Practice begins in 30 minutes

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, August 18th, 2013 at 11:17 am in Oakland Raiders.

Beat writer Jerry McDonald has the day off. Therefore, I will cover practice today from Napa. Among the many things we expect to see today is: the first full contact practice for cornerback D.J. Hayden since he suffered a torn vein last November.
Hayden nearly died as a result of a freak collision with a teammate during practice at the University of Houston a little more than nine months ago. He has not participated in a contact drill of any kind since that injury.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Saturday night that Hayden is cleared for practice and is ready to go full tilt today. We’re about to find out.
We’ll share Hayden’s thoughts on his first practice without wearing a red, non-contact jersey and what his teammates think of Hayden’s progress toward making an impact on the Raiders defense.
Also, follow me on Twitter and Tout — @corkonthenfl — for instant updates from the practice field, through videos, pictures and words.

    So there is competition for the number 3 qb because both Wilson & macgloun have been “inconsistent ” in game… YET THERE IS NO COMPETIION FIR STARTING QB EVEN THOUGH PRYOR & PHLEGM HAVE ALSO BEEN UP & DOWN ?!?!?!

    No wonder this team won’t play for Allen he has Tom cables flip flop disease
    ==========================================

    When you say up and down, you mean, one (Flynn) has been Up, and one (Pryor) has been down right? And when you mean down, you mean waaaaaay down. Mistic, a guy who can’t complete 40% of his passes in the preseason, is not an NFL quality Q. Maybe Arena League. Maybe.
    ————————-

    Flynn has not been “up”. It’s called overrated. Flynn has been put in every position to succeed from the start. He was crowned the starter before he even stepped on the practice field. The same cannot be said for Pryor.
    Currently the REALITY is they are 1a and 1b and a REAL coach would handle it as such. But if you look at the Raider offense or lack there of anybody with a minimum football IQ would say Pryor at QB gives the Raiders the best chance to win games because of his athletic versatility.

    Looks like our off season began Friday night unless DA can turn this thing around. Won’t be able to rely on two wins from KC this year.

    What part of they will get together and scheme the hybrid this year are you NOT getting? You really aren’t very bright are you? I keep bringing up the fact that DC’s will scheme and teach their defenders how to play those plays. Not unlike when Mike McCoy had Teblow running a HIGH SCHOOL option offense, and he was tearing up the league for 5 or 6 games. Then the league caught up, and Teblow is hanging by a thread. Let’s see what happens to your unstoppable Hybrid offense now that DC’s have had a year to study it.

    Take Allen’s word for it

    Allen must go tonight!!!
    =====================================

    You seem to be flailing around like a baby in the deep end. Your guy was completely awful. I can go out there, complete 1 of 5 passes for basically no yards and almost get picked AGAIN in the red zone. I CAN DO THAT!!! Seriously. The Pryor experiment is over. In the immortal words of our former leader Al Davis, “Get ova it.”

    ===========================================

    Seymour: You’re forgetting Pryor Brigade Logic. Since Pryor was being pressured, all four of his incompletions count as completions. And since his TD run was nullified by the Parsons hold that let him get outside, that counts too.

    So he was really 5-5 with a TD.

    PS: Remember that neither Flynn nor McGloin gets the advantage of this counting system. ONLY Pryor.

    =====

    You forgot that part where they discounted Flynn’s great final drive and TD. That came against a prevent defense when the Saints stopped trying.

    Funny, that the only mentionable moments of Pryor’s success came last week against Dallas in a 2:00 minute drill against a prevent defense filled with #2s. And even then he choked the finish.

    Double standard? Naaaa, it’s clearly just the great Reggie conspiracy theory, coaching oppressiveness, and the complete and selfish lack of wanting to rearrange the entire offense around Pryor’s limitations.

    dont confuse passion for hate, at end of day everyone will root for the S&B to be successful. Those who want Flynn will have more patience than those who wanted TP6. its no different than those who hated Al excuse reggie for any mistakes and those who supported Al dont give Reggie the slack that those with a mancrush on reggie do. Sweeeeeet! I was thinking 4 to 6 for sure. Maybe the injury bug has gone away? McFadden on the field too. Like it or not.

    Rewatching the game finally. Burnett makes great tackle for loss then comes up lame. Foot or ankle. Couldn’t tell how he even got hurt. Looked like nothing. Hope he’s ok. LBs looking thin all of a sudden.

    If you wanted a different perspective than the myopic, I want it all and want it now, points of view spewed in here, go read a Saints board. I just did and I saw two themes discussing this game:

    1) Saints D looked great but “It was just the Raiders” and a patchwork O line, so don’t get too excited yet

    2) They were impressed with Flynn and thought “he’s a baller” that made things happen despite being dealt a horrible hand in this game. Several comments said that Raiders fan should be happy that they have a young QB with a large upside.

    But then what do Saints fans know about QBs? It’s not like they have one that is any good to watch. Their guy only throws for 5K yards regularly, so they have no basis to determine what good QB play is unlike the vocal minority of Raiders fans that think being big and fast is the key to QB success.

    No it isn’t, it’s based on his entire body of work. What we have seen from Pryor at OSU is what we have seen here in three seasons. And the scary thought about Pryor is he gets worse as games go on. He got worse in SD, he got worse in preseason game one, and worse in preseason game two. And that is what we would expect to see as defenses adjust to him.

    A positive note unless you are worrying about Hayden.

    Seems to me like the one of the last positions that we have to worry about is that of quarterback.

    Flynn is just an average kind of quarterback-he’s Alex Smith and he’s Jason Campbell-but he’s decent and will do for the moment if we have an effective OL.

    If you want to come on here and wail, wail about the offensive line.

    Flynn just not going to have success throwing longer than 25 yards, been clear all camp. Coaches have accepted that

    “The more throws I watched, the more his arm strength limitations were evident,” Jaworski said. “… In fact, I was concerned that his few deep balls lost energy at the back end. They had a tendency to die.”

    I was the first one, after going to camp to tell everyone here, that Pryor is NIGHT AND DAY, better than last year. You can look it up I am sure it is easily found. But again, as I said, as soon as pressure mounts, will the bad habits all kick back in? That was the question. And sadly, we know the answer.

    As I wrote, Pryor is one of the lowest rated Q’s in the entire league right now. You might not like the rating system, I do, but I don’t think you can argue that the 50th ranked Q is somehow better than the 5th ranked passer. The rankings do seem to follow basic logic. Flynn is ranked in the top 20, which is average, which is about right. Pryor is not an NFL quality Q according to the rankings. From what I have seen, that is about right as well.

    good knowledge. it’s the sad truth… i was startin to drink some of the kool aid… but he’s just not ready yet. i want to see him learn from the mistakes of bad end zone passes… not see him respond the next week by picking up what should be a dead ball in the backfield and lofting it up for an almost INT yet again. that was troubling

    Flynn’s noodle arm: http://www.nfl.com/videos/oakland-raiders/0ap2000000230905

    He throws the ball from the 25 yard line to the back half of the end zone, about 40 yards down field. Perfect accuracy and timing. And that was in the red zone where the prevent argument is moot.

    He also made the play with his head first, reading the single cover outside to identify the weakness, then using a pump fake to sell the slant route, freezing the CB to the inside and setting up the outside over the top throw.

    That’s a legit, NFL star QB caliber throw that would be on the highlight reel were it made by Brees, Rodgers or Manning.

    If that’s the sort of limitations that Flynn has and you have to tailor an offense to it, sign me.
