Watson, Sims return but can’t finish practice, plus other Wednesday training camp notes

Offensive tackle Menelik Watson and defensive tackle Pat Sims made it to the practice field Wednesday for the first time during training camp, but neither was around for the finish.

Watson, the second-round draft pick out of Florida State, made about 30 minutes before walking off with trainer Rod Martin after being re-injured in a position drill. He punched a bench in frustration while heading to the weight area then later found a seat outside the field house, his head down, looking at the ground.

Sims practiced for about 90 minutes before being led off, limping off the field.

After practice ended, Watson stopped for a moment to talk with reporters, his left lower leg in a compression sleeve for what he said was a calf injury.

“This is not the way I planned my first training camp,’’ Watson said. “I’ve not even took a snap yet. After making good strides in the spring, I wanted to get out there and get on the field.’’

Watson’s chances of being a rookie starter are getting more remote with every missed practice.

“He’s a guy that we’re counting on,’’ Allen said. “He’s a second round draft choice. He’s got a lot of talent, a lot of potential, but he’s got to be able to be out here. I think he’s as frustrated as any of us too, so it’s not from a lack of effort. But again, we’ll see. I’ll get with Rod and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Sims started practice wearing a wrap around his right thigh just above his knee. He felt good enough to remove it at one point, then shortly afterward was led off the field with a trainer.

Allen wouldn’t rule out Watson or Sims for Friday night’s game against Dallas, although it appears unlikely either would play. The same goes for wide receiver Jacoby Ford, who did not complete practice with an undisclosed injury.

– It probably won’t happen against Dallas, but Allen said the Raiders will have someone other than Jon Condo as the long-snapper at some point. The Raiders lost last year’s season opener after Condo was lost to a concussion, an unprepared Travis Goethel was forced into action, and poor snaps led to a blocked punt and another which Shane Lechler couldn’t get off

Stefen Wisniewski has done some long-snapping, and the Raiders are also working with special teams ace Josh Cribbs.

“At some point in the preseason we’re going to have someone other than Jon Condo snap in a live game situation,’’ Allen said.

– The following players have been ruled out of the Dallas game _ linebacker Miles Burris, linebacker D.J. Hayden, linebacker Kaluka Maiava, defensive end Lamarr Houston, linebacker Billy Boyko and defensive lineman Brandon Bair.

Defensive tackle Vance Walker missed practice on paternity leave and is questionable to face Dallas.

– Players that returned to practice included cornerbacks Tracy Porter and M ike Jenkins, running back Latavius Murray and wide receiver Connor Vernon, all of whom are expected to be available to face Dallas.

– Starters would play about a quarter against Dallas, Allen said, and that includes key veterans such as running back Darren McFadden and free safety Charles Woodson.

“I’ve seen it where guys don’t play in the preseason and I’ve seen it where guys do,’’ Allen said. “It’s my feeling that guys need to play.

– All four quarterbacks _ Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor, Matt McGloin and Tyler Wilson, will play, Allen said.

When assessing McGloin’s current spot at No. 3 on the depth chart ahead of Wilson, Allen said, “I’ve seen a smart composed guy that throws the ball accurately, makes good decisions, goes to the right place with the ball, he understands protections. And really that’s where he’s kind of separated himself from Tyler although Tyler’s been a lot better as he’s had a chance to sit back and watch a little bit more.’’

    And in pryors case, trip.

  • JLofty

In 2011 Russell Wilson was at Wisconsin or wherever the young man went to school.
In 2011 Tyrell Pryor was still getting kicked out of Ohio wasn’t he? Can’t remember the supp draft date but i don’t recall him being a big part of the mix two yrs ago…

  • SnBG

Pryor don’t trip or down the depth chart you will slip.

I am not going to analyze preseason stats EXCLUSIVELY from the 2nd half.

What a ridiculous waste of time.

Maybe we can dust off some Lou Rankin highlights for good measure.

I wonder how many series TP will get and how much he plays in the 2nd half.

    ==================

I think Pryor steps in after about 3 maybe 4 drives, then plays through the 3rd……McGloin get’s Most of the 4th, and Wilson gets the last couple minutes…

I think TP get the most playing time honestly.

  • Just Fire Baby

Pryor arrived the week before camp the season started and got his playbook and what not and some practice, although not much.

Once the season started he had to miss the suspended weeks of team practices, but could show up to the facility and work with staff after hours.

So it wasn’t a full year, like a 2/3rd year or maybe 1/2.

Basically the same as someone who got hurt in preseason and missed the games and practice for 2 months.

  • Just Fire Baby

I think TP get the most playing time honestly.

    He should.

I say 2nd quarter and 1 to 2 drives into the 3rd quarter.

i knew that posting pryors numbers form last preseason next to wilson and kaps would send a few guys desperately spinning.

Its almost like the are coming apart at the seams trying to find excuses to dismiss the numbers.

However the numbers do strongly suggest that the wave of the future must make room for pryor as he was right on par with two guys that started 2nd string and endued up starting and making deep runs in the post season largely based on their unique talents.

start pryor and the raiders are the surprise story of 2013

start flynn and prepare to buy more tarps

the difference between pryor and bo is bo is an rb and would power through guys like the boz, pryor wont do that but he is just as fast, has a great stiff arm and can make you miss and look pitiful, just like bo.

Bo was a threat to score on any play he had the ball in his hands. pryor has that kind of ability, he can score from any where on the filed throwing or running or both.

He is that kind of talent and we have n ot had that since bo wrecked his hip in the playoffs.

pryor has long way to go before he can be placed on bo’s level , but the potential & talent are there so is the hunger

    @@@@@@@

The difference between Pryor and Bo is about a thousand things. But mostly that Bo had an injury shortened HOF career and was perhaps the greates athlete in the history of sports. Pryor? Not so much.

We will know soon enough.. Preseason will be vanilla forsure. but u can get a grasp how the O will be set up
    =======================================

For you Pryor fans, Olsen is encouraging Pryor to play “his” game. Wants him to take off and run, not stand and go thru progressions. Interesting. This is what the Pryor brigade was hoping for. It will interesting if “street ball” takes Dennis Allen down with him.

  • the famous dr robert

Flynn is not established so I can’t see giving him short shrift.

I think he plays 1.5 quarters. Same with Pryor.

I’d like to see Pryor get some reps with the first team, if not tomorrow then certainly next game.

I am not down with the “safe” approach that DA and perhaps Reggie seem to favor.

I admit I don’t know a lot about Matt Flynn maybe he’s really good. But Pryor just seems to have SO much upside I’m inclined to let him play and see how it shakes out…

  • the famous dr robert

Seymour–give Olson credit for realizing Pryor won’t make it in a traditional offense.

Might as well turn him loose and experiment. See if it works.

  • the famous dr robert

The problem is, unlike some fans here who are pulling for Pryor, and see it from that angle, the staff is set on Flynn and needs to get him running for the season.

If u do simple “moneyball” numbers crunching, using yards per pass play and the like, u realize Pryor has to run for about 1000 yards to make up for his substantially lower pass completion percentage.

Every time Pryor takes off, those yards count as a pass play.

Add those yards to his actual “pazzing” yards and them compare to what Flynn would have on passing downs.

Designed run plays don’t count, as they simply take away carries from other backs.

  • SnBG

Flynn does have the advantage right now over Pryor because teams throw short to intermediate 90 percent of the time. Pryor to succeed must show he can do the short to mid stuff consistently. Even Peyton and Brady fall into that 90% category.

  • the famous dr robert

Another semi popular notion getting play here is that Pryor is “a threat to take it to the house on every play”.

    Yes that’s true. He’s a fantastic runner.

But how many of those do u think we would actually see in a season?

Do those handful of “big plays” make up for his lack of consistency passing?

    It’s a recipe for a sputtering offense.

This why coaches love consistent accurate qbs. Move the ball.

    As far as DA’s comments?

Anyone ever consider he just blurts out things, trying to be politically correct, and not having a firm grasp on what to say to reporters?

Not that it’s a bad idea, mind you.

Better to be generic than pull a Hue, and say something that comes back to bite ya, I suppose.
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
Maybe but I think he knows exactly what to say to the press. If you say anything slightly controversial to those Rat Bastard press guys they will blow it way out of proportion along with the haters on this blog.
    =========
Not just knowing what to say, but more importantly, as you stated, what not to say.

Read how the NFL has a rookie class at the beginning of each year, where they detail what not to say, and what won’t be twisted by the press.

And every year they get to point at a player from the previous year, like what Culliver did during SB week, as an example how your big mouth can cost you.

pryor can score form anywhere on the field with his arm or feet. he can burn you with a 60 yard bomb, he can hit a short pass and let the wr do the work or he can run it 60 yards

pryors cmp% at 59.4 is only 4.1 lower than Wilson 63.5 was in preseason last year, not a huge disparity

pryors ypa 7.6 wilson ypa 8.5 again not a big difference

pryor preseason compares and matches up well with russels and wilson had double the attempts

There is one intriguing idea at work that missdick has a point about. (!)

In basketball, traditionally it was structured, pass-oriented “get a high percentage shot” play.

Inner city black kids played “unstructured playground” ball.

But like jazz, they broke the rules but changed the rules.

When white coaches saw that those kids could do thing previously vilified, like “hog the ball” and drive to the hoop, they started incorporating it.

So guys like Jordan and Bryant and iverson were allowed to shine.

HOWEVER, there were LOTS of undisciplined players who thought they could “be like mike” but failed.

Jordan and Bryant learned how to take the past and incorporate their game into it via the teachings of Phil Jackson, an old school guy that was open to new ideas.

That being said, many people feel that late ’70′s and ’80′s basketball was the best, as it still had highly disciplined design and play.

So, that idea is the one thing I’m curious about.

But I see players like griffin, newton, kaepernick, and Wilson as being able to take the game to new places. I don’t think Pryor can pass well enuff to join their ranks.
