Practice begins in 30 minutes

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, August 18th, 2013 at 11:17 am in Oakland Raiders.

Beat writer Jerry McDonald has the day off. Therefore, I will cover practice today from Napa. Among the many things we expect to see today is: the first full contact practice for cornerback D.J. Hayden since he suffered a torn vein last November.
Hayden nearly died as a result of a freak collision with a teammate during practice at the University of Houston a little more than nine months ago. He has not participated in a contact drill of any kind since that injury.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Saturday night that Hayden is cleared for practice and is ready to go full tilt today. We’re about to find out.
We’ll share Hayden’s thoughts on his first practice without wearing a red, non-contact jersey and what his teammates think of Hayden’s progress toward making an impact on the Raiders defense.
Also, follow me on Twitter and Tout — @corkonthenfl — for instant updates from the practice field, through videos, pictures and words.

    Looks like Alex Barron is still the starting LT and Tafur tweeted he’s limping badly on a knee – with a brace on it. The backup is Willie Smith and we know how bad he is. On the right side, its Barnes starting with Bergstrom as the ‘emergency’ backup.

    And they’re not bringing *anybody* to at least try out?! DA’s smirk about not having a Anthony Munoz out there is typical. His attitude is unless he has probowlers, he can’t be expected to compete. Built in excuse for expected failure.

    I hope Reggie can find somebody, even after the cut downs to at least bring in for depth.. I guess the Packers dumpster is empty and he’s out of ideas..

    Flynn’s noodle arm: http://www.nfl.com/videos/oakland-raiders/0ap2000000230905

    He throws the ball from the 25 yard line to the back half of the end zone, about 40 yards down field. Perfect accuracy and timing. And that was in the red zone where the prevent argument is moot.

    He also made the play with his head first, reading the single cover outside to identify the weakness, then using a pump fake to sell the slant route, freezing the CB to the inside and setting up the outside over the top throw.

    That’s a legit, NFL star QB caliber throw that would be on the highlight reel were it made by Brees, Rodgers or Manning.

    If that’s the sort of limitations that Flynn has and you have to tailor an offense to it, sign me.

    Flynn has no pocket presence. Flynn can’t call a block for himself at the line. Flynn in shotgun formation throws a 5 yard pass on a 3rd and 13. And Flynn doesn’t go through reads well or fast enough. Pryor sucks Flynn rules wah wah wah. Face it they both did horrible and if we have no rush and no blocking its gonna be a long year for us no matter the QB.

    lol, everyone knows Pryor has improved..maybe not enough in DA eyes but you cant deny he has gotten better
    ===========================================

    I was the first one, after going to camp to tell everyone here, that Pryor is NIGHT AND DAY, better than last year. You can look it up I am sure it is easily found. But again, as I said, as soon as pressure mounts, will the bad habits all kick back in? That was the question. And sadly, we know the answer.

    As I wrote, Pryor is one of the lowest rated Q’s in the entire league right now. You might not like the rating system, I do, but I don’t think you can argue that the 50th ranked Q is somehow better than the 5th ranked passer. The rankings do seem to follow basic logic. Flynn is ranked in the top 20, which is average, which is about right. Pryor is not an NFL quality Q according to the rankings. From what I have seen, that is about right as well.

    ________

    good knowledge. it’s the sad truth… i was startin to drink some of the kool aid… but he’s just not ready yet. i want to see him learn from the mistakes of bad end zone passes… not see him respond the next week by picking up what should be a dead ball in the backfield and lofting it up for an almost INT yet again. that was troubling

    ====

    It’s what I’ve been saying about him all along. Sorry Pryor Brigade, but his mind is just too slow for this position at this level. The thing that breaks down for him under duress is decision making. No amount of exciting 8 yard runs or crazy scrambling to elude a sack is going to make up for the 3 or 4 turnovers per game that poor decision make will create once teams game plan to force him into those situations.

    He IS proven to be dangerous running with the ball in his hands. He’s proving time and time again to be a non-threat throwing it. Ryan flaunted this fact with his 46 defense that gave zero respect for his throwing ability. Other will emulate what works on film. His QB days in this league are all but done now.

    As Raiders fans, we should all be clamoring to see him setup to succeed as a ball carrying play maker ASAP with a position switch.

If Flynn goes down, due to injury, which is likely, and Pryor starts, I will then blame Pryor’s struggles on Reggie wanting to keep a black man down, and setting him up to fail.”

    It’s pretty hilarious that you are attempting to use Flynn’s stats against him through 2 preseason games. Not because you are using stats but because relative to other starters through the same number of games, playing against opponents #1s and limited to vanilla offenses, his stats are actually very good.

    And really, is there a starting QB out there that has had a worse OL in front of him for pass blocking as well a non-existent run game?

    Compared to other starters at this point in the preseason he is:
    - #8 in QB rating (and Eli takes one spot above him despite only throwing 5 times)
    - #15 in yards per attempt (so his weak arm somehow has him in the upper half of the league)
    - #9 in completion percentage (and above Drew Brees even after torching the Raiders)
    - #7 in attempts per game, adding more weight to all of the percentage based stats above

    If Pryor had numbers half this good this blog would erupt with the ordainment of him as the next super star in the league. But noooooooooooo, your guy isn’t the one succeeding so you try fruitlessly to manufacture negativity out of numbers that are actually fantastic in light of the stacked deck.

    Please continue to support your starting QB this way. If this is your idea of horrible QB play, I’ll take this trajectory of a > 75% completion rate and > 100 QB rating any day!

    You might want to go back and talk about the wave of the future at punting where at least King is showing something …

    Yeah, ‘My Guy’. Turns out he didn’t even have a ‘My Guy’. That whole reason for firing the current Hue was complete BS. He met DA at the combine and interviewed him once and then hired him and gave him a 5 year contract!! And don’t forget we had to pay Hue’s salary last year too as he was still under his 2 year deal.

    When Reggie took over we’re 8-8 and barely missed playoffs 2 years in a row, with an exciting young coach and a top 10 offense.

    Now, we have the worst HC in the league, and we’re about to go 4-12 for the 2nd straight year (if not 2-14) and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

    The thing about our awful pass rush is that we’ll need to send 5 or 6 guys after the QB just to match the level of pressure other teams get sending 4. I know that’snot going to happen, but that’s how bad it is. If we only send 4 or, Hah!, 3 we’re going to see embarrassing plays like the Brees TD pass multiple times every game. What exactly did he do in four years that deserved being resigned? I could see an argument for Bryant, but not worth what he got. But Shaughnessy?? Year in and year out we were told it would be his “break out” year and he never did anything. And when he did, it was against the run. And with as many problems as we had on defense last Friday, with 3 of 4 DL starters down, we still shut down the run for the most part 1s against 1s. Longest NO run was like 6 yards in the first half.

    Oline is in total shambles, figuring out who is actually going to start the season.
    Vanilla offense, sticking to basics.
    Injuries/dings keeping some starters on bench.

    ====

    You might want to study football history, Relentless. The 46 defense essentially went defunct as soon as the WCO caught hold of the league. That defense was designed to squash the running game first and foremost and then put mass pressure on the QBs when they went into a traditional passing offense. The WCO beat this by getting the ball into the hands of play making WRs early with short passes and then letting them outrun the safeties that are too close to the line of scrimmage.

    Flynn would have a field day facing a 46 utilizing the run after the catch of Denarious and hitting DMac on flares and screens outside the box. As Raiders fan I would welcome this defensive strategy!

    Ryan’s genius is using elements of the 46 as a counter to the read-option. The extra pressure takes away the single read letting the defense either kill the QB or continue to smother the run on hand offs. It takes away the play action by ensuring that the QB has no time on keepers so that the safeties can play up. The only passes left for the read-option QBs will be deep 1 on 1 isolations on the sidelines, where I’m sure the CBs will play off the line. By design, the passing attack out of the read-option needs time to develop, taking away the WCO style to slice the aggressive defenses up.

    What a read-option QB will have to do when facing a 46 style defense is to conform to a pocket passing WCO style QB. Those that can will succeed. Those more one dimensional will be short stories in the history of the NFL. Wilson will be fine. Cam, maybe. RGIII and Kaep are going to have an uphill climb because they lack so little experience in non-QB run oriented offenses.

    Who is the most sacked QB in football these days? Oh yeah, that Rodgers guy. Yeah, he sucks. So any QB that gets sacked a lot by definition must suck just as bad.

    I’ll take that kind of suck, thank you.

    Please continue to fruitlessly use stats as a negative without actually looking at what they mean relative to the rest of the league. It only makes your Flynn support that much more evident. At this rate, you’ll be buying a number 15 Raiders jersey before the season starts.

    Or we can talk about an even more detrimental no-stat. Intentional grounding. Loss of yards at the spot of the infraction, minus 10 more and loss of down. Pryor had one of those and tried for another in only 1 quarter. Great decision making there. That kind of play kills a drive far more than any sack because the QB had a chance and a choice to throw it out of bounds. Talk to me when Flynn starts making those mental meltdowns under pressure.
