WR “connects” the best with the starting QB.
It will be interesting to see if each QB has a favorite.
I wonder who got the most practice with TP over the summer?

    —–

good points. i think TP did a lot of work in the off-season with moore, streater, and others. so may have a slight edge with chemistry and rapport.

Yea. Well Al was right. No contact or pads today tho. So it doesn’t bother me. Hope it’s just a mojo thing like Plunk says. Hope NOT to see it tmw in pads.

It’d be very exciting if Pryor straight up wins the job.

  • Crawfish Joe

@VicTafur: QBs have been solid. Pryor definitely showing arm strength advantage over Flynn, who just floated out pattern

I’m a huge Pryor fan. Good to see him getting some positive reviews.

Let’s wait and see if he can throw the short and intermediate routes accurately as well. If he can, then I’ll start looking at Pryor jerseys.

Jerry, Cork and Kawakami were in a different portion and didn’t see them grab some dogs. I took two. Ratto was in front of me.

I was in the ‘national’ portion of the media booth, it seemed. Which didn’t make sense.

I was covering the game for the Eureka paper because both Rey Maualuga and Maurice Purify (Eureka alumns) were on the Bengals that year.

And since Oakland is 5-6 hours from Eureka, got to cover the game.

    WR depth chart…

    FLANKER (right side) listed as
    Ford-Criner-Butler

    SPLIT-END (left side) listed as
    Moore-Streater-Cribbs

With Ford injury-prone, Criner blowing his chance, it’s interesting to hear how Butler is coming along as he might eventually ascend to starting FL.

Personally, I’m very high on him anyway, and think he’ll ascend.

I’d like to see all those DB’s fielding punts in practice. I would think it would help tracking balls in the air.

we’ll see when the pads go on tomorrow

if TP can get away from the tacklers and make some big plays down field and with his feet versus Flynn taking sacks and dumping the ball off… this competition will get heated fast!

That’s not quite how it works. They’d just move Streater over to Z receiver.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

    #164….

They would for sure. Good point.

But that means Butler would also move into the #3, back-up for both Z and X.

He fits more as the slot guy, IMHO.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

If he’s known for his hands (which he is, yes), why is he dropping so many easy numbers-catches? He has to cement himself as a machine catching everything, otherwise those behind him on the depth chart (butler, vernon, etc) who might be catching better, will push him to the roster bubble.

Agreed. Vernon could be a slot guy, too. No scholarships.

  • Crawfish Joe

The more confidence and the more first team reps Pryor get, the quicker he will earn that #1 spot.

The best part of being in the media booth that day was this: Several beat writers actually cheered when Myers stripped Andre Caldwell of the ball with the Raiders recovering the fumble to set up the win.

Cheering is a big no-no for journalists, but, since the Raiders were struggling so badly, a little ray of sunshine brought cheers and claps from the writers that day, I guess.

  • J Hill

When did Criner blow his chance?

  • PlunkforHOF

If Pryor keeps it up, we may have a new starting QB.. I am totally cool with that.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

Vernon had a pretty prodigious college resume, someone more in line with the smart polished route runner. Butler is underrated and can blow the lid open on CBs and Safeties. I’d say those two have a good chance to make a name for themselves this year. Both sleepers at WR.

As there ARE some questions around Ford’s injury-proneness, Cribbs every-down receiving ability, Criner’s development vs competition.

“blowing” not “blown”…hasn’t blown it yet, but is apparently dropping too many passes, so is in the process of blowing it.

I remember reading an article about Brice Butler from the Seattle paper. Story stated Pete Caroll wanted to either take Butler late in the draft or sign him as an undrafted free agent.

The conversations between Butler and the Seahawks’ staff were in regards to switching him from WR to CB.

  • http://wix.com/ggeden/ggeden GG

    #178….

    Crazy talk from Seahawks staff.

Watching his college snaps, he shows promise as a WR, runs good routes across the tree, has good hands, vertical threat.

  • jackasspuria

    GG

    Indeed.

I’m trying to find the link to story, but, if I remember correctly, gist of it was the Seahawks were hoping to have Butler make a strong conversion like Richard Sherman did. Sherman was a highly touted WR prospect at Stanford, but turned to defense his final two years there.

  • The Big Banana

How many passes has Criner dropped? I only read about the one.

I have always seen Ford as a guy with talent but only playing for a big payday. Not that I blame him, as he is a small man in a big mans game. I just don’t think he will ever deliver a full season of quality football.
