Saints start too fast for Raiders

The Raiders couldn’t get started Friday night, and the result was a 28-20 preseason loss to the New Orleans Saints before 72,112 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

With the Saints having their way at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and Drew Brees slicing up the secondary, the Saints led 23-0 before Matt Flynn led a late touchdown drive on a two-minute drill before the half.

In the third quarter, a David Bass fumble of Seneca Wallace was recovered by Ryan Robinson for a defensive touchdown and an Omar Gaither interception of a deflected pass set up a 46-yard field goal by Eddy Carmona to get the Raiders within 23-17.

In the fourth quarter, Will Herring stuffed Jamize Olawale in the end zone for a safety not long after the Raiders had stuffed the Saints on a fourth-and-1 play inside the 5-yard line. New Orleans finished the scoring with Garrett Hartley’s fourth field goal of the game, this one from 28 yards.

The Raiders, 1-1 in the preseason, headed home realizing they found out a lot more good things about players they hoped to make the team than they did about the ones that will be their starters.

When the Saints and Raiders were playing their first team, it was a mismatch from the outset.

Brees had his way with the Raiders as he has in four previous preseason and regular-season games. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 202 yards and a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills on a play in which he had several seconds to throw.

Every New Orleans possession produced points until backup Seneca Wallace came in and kneeled on the ball to end the first half. Hartrley had field goals of 53, 31 and 30 yards and Mark Ingram had a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Saints were up 23-0 before they dialed back the pressure tactics, which helped Flynn direct an 82-yard, 11-play touchdown drive that ended in an 18-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore.

Before that drive, the Raiders had only a single first down in the half, with the Saints registering five sacks of Flynn.

Flynn ended his half completing 12 of 16 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown, most of that compiled on the last drive.

Veteran Alex Barron, getting first crack at the left tackle job which will be open for the foreseeable future with Jared Veldheer out following triceps surgery, struggled trying to block former Cal star Cameron Jordan.

The second-team defense go the Raiders back in the game by forcing two turnovers, but backup quarterback Terrelle Pryor struggled during his one quarter of play. Pryor was 1 of 5 for 9 yards and ran four times for 15 yards.

Allen must be fired he is a liar & by far the worst coach on earth. That was the worst football I have ever seen. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A QB TAKE 5 SACKS IN A ROW & HAVE 10 pASSES TRAVEL LESS THAN 6 YARDS!!!!

Dmac will get killed, Reece won’t get the ball, our speed we group wil be useless. The defense will be tired by the 10 minute mark of the first quarter & we will be blown out by 49 every week.

ALLEN MUST GO!!!! Somebody call Kyle Shanhan or Darryl bevel, Kevin sumlin NOW!!!!
    ============================================

Ah, you’re just upset because Terrelle Pryor looked EXACTLY like I told you he would, and Ryan had his defense play the R/O EXACTLY the way I told you they would and they shut it down. Badly. Must suck to watch your whole world fall apart around you. But hey, on the bright side, Flynn looked good.

  • xraided

easy there guys … obviously they were trying to get the running game goin with TP in the pistol… and our dreadful OL was the cause of it’s uselessness … as it was for Flynn most of the time.

our receivers aren’t that great either

Pryor will get his opportunity in the 3rd game to show some things… hopefully with the 1′s

Gotta love how Priest and Mistic spent seven months telling us how Pryor would shock the world in training camp and show us all how great he is.

Now that his QB rating is less than 1/2 of Flynn’s, they’re screaming racism.

    Of course.

    Notable 2013 Cutdowns:

    Conner Vernon
    Juron Criner
    Mike Brisiel
    Tracy Porter
    Tyler Wilson to IR
    =========================================

Wilson is going to move up the depth chart. The game is too fast for him right now, but he has the physical tools to succeed. He just needs to take a page out of Pryor’s book and get his ass to work.

    =====

There’s only one page in Pryor’s playbook because they’ve simplified the crap out of it. Read option packages and single read passing plays are what works best for him.

The problem is that good old Robby Ryan threw his 46 defense at Pryor, showing that he has zero fear of his passing attack. The result: too much pressure that required quick decision making, and he broke down. His single reads were gone and with it his chances to make solid mechanical throws.

His best play was the bullet he whistled about 12 yards down field for a completion. The problem is that he stared that target down the entire route. Fortunately it was one of the few plays Ryan didn’t blitz and the pass play was underneath the zone, in just the right place. You can’t count on those stars lining up too often in games. You need to find second and third options routinely. Rex didn’t give him another chance after that.

Mark my words, every defense he faces from here on out in the NFL is going to emulate this sort of pressure at the expense of deep coverage until he proves that he can beat it. Corners will play of the WRs wide to take away his best throw, which is the rainbow deep down the sideline. Safeties up in the box to either neutralize read option runs or to let LBs blitz with reckless abandon while they take away his over the middle single reads.

i’d rather have Palmer all day for the $4 mill more this year.

at least Palmer, Moore and streter had a good rapport at one point

jury’s still out but we’ll see.

still say 3-13 or 4-12 again this year… unfortunate… but maybe Clowney is in our future

used the same excuse last year when we almost went 0-4 … i was like blah it’s preseason… yeeeeaaa

it’s more about the lack of play at key positions and the lack of healthy players. they’re dropping like flies and you can’t win with backups like these

  • eastoaklandraider

Priest Pryor will get his shot just like Kap got his, it may have to be through injury or just ineffectivness. If we are not winning the Nation will turn on DA and Flynn, Mark Davis will step in and make DA play Pryor. One way or the other Pryor will be the starter.

yes he was getting blasted from the first snap… i realize he had no time

but it disturbs me that even papa and plunkett’s old blind a$$es could see wide open receivers looked over by him… and then a few plays later on the play where Aus got hurt, Streater was crossing over the middle all by himself(the camera was facing flynn from the DB) and flynn checked it down to Ausberry instead(on a 3rd and long)

    didn’t like seeing that stuff

hopefully i am just being hard on him and he’s just getting used to his receivers

now he can’t trust his bootsy blind side protector either, so i’m sure he’ll miss out on plenty of open receivers

At WR maybe. Pryor was terrible. There is no denying this. And he is getting worse and worse, which is exactly what happened in his lone start. Time to get on the Pryor to WR bandwagon and let’s see what he can do with the ball in his hands in space.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

Doesn’t matter about Pryor he can’t be judged on 5 pass attempts with only one of those being an actual drop back in the pocket. The 4 other attempts were in a collapsed pocket with defenders hanging all over him.

My point is Allen tried to feature Flynn & eliminate any competition by failing to give Pryor a chance to play. 3 drives in the first game 3 drives in this game, just like last preseason only it was lienart.

Even if you think Flynn is better could you really be happy a out that putrid showing for the first 28 minutes of that half?!? That was bed & breakfast bad.

Allen is a liar , & his agenda has created a putrid unwatchable product that isn’t worth watching.

I think Flynn will flip & be benched or hurt because he can’t get the line protections right & gets blown up 5 drop backs in a row.

Allen will be canned when he goes 0-6 in a rich kotite tailspin while force feeding Flynn to the raider fans.

Please get is a real coach, he should have been fired for how he handled Pryor lady year & it continues this year.

FIRE IS AZZ NOW!!!! Worst coach ever worse than bugel white kiffin or any other scrub

What are the updates on a new stadium approval in oakland?

  • Crawfish Joe

Hope DA is taking notes on stopping Denver.

  • RaiderSam

    Raiders.
QB – keep Terrelle Pryor. Begin either looking at Michael Vick in free agency, then take a LONG look at Teddy Bridgewater with the top 5 pick or Jadevon Clowney as a pass rusher (stick with Vick as a bridge to Pryor. – keep UCLA’s Brett Hundley in mind if his numbers and combine work stand out.

RB – let McFadden walk – he’s likely to be traded if the season goes south (after new Orleans game, were getting that feeling).
FA – Ben Tate, Rashard Mendenhall (or both, as Marcel Reece is definitely gone in FA next year – Ka’Deem Carey of Arizona is a multi-purpose threat as is Oregon’s DeAnthony Thomas.

WR – ugh. The miss of Calvin Johnson in draft for Russell haunts us. Kenny Britt is set for a nice pay day and he has enough baggage that could make buyers worry. Jeremy Maclin is another intriguing pick. – first round pick Marquise Lee (So.Cal) would be another.

TE – three headed monster of Mychal Rivera, Ausberry and Gordon again. – too many other holes. Maybe Ed Dickson?

OL – big decision to resign Veldheer – and so-so Eugene Monroe, Branden Albert avail. Denver would never part with Clady to a AFC West rival. I’d add Kevin Boothe and keep a resurrected Andre Gurode could help the blocking. Considerable talent drop off in this FA class.

DL – Jadevon Clowney – they looked awful v. Saints, and their looking at the no. 1 pick as Cleveland, Arizona, Buffalo all have improved and the talent level was weak. I’d be worried with signability, so a trade down might be in order. Other Fas to include; Greg Hardy, re-signing Lamarr Houston (or letting him walk, because he isn’t a sack guy and they need that desperately)
B.J. Raji might work as he was with Green Bay. Randy Starks should’ve been signed this year as Sporano coached him at Miami, and Sparano would replace Allen if Gruden balks. At returning as head coach. As for the draft; Luis Nix III or Arizona St. Will Sutton could factor in. another guy to look closely at is Dominique Easley of Florida.

LB – Kyle Van Noy, BYU in draft. He could fit as a rush end in a 3-4 switch
I’d include CJ Mosely of Bama – if Raiders have an extra pick
Sean Lee and Brian Cushing would be two seasoned vets to add to a struggling defense (and Raiders have a lot of one-year deal lbs) – keep Omar Gaither, though.

CB – DJ Hayden ..BUST? Lets just pass on this for now. C-Wood will likely be gone and lighting the torch in 2014, so lets take Michael Adams and Jenkins at the corners with nickel Joselio Hanson and get a developing guy
Brandon Browner would be a nice pick up

S – it appears Tyvon Branch is a big pay s, but not really the impact guy – Jarius Byrd is, but I don’t think a safety sees a big payday here…look for TJ Ward in FA or Chris Clemons (from Miami) – take a long look at Chance Casey in pre-season, he may be a keeper. S Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix of bama might be a good in-the-box type

Final analysis; not time to panic, plenty of free agents and cap space to re-make this team.
Jadevon Clowney, Marquise Lee, Kyle Van Noy, CJ Mosely, Teddy Bridgewater, Christian Jones (Florida St.)
free agency – Randy Starks, BJ Raji, Kevin Boothe, Michael Vick, Brandon Browner, Chris Clemons

Coaching; McKenzie stays (ugh) – Sporano on the cheap – David Shaw (with a considerable pay raise), Jack delRio (which would duplicate another defensive guy coming)

don’t worry – it gets better…a number of one year deals are on this – but they cant miss on this draft, and they’ll move on from Dennis Allen if there’s another double-digit loss season – look for Gruden, Sporano, Stanford’s David Shaw or yes, Denver’s Jack Del Rio (returning to the bay area) as the 18th head coach of the Oakland Raiders

add any players I might’ve missed in the draft/and or free agency
