Woodson gets a day of rest

And on the 13th practice, Charles Woodson rested. Woodson, who vowed to be a regular practice participant and that coaches would have to pull him off the field, did not participate for the first time.

Coach Dennis Allen said after practice Woodson was being rested.

– A strong punting day for Marquette King, who out-kicked Chris Kluwe with a 50-yard punt to 36-yarder for Kluwe against Dallas. The Raiders punted only twice in the game.

– As promised, coach Dennis Allen began to work snappers other than Jon Condo into the special teams mix. Stefen Wisniewski rolled one to King in the end zone but was otherwise solid. Josh Cribbs took a break from his job as the personal protector on the punt team to get in a long snap.

– Minimal participation for rookie fourth-round pick Tyler Wilson, who did manage to get into a team session for one play and zipped a completion to wide receiver Connor Vernon.

– The Raiders have yet to see the defensive line they expect to start play together during training camp. Still out are Pat Sims, Vance Walker and Lamarr Houston. That leaves Christo Bilikidi and rookie Stacy McGee starting inside and veteran Andre Carter on the outside along with Jason Hunter.

– Running back Latavius Murray missed his second straight practice and his chances of unseating Rashad Jennings appear slim at this point.

– With Mike Brisiel missing his second straight day at right guard, veteran Andre Gurode again played that position alongside right tackle Khalif Barnes.

Others who missed practice included guard Lucas Nix, cornerback Taiwan Jones, tackle Menelik Watson, wide receiver Jacoby Ford, linebacker Miles Burris, linebacker Keenan Clayton, defensive lineman Brandon Bair, wide receiver Juron Criner, linebacker Billy Boyko and linebacker Kaluka Maiava.

– Free safety Reggie Smith had an interception during a 7-on-7 drill when a Terrelle Pryor pass bounced off the hands of tight end Brian Leonhardt.

– Quarterback Matt Flynn continues to show a knack for getting out of trouble then hitting receivers with short throws on the run, with running backs most often his targets.

– Tight end Jeron Mastrud was getting work with the first team offense in some packages. Mastrud played in Miami when Tony Sparano was the head coach and went through training camp in Tampa with Greg Olson as offensive coordinator. Allen said Mastrud’s strength is as an in-line blocker, making him a potential complement to rookie Mychal Rivera.

Ravens add a few vets to the offense for Flacco.. Brandon Stokley & Dallas Clark (two of Peyton Manning’s favorite targets)

think this helps their chances of a #repeat ??

Greg Papa on 95.7 the game just said

    1. Greg Papa just said FLynn is ok.. he is what he is.

    2. Pryor is the wildcard.. gave him an A + for learning the new offense so quick.. he comes from a pro offense. Coaches are raving about the way he has taken to the offense.. still needs to work on the reading the DE.

PAPA said he doesnt htink it matters what the END does, he can take it or pull it and they still wont catch him ..he is gliding.

PAPA said he was only in 2nd gear while running he has showed an extra gear in practice where nobody will catch him. PAPA said he has gotten better as a qb

    3. McGloin is like flynn jr who has a better ARM and can be better in a few weeks then flynn (same thing i have been saying)

    4. Papa said you can make the argument that you can win more games with PRYOR if you just let him loose and play ball. The play to criner is a play thats unscripted.. secordary will blow a coverage and Pryor can rip it down field.

The other DJ said no question the energy picks up when PRYOR comes in the game.

PAPA said if you are gonna be a RUNNING TEAM.. then he is gonna wanna see PRYOR with DMAC, and DMOORE, REECE.. who u gonna worry about as a defense.. PRYOR or giving it to DMAC

I didn’t know that Zach Sudfeld signed with the Patriots.

Just saw him make a catch against the Eagles.

ZS is a pass catching TE from UNR that I was hoping the RAIDS would sign.

Will be a big time player if he can stay healthy.

If if’s and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a happy Christmas. But he didn’t score a TD. In fact he made a bone headed play. In the red zone. And some of you want to buy him a present. And that was the second time in two games that he did that same bone headed thing. Even the announcers said that was QB 101. Do you really think a guy who doesn’t have the basic fundamentals of the game down is going to be fine going against bona fide NFL ones who are geared to stop him?

    Yeah kinda. But not completely.

Greg Jenkins is the new cribbs.

And if cribbs gets dinged up, it could happen.

Porter will be the nickel when Hayden gets in.

And with Chekwa, Adams, Taiwan, and Casey impressing, he could get shoved out.

I’d say they are unlikely but not that unlikely.

Clay Matthews has to change to stop read-option quarterbacks

The success of read-option quarterbacks in the NFL is forcing Packers linebacker Clay Matthews to alter the way he plays.

Matthews said on ESPN that his preference is to fire off the ball and fly toward the quarterback at the snap. But after 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick employed a read-option attack to the tune of 181 rushing yards and 263 passing yards in a playoff win over the Packers, Matthews said he has had to learn a new approach.

“I like to get after it. I like to just be going for it, getting after the quarterback,” Matthews said. “With this, it’s the complete opposite. You have to sit there and play pattycake with the tackle, making sure the quarterback doesn’t escape the pocket. You have to read and make sure who’s taking the ball, who’s not. It’s difficult for me to just kind of sit back, especially when Kaepernick was having such success throwing the ball that game, too, which caught us by surprise.”

    great post kell

it isnt about coaching or schemes, this offensive concept of the mobile qb play faking or running works agaisnt the instincts of the defenders which is what makes it so potent.

the greater the athlete, the more he needs to fight instinct

the hybrid O was “figured out” a loooooong time ago, but that doesnt mean it can be stopped, and especially cant be stopped by a coach in a press box wearing glasses and earphones
