Rookie Butler doesn’t want to go Rambo on Raiders

NAPA – If wide receiver Brice Butler doesn’t know about Ken-Yon Rambo, it’s worth his time and effort to find out in the coming days so that he can avoid the kind of pitfall that derailed Rambo’s once-promising Raiders career.
Like Butler, Rambo joined the Raiders as a seventh-round draft pick on a team with plenty of receiver depth. Butler also followed the trail blazed by Rambo by turning a late-game catch into a pivotal touchdown in his Raiders debut Friday night.
The key now is for Butler to build upon his fast start and not flame out the way Rambo did in 2001. The Raiders released Rambo at the end of training camp. Butler still has plenty of time to bolster his stock.
“He’s been a nice surprise,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said of Butler.
Yet, what he has done so far is little more than a nice start in the overall scheme of things. It’s imperative Butler not get complacent and make too much of his showing against the Dallas Cowboys, when Butler led all receivers with 70 yards on his two receptions.
“We’ll make sure we keep our thumb on him, make sure he doesn’t read too much of the good stuff (reporters are) going to write about him,” Allen said.
Butler arrived from San Diego State via Southern Cal, the ninth of 10 players selected by the Raiders in the NFL draft in April.
He joined a crowded field of hopefuls that included undrafted rookies Greg Jenkins, Conner Vernon and Sam McGuffie and inexperienced players such as Travionte Session, Isaiah Williams and Juron Criner.
Making the leap from prospect to the opening-game, 53-man roster entails standing out during practice and games.
Denarius Moore did just that in 2011 and went from fifth-round draft pick to starting receiver. Rod Streater followed suit in 2012 in going from undrafted rookie to opening-day starter.
Now it’s Butler who is surging to the head of the class and making a push for not only a roster spot but meaningful playing time.
Streater said he and Butler bonded instantly because of their similar backgrounds, as well as their college stats.
Players in their situation have to be almost “perfect” to overcome the long odds, Streater added. They also have to put behind them stellar plays, solid practices and good games.
“You got to move on,” Streater said. “The coaches want to see improvement every game and the next game is the most important. You can’t live off the past.”
That already seems ingrained in Butler, who tired of all the praise from friends and family after the Cowboys game.
“I honestly don’t think I played that good,” Butler said. “Until those couple of plays on that one drive, I didn’t feel good about my play at all. I definitely have to work on it. Watching tape, there was a lot of stuff I can work on.”
Butler transferred to San Diego State after his junior season at Southern Cal when playing time dwindled. That experience prepared him for the tenuous existence of an NFL player.
“I can’t focus on what the coaches are thinking or what the other players are doing,” Butler said. “I’ve done that in the past, and it didn’t really go well for me. So, I’m really just focusing on what … I can do best for the team.”
Having a father that played in the NFL for 12 seasons gives Butler an edge in that he has someone to speak with about the process.
Bobby Butler played cornerback for the Atlanta Falcons from 1981-92. Brice said his father passes along tips on what to look for from cornerbacks and how to gain an advantage.

– Cornerback Taiwan Jones and linebacker Sio Moore suffered undisclosed injuries, and they weren’t able to finish practice.
They were among 16 players that missed some or all of practice. Allen said he is hopeful of getting back some players soon.

– Andre Gurode worked at right guard and Tony Bergstrom at left guard with the first-team offense.
Gurode and Bergstrom got all the reps because Mike Brisiel and Lucas Nix didn’t practice and weren’t able to compete for job openings.
Allen said it’s crucial for the Raiders to find five reliable offensive linemen as soon as possible, but it’s more important to make the proper decisions before the regular-season opener.

– The Raiders had a lengthy practice today on what passed for, perhaps, the hottest day of camp. Good thing for the players, the practice was without full pads.

– Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor received all but three reps in the longest session of the day. Matt McGloin came on for two reps — one was a hand-off — and Matt Wilson mopped up with one rep. He made a nice throw to Greg Jenkins on his lone snap.
Afterward, Allen said Wilson needs more work on his command of the playbook and execution. Until then, it appears as if undrafted rookie McGloin is going to get more reps than Wilson, a fourth-round draft pick.

– Strong safety Tyvon Branch made the defensive play of the day when he ran stride for stride with tight end David Ausberry and hauled in a tipped pass from Wilson for an interception in the end zone.
On offense, Andre Holmes gets the nod for going up over two defenders and snaring a pass from Flynn for a touchdown. Later in practice, Holmes came close to making an even better grab on a deep throw from Pryor. Credit Chimdi Chekwa with the pass breakup.

the raiders have no hope of staying with RGIII and there ridiculously difficult to contain hybrid offense.

morris and griffin will simply work over our d line and secondary like they did most of their opponents last year.

with no pass rush to speak of there isnt a player on our defense that has an answer for the awe inspiring RGIII and his out of this world talent and speed.

Flynn playing game manager simply wont be enough. Relying on dmac to pound the ball wont be enough.

This is a game where you need offense, and flynn will be far to easy to defend fro washington

The raiders will need pryor running the hybrid to have any shot of beating the redskins defending nfc east champs and playoff contender

pryor can cause big problems for the redskins whos pass rush with orakpo could kill flynn.

pryor also has the arm to test the wash secondary which is suspect to say the least.

dink and dunk from flynn makes it easy on the wash secondary, making them defend every inch of the turf with pryor puts them at a disadvantage. i dont think they can pay mistake free in the secondary for a full game.

    Many of u don’t.

U would think that would be obvious but to some it isn’t.

Pitchers in baseball own their won loss cuz they do have total control over the outcome of the game.

If they strike out everybody they face they will eventually win the game. I’m just saying that in theory.

A qb has to hand over the ball to the defense and special teams and has no control whatsoever of his defense stopping the opponent.

Romo HAS made some critical errors in those games so he can rightfully be criticized for that part, but it is a team game.

A qb can’t win with a crap team.

Morning guys, I imagine the QB debate dominated the blog since friday, I read a few comments knowing pretty much what people would say, so I will just throw my 2 cents at it.

First of all, the most important thing to come out of the game for me was the Coaching.

I was never sold on DA, still think he did a terrible job as a rookie, except for keeping penalties under control, just wanted to acknowledge that I have been a big critic.

That being said, after friday’s games I can honestly say I was impressed, the team looked prepared, motivated and well coached, it was pre-season but you have to start somewhere.

Kudos to DA and his staff, Greg Olson, I questioned his hiring as well, but it appears he’s doing just what he said he would, putting players in a position to make plays and he looks like a guy with much more balls than Knapp, keep it up GO.

So congratulations to DA, Olson, Bobby April who is living up to his reputation as one of the best ST coaches around and everyone else on the Staff.

It looks like the Coaching is going to be much improved and that was the first battle of 2013.

Now the QB’s, we’ve heard all angles, I’m not going to get into the performance details.

Truth is, as most reasonable fans expected, Flynn didn’t do anything to hurt himself, right now he has a better grasp of the position and it shows, he didn’t wow or dissapoint anyone, but is that enough for us to commit ourselves to this guy?.

Because on the other hand you have a guy who brings so much energy, passion, athleticism and options into the game that it just feels like a different team when he’s the QB, some guys have that kind of personality, aura, I don’t really know how to call it but man TP6 has it.

Flynn looks like a cog in the engine, maybe the key cog but still a guy who needs everyone around him to play at their best to generate a quality Offense, in other words, he’s not a playmaker, not a guy opposing Defensive Coordinators will fear and simply does not appear to bring much to the table, yes he can execute the Offense and manage the game better than Pryor right now, 1 or 2 wins this year?.

Pryor is the opposite, a playmaker with so much talent that the Coaches have to remind him not to try and turn every play into a big one because he CAN, players seem to respond to him, the crowd loves him and he’s so humble and works so hard that he has earned the respect of most of his critics in here, except for the irrational ones.

Bottom line: Pryor may lose a couple of games for us because of his inexperience but he may win us a few as well because of his talent, Flynn probably won’t cost us games but won’t take over and win us any either.

So what’s best for the future of the Raiders?.

Do we unleash Pryor and let him take his lumps and risk a setback or do we go with Flynn and wonder how much dynamic the Offense would be if he wasn’t sitting on the bench?.

At this point, we don’t have to make the decision yet, we still have 2 “meaningful” pre-season games to gauge the situation,

    ———

Solid. You get it. something most media writers dont

Raiders writer Asher Matthews had a long discourse on Twitter the other day about why he thinks Flynn will start.

Basically, he views Flynn as the reliable choice who will get an average team between 6 and 10 wins.

Pryor is the riskier choice, and could give an average team between 4 and 12 wins.

Here’s the rub: 4 wins might get DA fired. 6 will get him another year. Therefore, he’s more likely to go with the safer choice.

When I was a kid, I would have told u stabler was better than fours of Bradshaw or staubach.
    ————————
Glad to here it, did you know that Staubach QB rating was higher than Stabler’s? That shows how stupid it is to base everything off QB ratings
    *******
    That was my point.

    I loved stabler.

But fouts, staubach, and Bradshaw were better.

I know that now cuz I know the game better than a kid.

Minny cut him because of his outspoken nature.

Have you ever been there? Pretty conservative.

Asher has a huge bias. Does not like Pryor.

Sapp and Irvin are Haters but they are right when they said nobody wanted flynn but the Raiders .. now McGloin has made Flynn expendable.

Pryor is the best qb.. followed by McGloin, flynn and Tyler wilson

Wow, So Reggie is such an idiot he traded for a quaterback no one wanted? Reggie cannot evaluate talent?

Pryor looks like he can very easily take the starting job, but I hate to see all the Flynn bashing…I thought both Qbs played well. Pryour was very exciting to watch.

Kluwe also stated in that article he’s already thinking about life after football and his other interests. Is that not a red flag?

Uhhhh no. No it isn’t at all. One of the first thing they teach at the rookie symposium is to always be prepared for life after football.

For the record, on the new mmqb site that article was featured on, they have different NFL players writing articles almost daily. I didn’t see any outrage when Charles Woodson had an article on there a few weeks back.

We get that you don’t like the punter not named King, because of his open support of gay rights, but it seems you are trying to manufacture reasons to dislike him.

Here’s the facts. Game 1 he was out punted, what else matters? If King has gained the consistency he lacked last preseason, he will win the job. The guy not named King pretty much acknowledged that.
