Halftime: Saints 23, Raiders 7

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, August 16th, 2013 at 6:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Drew Brees did what Drew Brees does against the Raiders in the first half.

To make matters worse, virtually every potential problem area showed up in a big way for the Raiders as they trail 23-7 at halftime at the Superdome.

Brees was 14 of 18 for 202 yards and a touchdown as New Orleans got points on every drive. Meanwhile, Matt Flynn was pressured heavily _ and sacked five times _ before directing an 82-yard end-of-half drive when the Saints backed off and played coverage. Flynn was 12 of 16 for 124 yards and an 18-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore.

The pass blocking was horrendous, and left tackle Alex Barron got worked over but good by Cameron Jordan. But he was hardly the only culprit up front. To make matters worse, David Ausberry (shoulder) and Tracy Porter (groin) both left the game with injuries.

With this oline Flynn will last 2 qtrs in the reg season.Flynn reminds me of a poor mans kevin kolb.

What you’d like to see is if you can build at least half of a solid football team, but now we’ve lost Branch for who knows how
    long.

Devilr8er..Priesttj and The rest of your PRYOR ILK

Here I was… starting to believe you guys and Join the Pryor Team…But…

Most of that team has crawled away in shame…

I don’t want to be on a Team of Shame…

DA is a lousy coach. Why did he give TP minimal playing time (1 quarter). TP should have played at least 11/2 quarters, with McGloin getting about 5-7 minutes of exposure. Flynn is total garbage, McGloin will never be nothing more than a 3rd stringer. Parsons the back-up center should be cut. Those smaller DE’s should get some run with the 1st unit.

  • Bigmike34

It did take Flynn some time to settle in …Especially with our Right Tackle Down…but… He certainly Closed out the First half with a magnificent Drive for a TD…That is what Flynn will look like this year…Against their #1 Defense.

How did Pryor do you guys….Was he really Good?…What was his longest Completion…He really is a good long Passer…Right you guys?

That was painfully ugly. Virtually no silver linings from that performance. Aus down – Porter down. To me Crawford was the only Raider that stood out. Cribbs is done IMO. I’ve been a fan for 45 years. I root for all Raiders players. This is the first year I have EVER felt like we could not compete. My expectations are very low for the forseeable future. Everyone of our offensive units were AWFUL.

Thought TP could have done a better job handling the pass rush pressure. Also concerned that Saints were able to read every screen pass TP attempted. Had to ‘ground’ every one of those attempted delays or screens.

    BUT…

Liked what I saw on his 3rd and 7 completion for a first down that was called back on a holding penalty.

Nicely timed and accurate pass with some zip.

Take away more from that play than all the rest combined.

This is about projecting what TP can be. Not what his stat line for tonight was.

489: McGloin looked as pathetic as you out there.. What are you talking about.

It took 6 series to get our 2nd first down. I think he’s still settling down. Brees tore us up. 23-0. That game was decided, but not yet over by halftime. Pryor sucked too, so did McGloin. Is anybody really Proud oh any of those performances?

  • Derek

#475: I agree Jenkins is much better than Cribbs. Cribbs is done ! Reggie Mc is nothing more than a junk collector. He took an 8-8 team and converted them to an expansion franchise talent wise.

Flynn settling in at 23-0 and the opponent playing lax/vanilla equals 2 wins at best for the season. Boring vanilla offense with a noodled armed, slow footed, QB with zero pocket presence.

  • Bigmike34

    Derek The fool

    1) Flynn was not responsible for the 23-0 lead the Saints rang up…He had No turnovers…

2)The Noodled armed guy….Had a 117 QB rating Passed for an 18 Yard TD…and had a 75 yard Completion percentage….While being Sacked 5 times…THE OFFENSE IS ALWAYS VANILLA IN PRE-SEASON…And gets more so when your 0-line is not getting it done…

    3) How did Pryor do when he went in against their Rush?…HE WAS HORRIBLE….THE REAL QUESTION IS…

Based on their performances WHO SHOULD BE OUR STARTING QB…..

  • Bigmike34

LETS MAKE THE COMPARISON EASY FOR YOU…

    Flynn Comp 12/16 (75%) …124 Yards…QB rating..117.7
    Fryer……. 1/5 (20%)……9 Yards……………39.6

Then there is FRYER the LONG PASSER THE BIG ARM…1.8 yards per Passing Attempt………….Flynn…….7.8

ALSO NOTE Pryor’s long completion was 9 yards…Flynn’s TD pass was twice as long as that.

PRYER the Great runner…4 rushes for 15 yards 3.8 per rush…

    Flynn 1 rush for 4 yards…4 yards per Rush…

PRYER WILL NEVER BE AN NFL QB……BUT

THE TEAM CAN AND SHOULD START GIVING PRYOR REPS AT WIDE RECEIVER HE HAS ALL THE TANGABLES NECESSARY GOOD HANDS SIZE AND BIG TIME SPEED…..COULD BE A SLOT BACK AS WELL….IT IS A SHAME TO WASTE HIS NATURAL TALENT BY PLAYING HIM AT THE WRONG POSITION WHERE HIS ONLY FUTURE IS THE BENCH OR THE UNEMPLOYMENT LINE.

    From Dan Hanzus NFL reporter.

Much to Flynn’s credit, he led the Raiders on an 11-play, 82-yard touchdown drive to close the second quarter, capped by a pretty 18-yard scoring strike to Denarius Moore. Flynn finished 12-of-16 passing for 124 yards and that score. Nice production, considering the circumstances.

If Flynn can stay healthy, he’s a mortal lock to be the Raiders’ Week 1 starter. Terrelle Pryor didn’t inspire confidence in three second-half series, finishing with 9 yards passing and 15 yards rushing.
