Notes, quotes and observations from camp — Day 8

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 at 7:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

NAPA — The more you watch Terrelle Pryor, the more convinced you are that he has a legitimate chance to succeed as a quarterback in the NFL. On Saturday, his wide-ranging talents were on full display before 1,000 or so fans.
Coach Dennis Allen also took note of Pryor’s performance, in particular a long throw to rookie wide receiver Brice Butler on a post route.
The ball traveled 60 yards or so in the air and found Butler in stride at the goal line for a touchdown. The fans excitement began with a low rumble as Pryor released the ball, it built as the ball neared its intended target and reached a crescendo when Butler made the catch and landed in the end zone.
“That deep ball was a heck of a play and heck of a throw,” Allen said. “All Terrelle’s got to do is keep his head down and keep working. He has improved and he’s gotten better every day. And that’s what we expect.”
Pryor completed numerous other passes and even showed off his running ability from time to time, when called plays broke down.

– Left offensive tackle Jared Veldheer underwent an MRI on his triceps. The exam returned negative. Allen said he expects Veldheer back at practice soon. Alex Barron took Veldheer’s reps with the first-team offense. Veldheer watched practice while sporting a baseball cap.

– Wide receiver Jacoby Ford returned to practice after missing most of the past five practices. He said a sore tendon behind one of his knees caused him to sit out since last Sunday.
He said the injury just happened without his doing anything to cause it and that it’s nothing to worry about, unlike each of the past two training camps, when he suffered a broken hand and a foot injury.
“At first it was kind of upsetting, but it’s part of the game,” Ford said. “I’m doing everything I can to take care of my body in the right way. That last year, I really had no choice because of the foot surgery. I’m glad to get back from the leg. It’s something just real minor, so it was nothing for me to panic about or anything. It’s just like more nagging than anything and just a little bit frustrating. But I’m fine now.”
Allen said he’s eager to get a long look at Ford, especially given he didn’t get to see Ford for long last season before he needed a season-ending surgery.

– Barron also has received reps at right offensive tackle. However, it sounds as if Khalif Barnes is on solid ground in terms of keeping his starting job.
“I’ve been very pleased with Khalif Barnes,” Allen said. “Where he’s at, he’s done a good job for us.”

– Defensive tackles Vance Walker and Stacy McGee were part of a large contingent of Raiders that missed practice. Walker and McGee just returned to practice Friday, only to be back on the sideline a day later.
In all, more than a dozen players missed practice, though no one new surfaced on the list.

– Allen spoke for the first time since the Raiders signed Sebastian Janikowski to a four-year contract extension. Naturally, he’s thrilled to know that he can check kicker off his list for the next five years.
“That’s great,” Allen said. “He’s one of the best kickers to ever play this game, he’s a weapon for us. I’ve said anytime we cross the 50(-yard line), we’re nearing field-goal range anyway. So, it’s a huge weapon to have a guy like him who puts points on the board for you, so I’m glad we got him.”
Six other key players are in the position Janikowski was in until Friday; entering the final year of their contract — running back Darren McFadden, fullback Marcel Reece, Veldheer, defensive end Lamarr Houston, Ford and long-snapper Jon Condo.
Allen made it clear that he is interested in getting some of those guys tied up sooner rather than later, and certainly before free agency rolls around next spring.
“Well, obviously, I’m not going to get into any real negotiations,” Allen said, “but there are some players on this team that we would like to go ahead and shore up.”

– Allen said he hasn’t broken down how many reps players are going to get in the Raiders exhibition opener Friday night. However, it’s clear that presumptive starting quarterback Matt Flynn is going to get plenty of playing time, if not right away.
“Matt’s going to get some work in the preseason,” Allen said. “I don’t think there’s any question about that, so we want to make sure we get him enough work so that he’ll be ready to go when the regular season comes around.”
Flynn has started only two regular-season games in his five NFL seasons. Pryor has made one start in his two seasons. Tyler Wilson and Matt McGloin are rookies. Therefore, Allen is faced with four quarterbacks that need as many snaps as possible.

I have zero confidence in Ford. If I’m Reg I wait till after this season to even consider an extension.

Gotta give Reggie and DA some credit. It seems they have identified a core group of players and r getting them signed now. Despite the fact that they were drafted by Al. Perhaps they don’t have an agenda to get rid of all Al players? Perhaps just the ones that suck or r overpaid? Hrm…….

Flynn is not a check down guy, where to people get this?

He is almost reckless at times.

YPA for his career is higher than almost every season CArson Palmer has ever had.

Funny, I watched everyone of Flynn’s snaps in his two starts. He wasn’t a check down king.
He does have a high release though. Looks kind of strange at times.

Well look again. Also his play in that Lions game is very deceiving. This is were he got all his hype.
A lot of dink n dunk and YAC (yards after catch). His arm is weak no denying that and he is not that mobile(sacks). All this with a top tier offense that year. Can you say overrated? “King Checkdown”

This agenda nonsense is, as I dub it, the shallow end of the pool.

I mean what, Sparano and Olsen and others are just going to get in line with DA and his agenda’s and push winning aside? These guys didn’t even know who he was 3 years ago, they aren’t beholden to him.

And let’s just say hypothetically DA is doing the agenda thing. YOu think C-Wood won’t speak on it? Get a grip.

We got all kinds of one-year deal guys, if the season goes sour, and there is a bunch of “agenda based” playing time handed out, better believe we will hear about it.

So can it for now would you??

  • Just Fire Baby

We all seen the Lions game.

I believe he threw two TD’s that were perfectly thrown passes that traveled 40+ yards in the air.

What do you want, for him to launch a ball 70 yards in the air? When do you ever see that?

  • willy91137

Check down King were do you people get all this information he’s only played two freaking games

put some tape on here and show me where he checked down all the time there is none watch Friday night and see how much he checks down text you people are so used to Al Davis that you think if you’re not thrown 60 yards there checking down

Gannon with a check down expert is throw that slant to Jerry Rice short passes aren’t check down it is balance

  • RAIDERMAN99

Key for DMAC is hitting a hole quickly and exploding through it.

Once in second level DMAC has terrific stiff arm and will punish DBs by getting low and launching himself like a missile.

DMAC’s top end speed is vastly exaggerated. Not much swerve. Not extremely elusive.

Asking DMAC to run east-west zbs stretch is like asking DAVE KINGMAN to cut down on his swing and be a contact hitter.

    B@uce,

You are high on David Bass, I thought you would have broken him down a little better., I want to read your analysis.
    **********************

    Everyone’s a critic lol

I am very high on David Bass because we have lacked a RDE threat this entire century

In Bass I see a guy with a very good first step and athleticism to be a real threat on the edge. They have him listed at 255 but we know teams lie about numbers. Surely to be an every down RDE or even LDE he will need to beef up some. At times I saw he show good shoulder dip moves to beat his man. Others he would get too high and not use his hands well thus having him stonewalled.

I wish we would have seen him drop back in coverage since we are to be a multiple front defense this season. Didn’t understand why so many times he was at LDE during the 11 on 11 drills. I dont think he is a strong enough guy to play against the RT and TE. Double teams he will get wiped out. to his credit he had his name called out enough for doing a good job vs the run.

For him its about consistency. Recognizing and diagnosing run plays. I’d like to see him develop a spin move as he has the footwork and athleticism to have that in his arsenal. Seems to have good arm length to where he will do like he did in college as far as batting down passes

I truly believe he will get some significant snaps and eventually take over Andre Carter as the situational 3rd down pass rusher this season. Upside is too high and he is real young. You can see the Raiders staff wants him on the team

Exactly. Folks in here are excited and making generalizations.

Many of us were just making the point that Soup was no savior. Hue worked wonders with him and he had a team playing well around him. He didn’t wow anyone or put the team on his shoulders so just stop it. He was excellent at basically not fugging it all up.

Besides, not every Soup realist is a Flynn fanatic. I for one am a proud member of the Pryor Brigade.

    ==================================

Good grief. Nobody here “hates” DMac (although I freely admit to irritation with his Freeman McNeil act). The fact is that DMac does not run the ZBS well. The ZBS requires that the runner run EXACTLY as the play calls for. That was DMac’s problem. He’d see a three-yard hole open, think “I can do better than that,” and bounce around looking for something better. That will get you killed in zone-blocking. OTOH, Goodson, Stewart and Reece would see the three-yard hole, take it, and hope to make it up on the next play.

And yes, I’m completely aware of both Knapp’s unimaginative playcalling and Frank Pollack’s horrid, horrid, o-line coaching. The fact that the two banded together to drive Classic Wiz out of coaching only makes it that much worse.
