Raiders sign Seabass to extension

Some quick hits from Friday morning’s practice session:

– The Raiders announced the signing of place kicker Sebastian Janikowski to a four-year extension following practice. Janikowski told reporters he hopes to retire a Raider and that is relieved a deal got done.

Timing was on Janikowski’s side, given that the Raiders have ample cap space next season. In Shane Lechler’s case, the Raiders had zero room in his walk year.

Janikowski said general manager Reggie McKenzie called in the offseason and expressed a desire to get a deal done.

Other key players who could be targeted for extensions with expiring deals include left tackle Jared Veldheer, defensive end Lamarr Houston and running back Darren McFadden. There are a number of new players on one-year deals as well should the Raiders determine they fit in to future plans.

– A strong performance from running back Rashad Jennings, particularly in short-yardage. Jennings has heavy feet, the ability to break tackles and could end up being a solid red-zone and third-and-1 option.

– Wide receiver Brice Butler had a strong showing, catching a short pass from Flynn and juking cornerback Tracy Porter on a nice catch-and-run play.

– Free safety Charles Woodson made a diving intercepted off a deflected pass from Flynn that went off the hands of tight end David Ausberry.

– Cornerback Taiwan Jones also had a deflection-interception, but later was victimized on a third-and-1 play when fullback Jamize Olawale got loose on a circle route, with Matt McGloin hitting him in stride for a big gainer.

– Remaining out of practice for the Raiders, among others, were guard Lucas Nix, wide receiver/return specialist Jacoby Ford, running back Latavius Murray and defensive end Lamarr Houston.

Returning to practice was defensive tackle Stacy McGee. McGee didn’t finish however, and newly acquired Myles Wade was injured also, meaning the Raiders will be on the market again for defensive tackles.

– NFL officials were at practice and will hold presentations for both the media and the players on rule changes and points of emphasis. Among the rule changes that will be of particular interest to Woodson _ the elimination of the tuck rule.

– Special teams coach Bobby April is a stickler for executing a kickoff return block at the 25-yarfd line instead of the 20-yard line, as one Raiders player found out in direct terms.

– Quarterback Tyler Wilson seems to be getting fewer snaps. One one play he fumbled a center snap, then attempted to throw over the middle, with the batted ball being intercepted by Jones.

– Cornerback D.J. Hayden remains in a red jersey and unable to truly mix it up in coverage, and it showed on one completion to tight end Brian Leonhardt when he was only able to make a half-hearted swipe at knocking the ball loose.

It might come down to him or Jack Crawford.

Tafur or someone said He’d flashed, but we won’t know anything for a while.

He will need to demonstrate in the pre season.

    ________
Crawford playing exclusively at lde, bass rde and olb in “other” formations

Ok. So there’s room for both, scheme wise.

“I dont buy the racist agenda perpetuated by the elite to keep the common man down.

I am Mexican, proud of it, and could not care less if some skinny whiteboy called me a wetback.”

You sir are a very intelligent person! If you do not allow it to hurt you then you take away the power it had and was being used against you.

Anybody who knows football and was fooled by the facade of the last few years need to grasp reality, we have a legitimate football man in Reggie and i like his plan, please consider the fact that we are being run by a legit personnel man

Bass started all 50 games he could have in college.

That alone, is pretty damn impressive, no matter what hillbilly school it was at.

heard he just made a killer catch, anyone care to tell me about it?

    “““““““““““““““““““““““““““
Made two, almost had a third….

First one, line drive down rf line. Makes the catch a couple feet from the line, then hits the brakes before the “padded” wall at Wrigley..

Second one, slicing, sinking line drive, towards the line one the run then dives to make the catch…

One he missed, bullett to right center, on the dead run he reaches for the ball, goes off the heel of glove. Prevents run from scoring, holds batter to only a single……..

What does Crawford bring to the table?

Just seems like a less athletic, lolly-gagging Bobby Hamilton.

Can’t rush the passer, can’t just the ball-carrier, doesn’t seem to play ST’s.

What is he good for? What’s the upside?

I honestly think it might be blocking FG’s and getting his hands up in the passing windows.
    ———————————
I’ve read some tweets from observers at practice that say Crawford lacks “hand fighting” and “moves”.

    Basicly, he’s easily blocked.

He talks to himself about his own whacked out barely understandable sentences he posted earlier then thinks that makes him somehow popular or famous.

It was nice, but it didn’t last nearly long enough. Kind of like most of our offensive possessions the past 10 years or so give or take…

Jack Crawford had motor issues at Penn State.

Never really saw the upside in that quick.

You get this Londers who are highly intelligent, articulate and know nothing of football.

Crawford probably saw football as a way to get a great education.

Watson is at least a mean SOB. Probably not too concerned about taking summer classes at Florida State right now.

  • Plunketthead

Matt McGloin has been trotting out with the third team while Tyler Wilson is now relegated to the fourth team. McGloin had one of his more impressive passes this camp when he got Taiwan Jones to bite on a fake underneath to Jamize Olawale and McGloin threw a perfect pass to Olawale who took it for a long gain.

Pass rushing/blocking drills seem to be dominated by the offensive line. Very little pressure is being generated by the pass rushers. The only time I saw a significant rush was when Andre Carter went up against Khalif Barnes. He beat Barnes outside and would have at very least forced the quarterback to have to flee the pocket.

Good article with new stuff by Levi. That’s just a short paste

  • RAIDERMAN99

I think it’s only fair that if Riley Cooper is castigated and fined – and that if it’s appropriate for players to say they ‘can’t or don’t want to play with’ a teammate that hurls racial epithets in a drunken rage – that Khalif Barnes gets the same retroactive treatment that Cooper is currently getting.

    NO JUSTICE NO PEACE.

That’s why I’m waiting for the preseason to start. We’ll have a much better idea if our passrush is that bad, or our o-line is that good.

I am still in shock that Riley got drunk and threatened a black dude with that word we are not allowed to use.

He may never play football again and I would not be surprised if Jesse and Al called for some hard time.

I heard it also.. Listen to them , mainly cause they’re pretty funny, and have good interviews…

Matt “Money” Smith always bags the Raiders.. He’s a Bears fan..He went to a Bears vs. LA Raiders game when he first moved here. Almost got his ass kicked in the stands. Has hated the Raiders ever since..

I heard him tell the story a few years back.. At least he’s honest about it.. I’ll give him that..
