More Sunday notes, quotes

There are so many times it’s tough to keep up, but here is the list of 20 players who were held out of practice Sunday, either because of injury or to get a rest:

Defensive linemen (7): NT Johnny Jones, DL Brandon Bair, DT Myles Wade, DT Pat Sims, DT Stacy McGee, DT Vance Walker, DE Lamarr Houston.

Linebackers (4): Sio Moore, Miles Burris, Billy Boyko, Kaluka Maiava.

Defensive backs (2): CB Mike Jenkins, CB Tracy Porter.

Offensive players (7): WR Connor Vernon, RB Latavius Murray, RG Mike Brisiel, C-G Alex Parsons, OT Menelik Watson, WR-RS Josh Cribbs, G Lucas Nix.

– Brisiel’s absence gave Allen a chance to get a look at Khalif Barnes at guard. Barnes, whose starts have all been at tackle, last remembers playing inside “three or four” years ago against the San Diego Chargers after two players went down due to injury.

“It’s cool. Things happen a little faster. I haven’t done it in a few years, but I’ve just got to get the footwork down and notice that things happen a little quicker inside as opposed to the edge,” Barnes said. “The more you can do the better it is. You just make yourself more valuable. I’m just trying to come in and do what they ask me to do.”

Said Allen: “He’s a big guy that’s got some power, so I think that’s something we want to look at. Him moving inside some, and kind of mix and match the lineups a little bit and see what we got. That was something that we had kind of planned on doing throughout camp and we took the opportunity to day with Brisiel being down to put him in there and see what he can do.”

With consistency being preached from Day 1 of training camp, Allen was asked which players have been the most consistent. Although he as reluctant to give names, Allen did anyway, naming SS Tyvon Branch, DE Jason Hunter, MLB Nick Roach, Barnes, C Stefen Wisniewski and RB Darren McFadden.

Given a little more time, the guess here is Allen would have also named FS Charles Woodson, WR Rod Streater and LT Jared Veldheer.

– Interesting that the two Raiders who have played the most games _ Woodson and DE Andre Carter _ have not missed a practice.

– Watson, who along with Sims and Burris has not practiced through the first nine sessions of camp, will have a difficult time mounting a challenge for the right tackle position considering his college experience at Florida State is just 13 games.

“He’s way behind. He went through the offseason program, but here we are in the second week of camp and he hasn’t seen a down yet,” Allen said. “He’s got to get healthy and got to get back out here. It’s frustrating to me, but it’s frustrating for him too.”

    We don’t know what we have in Flynn or Pryor.

    A QB prospect in rd 4 is in no way a bad pick. You’re probably not looking to start him for 2 or 3 years.

    We only had 2 QBs on the roster, and bums like Lienart and Fitz were NOT wanted.

    You do realize the season is not over? The 1st preseason game was yesterday. It’s all opinions at this point with no facts.

    =====================================

    Exactly. So explain why Wilson was a bad pick.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    -Because he is struggling to be a 3rd string QB
    -Because an URFA is getting more reps at TC and performing better
    -Because we lack depth and talent at other positions, and we could have used the 4th round to fix these issues.

    Go look at draft history. You are always asking people who was available, who started and was drafted after the 3rd, etc? Do you know how to use google and net?

    ======================================

    If you’re criticizing Reggie for drafting a QB or OL when some supposedly great player was on the board, then you need to specifically state who that player was and why then would have been better than who was taken. Otherwise, your opprobrium has no basis in fact.
    ————————————–

    isnt any DL drafted in the 4th round a better chance to help the DL than drafting a QB after you trade for Matt Flynn? Why have to give a name?

    I for one would like to see Prior be productive and to warrant the draft pick we used to get him. But, for sure, this will be the “tell-all” year. It’s now or never!

    Question: If it’s never as an NFL quarterback, then will
    he be willing to do what’s best for the team, like T. Jones, and try converting into a “tight end” where he would have “size and speed” to his advantage?

    You never tank, it creates a losers mentality.

    You try to win every game.

    Look at the Colts. They had the #1 pick sewed up for Luck, then inexplicably won 2 of their 3 last games and almost ended up with the #2 pick.

    They carried that momentum into the next season, and made the playoffs.
    =========================================
    The purist in me says you never tank.

    The realist in me says there can be times when you’d be an idiot NOT to tank.

    If there’s a once in a generation QB sitting at the top of the draft – and winning a meaningless game means you’re not getting that QB – then I want my team to lose the meaningless game, and win the once in a lifetime QB.

    That’s why there are ping-pong balls at the NBA lottery.

    Not sure I fully buy into the ‘momentum’ factor from one NFL season to another, either.

    I don’t discount it entirely, but I think way too much is made of it.

    I wonder how much ‘momentum’ the Colts would have had if they won their last 3 or 4 games in 2011 and weren’t able to draft Luck or RGIII in 2012.

    In football, as in life, sometimes it is better to lose a battle if it helps you win the war.

    **FTY and do it again tomorrow, just to be sure.**
