Raiders claim Thomas

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 at 3:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A press release from the Raiders:

The Oakland Raiders have claimed LB Chase Thomas via waivers, General Manager Reggie McKenzie announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3, 241-pound Thomas originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in April and was waived by the team on Monday.

Thomas appeared in 52 games over four seasons at Stanford, making 47 starts. He recorded 229 tackles, 27.5 sacks, 50.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

During his senior campaign, the Marietta, Ga., native finished second on the team with 71 tackles, tied for second with 14.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, one interception, four passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He was an All-Pac 12 first-team choice for the second-consecutive season.

To create space on the roster, the Raiders waived/injured T John Wetzel.

Kirk- Pryor needs playing time, my pet peeve with allen is that he holds him back, obviously deliberate
    *******
    Oh Lord.

Exactly WHY would he hold him back?

Please keep it in the realm of the sane.

  • jumpnjiminy

I wish they would never have picked up Flynn. Then we could have Pryor start, McGloin #2, and Wilson 3. The fans would have no choice but to be ‘happy’.

Instead we got some guy (Flynn) who is not lightyears ahead of Pryor and bunch of angry fans. I couldn’t predict how many wins each of them would get if you started either of them for the whole season, but I’d bet it would be more than Palmer won last year.

Sure I wish we had a ‘sure’ thing in our qb but we’re stuck with a couple of guys nobody’s too sure of…so root for whomever starts be it Flynn or Pryor.

Do you really think we’re screwed b/c of our piss ass poor o-line? I ‘commented’ during the offseason that a lot of the Raiders’ focus should be on getting good guys there but what happens during the draft? What a bummer and just when I wanted to feel good again about the Raiders and that JRussell and Palmer are gone…I’d take Flynn or Pryor over either one of them any day, so phooey!

    ==========================================

What are the virtues of Pryor playing? He has looked awful. He has made major mistakes. He is among the lowest rated Q’s in the entire league right now. Its like sending a hitter out who has whiffed 50 straight times and say, well, I like his swing, he has to get better. No, he doesn’t have to get better. Pitchers are beginning to learn how to pitch to him and he is going to get even worse. You want to hold an entire FRANCHISE hostage until a few of you remaining holdouts come to grips with it?

Exactly. He didn’t. In fact he was turrible. EVERY OTHER Q that is actually going to play in this league, from Tom Brady, to EJ Manual looked good out there in the preseason. Then there were guys that didn’t look good. Stanzi, Teblow, Pryor. Do you guys think Tim Teblows should have, I don’t know, 8-9 starts to see if he can play? He has had INFINITELY more success in the league than Pryor?

you know the coach is going to play the guy game 1 in “packages”.

    ===================

i have a problem with this

we saw friday that simply having so called ‘packages” is not setting pryor up for success.

These so called packages are far too limited in scope.

looked like all they did was line him up in the pistol and said “run read option”

the true hybrid offense has progressions or pahses

    first establish the running back

dfense begins to chase the rb, then the qb fakes the hand off and keeps.

the defense then commits extra men to the run support like ryan did, and the qb is set up to pass with one on one coverage all over the field.

the qb must have the freedom to motion from tight formations like the diamond into spread formation

he must have full access to the entire base offense to take advantage of the defense when they over commit to the run / pass

a read option base offense is not sustainable and reduces pryor to gimmick wild cat type of player.

He has a better throwing arm than phlegm and is far better pre snap

give him the full compliment of the play book and allow him to run it through a pistol or wing t / shotgun formation

the wco is the perfect compliment because of the quick passing when the defense is forced into 1 on 1 coverage.

the final progression is the defense cheating up to take away the quick passes pryor hits them deep

motions shifts and misdirection are key

the raiders must commit to this if you are going to go in that direction, and it can be done mid stream just as the seahawks and niners did mid season last year
