Watson, Sims return but can’t finish practice, plus other Wednesday training camp notes

Offensive tackle Menelik Watson and defensive tackle Pat Sims made it to the practice field Wednesday for the first time during training camp, but neither was around for the finish.

Watson, the second-round draft pick out of Florida State, made about 30 minutes before walking off with trainer Rod Martin after being re-injured in a position drill. He punched a bench in frustration while heading to the weight area then later found a seat outside the field house, his head down, looking at the ground.

Sims practiced for about 90 minutes before being led off, limping off the field.

After practice ended, Watson stopped for a moment to talk with reporters, his left lower leg in a compression sleeve for what he said was a calf injury.

“This is not the way I planned my first training camp,’’ Watson said. “I’ve not even took a snap yet. After making good strides in the spring, I wanted to get out there and get on the field.’’

Watson’s chances of being a rookie starter are getting more remote with every missed practice.

“He’s a guy that we’re counting on,’’ Allen said. “He’s a second round draft choice. He’s got a lot of talent, a lot of potential, but he’s got to be able to be out here. I think he’s as frustrated as any of us too, so it’s not from a lack of effort. But again, we’ll see. I’ll get with Rod and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Sims started practice wearing a wrap around his right thigh just above his knee. He felt good enough to remove it at one point, then shortly afterward was led off the field with a trainer.

Allen wouldn’t rule out Watson or Sims for Friday night’s game against Dallas, although it appears unlikely either would play. The same goes for wide receiver Jacoby Ford, who did not complete practice with an undisclosed injury.

– It probably won’t happen against Dallas, but Allen said the Raiders will have someone other than Jon Condo as the long-snapper at some point. The Raiders lost last year’s season opener after Condo was lost to a concussion, an unprepared Travis Goethel was forced into action, and poor snaps led to a blocked punt and another which Shane Lechler couldn’t get off

Stefen Wisniewski has done some long-snapping, and the Raiders are also working with special teams ace Josh Cribbs.

“At some point in the preseason we’re going to have someone other than Jon Condo snap in a live game situation,’’ Allen said.

– The following players have been ruled out of the Dallas game _ linebacker Miles Burris, linebacker D.J. Hayden, linebacker Kaluka Maiava, defensive end Lamarr Houston, linebacker Billy Boyko and defensive lineman Brandon Bair.

Defensive tackle Vance Walker missed practice on paternity leave and is questionable to face Dallas.

– Players that returned to practice included cornerbacks Tracy Porter and M ike Jenkins, running back Latavius Murray and wide receiver Connor Vernon, all of whom are expected to be available to face Dallas.

– Starters would play about a quarter against Dallas, Allen said, and that includes key veterans such as running back Darren McFadden and free safety Charles Woodson.

“I’ve seen it where guys don’t play in the preseason and I’ve seen it where guys do,’’ Allen said. “It’s my feeling that guys need to play.

– All four quarterbacks _ Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor, Matt McGloin and Tyler Wilson, will play, Allen said.

When assessing McGloin’s current spot at No. 3 on the depth chart ahead of Wilson, Allen said, “I’ve seen a smart composed guy that throws the ball accurately, makes good decisions, goes to the right place with the ball, he understands protections. And really that’s where he’s kind of separated himself from Tyler although Tyler’s been a lot better as he’s had a chance to sit back and watch a little bit more.’’

DA inspires no confidence in his ability as a coach, leader of men and/or the ability to properly evaluate talent. The guy is a clueless, pencil-necked geek who has no business being a head coach in the NFL. Spots McKenzie should be fired for hiring that clown. DA is a guy with no track record of success, who stumbled into a fool (spots), who was dumb enough to give him a 4 years 16 million dollar contract. If not for the money owed to him I’m sure Davis would have ordered spots to fire that scrub. Hue Jax re-established the brand and had the stadium sold out. Mark Davis now see’s a disaster coming so he reduced capacity. He knows the coach and the team will blow. TP is the only guy who can bring excitement back to the team and promote fan interest.

Pryor is one if the best runners Ive ever seen.

Everyone seems to be in slow motion but him.

He looks like a 15-year old playing “all-time qb” with the 12-year old at the playground.

    I like that. A lot.

But his passing. Or pazzing. Is woeful.

It was nice talking football for once before the “gossip girls” showed up again.

Constantly taunting and trying to be seen. Meanwhile saying others are ruining the board.

Even missdick isn’t on the attack.

    Just “the girls”.

guys im eager to see in tonights action

freeman, which freeman shows up this year, he has continued what he did in college, looked great at times looked mediocre at others accuracy is streaky

b weeden, has he progressed or is he weinke 2? jc im sure will look like a solid pro and may take this job if weeden starts the reg season slowly. weeden is not a qb drafted by the current regime, but jc was specifically targetd by norv truner and chud. Weeden needs a good start this year or he is toast

dominique davis in atl he was in a high powered offense at ecu 2 years ago, and will never start ahed of ryan, but he put some good tape together and play himself nto a chance to play fopr another team in the future.

Jake locker i dont think he will improve much and his accuracy leave more than a little to be desired.

Interestingly about locker he only completed 51% of his passes last preseason yet did get starts while our own pryor had a better preseason and only got the start when davis jr forced it.

    hmmmm

of course wilson and kap will see very few snaps tonight

Funny hearing the hosts on 95.7 talk about Hue trying to steal as much camera time as he can on HBO’s Hard Knocks.
Said defense coor was more than mildly annoyed when Hue kept wandering over to the defense to grab camera time.

So hard to get a fair analysis.
So many players on most teams aren’t even suiting up.
    Makeshift olines.
    Patched up defense’s.
QB’s favorite targets not even suiting up in many cases.
A glorified scrimmage is what preseason has progressed to.
Or regressed, as the case may be.

51 yds comes to mind, but wouldn’t bet a lot on it.

Suppose I could have googled it to appear knowledgeable.

    Naw. guessing 51

your best look at a player besides regular season is pre season.

Like allen said it means far more than ota mini or training camp

make it count when the lights come on.

if one guy is effecient between the 20′s but only leads to field goals, and the other guy isnt as sharp but scores td’s who do you think davis jr will want in the game?

davis needs tds, he needs a good product to attract investors for a stadium.

Flynn will be a bigger snooze fest than palmer was

at least palmer could get the ball in the endzone in between all the bone headed mistakes

Seymour–give Olson credit for realizing Pryor won’t make it in a traditional offense.

Might as well turn him loose and experiment. See if it works.
    ============================================

I think you are 100% correct about that. It is most likely that Pryor does his best work in practice when things break down. Olsen is encouraging Pryor to use his athleticism. All of that is well and good, but when defensive coordinators start accumulating data, it’s these kinds of players that do not have long careers.

I’m in the “preseason matters club” in the sense for the past two seasons what u saw is what we got in reg season. Can’t stop the run, special teams kick and punt coverage, receivers not catching balls…breakdowns.

Final score matters not but performance does imo.
    —————————————————-

I am in the same boat, never really used to give a hoot about pre-season but you are right. Watching pre-season last year and thinking the regular season was going to be different was one the most MYOPIC moments of my Raiderfandom.

I’m the loser but ur my new biggest fan.

    LMFAO.
Did I mention you by name?
How is it you knew immediately who the loser was?

In this same thread three other posters tossed out generic insults, of varying natures, and you immediately claimed the insults, knowing you were the loser being mentioned.

    Does that tell you anything?
Yes, seriously, laughing my fing ass off at how easy you are to play.
    *********
Dude. Find someone else to be enamored with.

It’s easy to know who ur talking about. U haven’t stopped for days.

If that makes u laugh that hard, u must be retarded.

Why don’t u fvck off already?

Do u think ur bothering me? Is that ur new life’s goal?

If u wanna be famous like me, come up with something clever to say instead of trying to make urself known thru me.

i see that haters are really spreading lots of bs

pryor has been sharp according to all accounts and has even been the best qb on the field according o a few.

We have read sevearl accounts of pryor completing passes and nearly nothing about his running.

In fact we hear the oc saying pryor should use his legs when its open for him to do so

so this doesnt add up to the notion “pryor does his best work when plays break down” in fact it shows the exact opposite.

pryor is mainly executing je offense as it is called from the pocket

these dudes are really getting antsy this preseason willl destroy the haters

    JLofty,

We discussed quite a bit about Sio Moore who is slated to be our SAM backer. Also B@uce in his alalysis commented about Roach and Burnett. Burnett will be our WILL backer and has very good speed, and that should help with our coverage on these hybrid tightends. Roach was calling out the defense, wasn’t anything I saw to tell me we have a problem, very solid.

No hating at all. I watched practice with my own eyes. Was there. Watched it. Greg Olsen confirmed it. Pryor has been inconsistent. That is not debatable. He is also waaaay improved from last year. That is not debatable either.

    Naw. guessing 51
    =====================================================

160′. I always thought it was 50 yds.

  • Raider Dell

    Seymour,

Your darn right, Pryor will have inconsistent moments as he was virtually non exsistent last year with that coaching staff.

The more reps the less mistakes and he will get better. We lost a full season as the staff of coaches groomed the top two QB’S and he had no teacher, other then Carson Palmer. Pryor said as much, as he hung on to every word and watched film and picked his brain, my hope is he picked the good parts, not the bad one’s.

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

Dell, I was joking earlier about a ‘Gaurd elegible’ play for Barnes if he moves over.
    But I found this:

A forward pass may be touched or caught by any eligible receiver. All members of the defensive team are eligible. Eligible receivers on the offensive team are players on either end of line (other than center, guard, or tackle) or players at least one yard behind the line at the snap. A T-formation quarterback is not eligible to receive a forward pass during a play from scrimmage.

    http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/forwardpass

Might be as simple as lining up 1 yard back. Don’t see a caveat. Have to declare depending on number.

Someone at SnBPride thought the guard had to line up on the line but I couldn’t find that rule.

    What am I missing?

Hopefully Palmer taught him to throw the inevitable Int.s at opportune times, because one of the main criticisms of Palmer was throwing them at the most inopportune times.
