Saints start too fast for Raiders

Posted with 1:57 remaining . . .
The Raiders couldn’t get started Friday night, and the result was a 28-20 preseason loss to the New Orleans Saints before 72,112 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

With the Saints having their way at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and Drew Brees slicing up the secondary, the Saints led 23-0 before Matt Flynn led a late touchdown drive on a two-minute drill before the half.

In the third quarter, a David Bass fumble of Seneca Wallace was recovered by Ryan Robinson for a defensive touchdown and an Omar Gaither interception of a deflected pass set up a 46-yard field goal by Eddy Carmona to get the Raiders within 23-17.

In the fourth quarter, Will Herring stuffed Jamize Olawale in the end zone for a safety not long after the Raiders had stuffed the Saints on a fourth-and-1 play inside the 5-yard line. New Orleans finished the scoring with Garrett Hartley’s fourth field goal of the game, this one from 28 yards.

The Raiders, 1-1 in the preseason, headed home realizing they found out a lot more good things about players they hoped to make the team than they did about the ones that will be their starters.

When the Saints and Raiders were playing their first team, it was a mismatch from the outset.

Brees had his way with the Raiders as he has in four previous preseason and regular-season games. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 202 yards and a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills on a play in which he had several seconds to throw.

Every New Orleans possession produced points until backup Seneca Wallace came in and kneeled on the ball to end the first half. Hartrley had field goals of 53, 31 and 30 yards and Mark Ingram had a 2-yard touchdown run.

The Saints were up 23-0 before they dialed back the pressure tactics, which helped Flynn direct an 82-yard, 11-play touchdown drive that ended in an 18-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore.

Before that drive, the Raiders had only a single first down in the half, with the Saints registering five sacks of Flynn.

Flynn ended his half completing 12 of 16 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown, most of that compiled on the last drive.

Veteran Alex Barron, getting first crack at the left tackle job which will be open for the foreseeable future with Jared Veldheer out following triceps surgery, struggled trying to block former Cal star Cameron Jordan.

The second-team defense go the Raiders back in the game by forcing two turnovers, but backup quarterback Terrelle Pryor struggled during his one quarter of play. Pryor was 1 of 5 for 9 yards and ran four times for 15 yards.

    Are the one and two stringers really that far apart?
    Sure does not look like it. Reggie and DA need to pull their heads out of their butt and make decisions and coach like it.

    =====

    I think that it’s more about the separation between the good teams (ie Saints) starters over their own backups.

    The Raiders are basically empty on star level starter talent and the fact is, a good chunk of their starters are probably good backups on other teams. The match up against an elite team like the Saints really shows. The injuries in the trenches on both sides of the ball, where the Raiders already had backups in, only exasperated this delta.

    Because of the Raiders cap situation, they’ve gone out and basically built themselves a roster that is two deep in NFL second stringers. The better teams, due to having a lot of star level contracts at starters, are less deep beyond those starters as they are full of minimum level contracts. The Raiders match up well here where it looks like they even have an edge.

    Unfortunately, real games are played number ones verse number ones for the whole game.

    Thats what i dont get about Mark.

    U want Palmer. U trade premium draft picks. Yet u fire the guy he was suppose to work with or hire a GM that doesnt want hue whatever it may be.

    You would think you would give it one year at least so they can see what comes of it. I just dont get it.

    ============

    Because Mark is a moron who didn’t learn anything while being Al Davis’s son. That’s why he is so easy to manipulate. Trade for Palmer? 2 guys say yes. Hire Reggie? Yup Ron Wolf says so, I bet he had no idea Wolf recommended Sherman for the GM job in GB, who failed. Fire the best coach since Trestman/Callahan/Gruden? Yup Reggie says so. And who did Reggie interview? The Mike Tice’s, Winston Moss’s, McCoy’s, Todd Bowles of the world. All those guys can’t touch Hue.

    Now Denise will have to take the fall for these 2 nitwits after a 2-14 season…And then we won’t be able to afford anybody because we’re still paying Knapp, Denise, Hue, etc. So here comes another idiot that will do what Grimmace says.

    I see the knee jerk crowd is out in full force, the oline played horrible which made it hard to evaluate the qb play flynn missed a wide open wr but made up for it with a perfect throw to moore. It was even harder to evaluate pryor because of 1 the oline and 2 the play calling was suspect we need to let pryor throw we know he can run. I think olson was trying to catch their D in a blitz and hit on a run play with pryor. Next game let pryor pass the dam ball

    Rewatching this disaster, and it wasn’t, at least to start, as bad as first thought.

    New Orleans got the ball after our turnover completed one pass and settled for a 53 yard FG.

    Next drive, Brees fades left, gets spiked to the ground, but a fraction of a second before that he uncorks a ball 55 yards in the air into a hat.

    Unbelievable throw, can’t do anything about that. And he was absolutely hammered right after throwing it.

    Wow. Wilson. 0 snaps

    Idk what to think of the DA doghouse? On the one hand, I like that he holds guys accountable. On the other hand, it seems like guys can’t ever get out. Like Taiwan last year. One fumble in game one and he never touched the ball again. I know these guys r pros, and we should expect a lot. But that fumble wasn’t even on Taiwan. And that was basically the last play he ever saw as a RB. Thinking Wilson is getting the same treatment.

    ====

    I don’t but that DA has a doghouse based on a single event. Jones did not get benched because of one fumble. That’s ludicrous to think.

    We don’t know how well or not he, or any players do every day in practice. DA does. If TJ was struggling in picking up pass blocking, running his routes, not protecting the ball well in practice, etc, then he was probably already on a very short leash. DA may have given him a chance to prove otherwise and he didn’t.

    Wilson didn’t get benched for any one bad play. It’s well publicized that he is not picking up the complexities of the offense at the rate they expect him to. Meanwhile, McGloin is and it shows in his decision making.

    For those that still don’t get it, decision making under pressure is like 75% of what makes QBs successful in the NFL. It’s WAY more important than arm strength, scrambling ability, running ability and all those other intangibles that people like to label as QB “talent”. Half of the plays are running plays. The layman fan doesn’t realize just how much impact the QB makes on running plays with his presnap reads and audibles. That’s 100% mental part of the game that affects at least half of the offense.

    This is why Flynn is currently and will be the starter. It’s why Pryor will always struggle. It’s why McGloin is passing Wilson on the depth chart. McGloin is known as a cerebral QB, while Wilson came in with a 20 on his Wonderlic, where many pundits claim a 21 is the lower bar for success.

    Guys stop fighting about this stuff man, it’s a waste of time. The Flynn lovers will praise him no matter what. They think anything he does is better than anything anyone else can do.

    The kid is doing the best he ca with what he’s got he’s limited and it’s not his fault the GM and HC put him in this position. He’s just trying to live up to the billing.

    Pryor’s body langauge was bad whe he took the field, he looks like he knows this is not the place for him. This HC will never give him a fair shot. When Cork said it before training camp I didn’t believe him I thought “how could a HC do that”. But it is what it is. Pryor realizes they do not want him as the starter under any curcumstances. And they will not give him the chance even if it presents itself. DJ said it best even if he outplays Flynn by a mile they will NOT give him that job and I see it now. They see him strictly as an athlete. Too bad because I think he can be very good even great but it wont be here and I realize that now. They would rather have Pee Wee Herman, at least he’s white.

    Pryor should go to Reg and ask to be traded, it’s his only chance. Flynn can stink it up for 4 qrtrs and they’ll make an excuse. I got nothing against that man nothing at all it’s against Reggie and his hitmen. Some day they’ll be shown for what they are ill-prepared to run an organization but until than they have their way. No reason to get mad just accept it because no way you cna change it.

    They should’ve taken Ansah but they didn’t they should’ve take Fisher but they didn’t. They took a kid who’s good maybe very good but he plays corner man. We needed line help in the worst way. I’m not sure Reggie understands what he’s doing I hope he does but all indications are he doesn’t.

    This is going to get worse before it gets better. I’ve resigned myself to that fact. I saw DA’s face mid second qrtr and he was repulsed by his offense and especially his QB. His only move was to leave him out there and HOPE like hell something good happened and good for Flynn he came through. Don’t blame that kid man he’s just doing what he can, he’s limited. Pryor needs to move on if he wants to have any semblance of a career because it wont be here………..period
