Raiders OC Olson breaks it down

Some highlights of a media session with Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson:

On the loss of tackle Jared Veldheer: Going into the season, the power scheme, the gap scheme, Jared was an important part of that. We didn’t get a real chance last week to evaluate that part of the game as much as we would like to. We’ll continue these last two preseason games and more specifically Fridays’ game a little bit, t o see if that’s going to be something we continue to expand upon.”

On Terrelle Pryor’s role: We’re still kind of tinkering with that toy. We did some things in the first game we were pleased with. We went into the second game and tried some other schemes that we looked at and maybe weren’t as successful as they were in the first week. We’ll continue to change up and do some different things, so we have an entire package. Each week we’re trying to expose just a little bit with Terrelle, add a little bit to the initial package we had for him.

On ripple effect of Veldheer’s injury: I think it changes how we’re going to use everybody. It’ll impact how I use Darren McFadden, it will impact how I use Marcel Reece. You don’t lose a player like that and think you’re not going to have to change some things or do some things differently.

On the competition at tight end: We were starting to clear that up. We felt like David Ausberry was having a good camp and now again, with Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud, they’re in the battle for the No. 1 spot. We like the emergency of our young tight ends . . . but we’ll really take a good hard look at Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud this week.

On the inconsistencies of wide receiver Denarius Moore: A lot of it is going to be on Denarius. To me, it’s that whole character issue, becoming a self-starter, becoming a self-motivated person, and a lot of it comes with maturity. I think he’d be the first guy to say we’re constantly on top of him . . . we’ll just coach him up, but I think he’s becoming a more mature player and a more mature person. A lot of players will tell you, `Boy, I wish I had been more mature as a younger player.’ And I think that maturity will happen for Denarius.

On the maturity of wide receiver Rod Streater: I think when you’re talking about self-starters and self-motivated people, Rod Streater is that guy in the room to me. He’s the leader in that room just based on his work ethic, his preparation and the way he approaches the game.

On the progress of quarterback Matt Flynn: He’s been steady throughout this training camp and that’s Matt Flynn. That’s what he’s been about and what we’ve expected

Chargers are not moving to LA. The Chargers have zero fan base north of Oceanside and aren’t exactly losing money in SD, plus they have commitments to the city they’d have to buy out of. They haven’t fulfilled the requirement to the NFL to show they can’t be viable in their current location or get a new stadium in SD which they definitely can and will.
    ===========================================

They broadcast all the Charger home and away games in LA. SD has been winning the last ten years. Dischargers don’t have a stadium deal, much more of a fan base in LA for the Dischargers than the Raiders. + none of the headaches. Much more likely scenario.
    —–
KTLA plays the Silver & Black show and shows all preseason games. CBS plays almost all of the Charger games. But their fan base is extremely minimal. Even in SD their fan base is extremely weak. I live in LA and rarely see any Charger jerseys. I’ve seen Raiders, 49ers, Rams, Steelers and all other sorts of fans sporting their gear. No Charger gear. My cousin lives in SD and says he’s a Charger fan and never watches games. No fan base. Qualcomm is half and half everytime we play there. The coliseum got a bad wrap and is sub-standard and that’s why nobody goes. Not to mention possibly getting your ass-whooped. We as Raider fans can be crazy. This is gonna be a tough situation to handle.

Doesn’t the fact they air Charger games in LA have more to do with regional proximity than anything else?

Games are assigned by the networks in New York as to which regions get which games.

For instance, in Chicago we get Bears first of course on Fox, then if Bears aren’t playing or are on CBS then it’s the closest metro market team in the NFC. Green Bay, Detroit or Minnesota and if none of them are playing it’s St.Louis. On CBS (Afc) we get a ton of Indy Colt games and believe me there are very few Colt fans in Chicago area.

Yes, the networks DO use ratings and look for trends with certain teams in certain areas. That does play into it.

The national games…are of course nationwide and based on maximizing ratings which is why we always have to watch Dallas play NYG or since Peyton Manning came along… Denver games as the featured late aft matchup.

To go with this: yes. You are 100% correct. The issue is Oakland has small crewes. LA has GANGS and that problem has surfaced at Raider games in the past. With bad consequences. Sure, there are fights at parks and stadiums all over the country. But the Raiders and LA gangs brought it to another level entirely. And that is not going away.
    =========================
This is probably going to be the biggest obstacle to overcome.
These gangs started wearing raider colors as their gang colors. More than one gang wore the colors, just in different combo’s. Lots of people associated the colors with gangs and trouble, where it was doubtful that the huge majority of these bangers had clue one about football, just wore the colors to represent.
You add in Al underhanded ways, and the image is created, and will be a bich to get rid of.

How about you Pryor fans throw out some Facts instead of just foolishness….

Here are the facts from the N.O. game…We can compare Priors first game to Flynn’s or look at these players any way you wish…One is a QB and the Other is a Fast guy will little Character who cannot manage an offense or Lead Men ….

Here are the numbers for the Denver Game….How can you possibly put Pryor on the same Par with Flynn…

Pryor is not even close….The Numbers PROVE that

LETS MAKE THE COMPARESON EASY FOR YOU…

    Flynn Comp 12/16 (75%) …124 Yards…QB rating..117.7
    Pryer……. 1/5 (20%)……9 Yards……………39.6 QB rating

FACTS ARE REALLY TOUGH TO ARGUE WITH….

Then there is FRYER the LONG PASSER THE BIG ARM…1.8 yards per Passing Attempt………….Flynn…….7.8

ALSO NOTE Pryor’s long completion was 9 yards…Flynn’s TD pass was twice as long as that.

PRYER the Great runner…4 rushes for 15 yards 3.8 per rush…

Flynn 1 rush for 4 yards…4 yards per Rush

  • CDERaider

Problem with the ‘build it and then will come’ argument in Oakland is that nobody wants to invest in Oakland. Not anybody with a $1 billion or more (and you know its more) to spend on a football only stadium in a soft market in a city that’s on the brink of bankruptcy.

And Davis doesn’t have it that’s for sure. He has no other business interests than the Raiders – just like Al. And the team has been losing money for decades..

  • http://www.Raiders.com KoolKell

So far as fan support, Al put a bad taste in a lot of the local fans when he moved to LA, with about a 20 yr waiting list for tickets.

Then he comes back in 95′ and sues the City of Oakland 1Billion dollars.

And the Raiders were never the same. Losing, losing, laughably losing, how did they do it losing. Coaches, coaches coaches dysfunction on top of dysfunction.

  • DJ Johnny

351, That’s why I said Charger games in LA is more local proximity than fan base.

It used to be the local network affiliate in Des Moines (for example) could choose from a few options as to which games they could run on Sunday. That is not true anymore.

ALL the games are assigned by the networks beforehand based on regions. Except for the premiere national weekly Cowboy games we have to endure.

There are cases when KC is playing Miami for instance and the Miami market and KC market will get that game but no one else.

    Throughout the greater LA area.
Gangs wearing their colors don’t want to stick out, obviously, so wearing local team, raiders, colors, was adopted.
The locals associated the raiders with trouble, and the media loved pushing that notion.
Those bangers gave a bad eye to an already swollen puffy eye, and I would imagine any vote, either in LA or Santa Clara, would be soundly rejected.

I’ve lived in SD off and on for years and the support for the chargers comes and go with their record – they win and they sellout, they don’t and they don’t do much. The numbers of visiting fans has a ton to do with the fact SD is a huge vacation destination especially in the winter to come out to see your team play and get a weekend at the beach is in very prevalent and people pay top dollar (mostly to season ticket holders selling their seats if the chargers are losing).

    same holds for the padres..

And there definitely ain’t NO Charger fans in LA. :) LA hates a loser and despite the latest failings – the Raiders brought the only NFL title to the city and they have 3 Lombardi’s to carry around..

LA will go nuts if the Raiders come back and they will sell a ton of PSL’s before the stadium is even built, it would be the ‘Hollywood Raiders’ all over again – all we’d need is another star like Marcus Allen.. Clowney and Johnny Football might due..

What if the team isn’t winning? Or the team is winning and then starts losing? And seats flood on the market for cheap? Or preseason tickets which are always given away to whoever? Like you said, gangs will come in and infiltrate that stadium, regardless of cost. And the second someone gets shanked in the stadium, which is going to happen, then decent season ticket holders will throw in the towel, and it will be a ghost town again with huge repercussions throughout the league . Believe me, the league knows this.

I really want the Raiders to stay in the bay. But it seems like so many in the bay are haters. It frikn burns me up to see the fruity niners getting a shiny new stadium and we are stuck sharing the A’s baseball stadium.. playing on dirt in the hood.

At least for years they had to play candlesh*t, even worse than the coliseum it was also in the hood and was a baseball stadium. Now, we’re more than ever the 2nd fiddles in the bay and I’m tired of all the haters in the bay and even the crap local media is just so against the Raiders its sickening and feel almost hopeless. Listen to the LA radio and they are always positive about the team, in the bay they talk crap all the time.

Tired of it – we go back to LA where we are loved and take over the #1 market in the country, get the best stadium in the league and start kicking azz again I’d love to tell the whiner fans to fck off phags… the Raiders are where they truly belong which is back on top.

Off topic but it irritates me that the freaking Dallas Cowboys are so beloved everywhere. What is it about them? I never got that. Is it the stupid star on their helmet? Do they evoke romantic thoughts about the old west when “Cowboys” roamed the frontier?

Why would people in Illinois have some affinity to a bunch of jagoffs in Texas? (no offense TxRaider).

DJ, it’s easy they won in the early years and had one of my all-time favorite QB’s in Roger Staubach. Who was just the boy next door whom evey mother wanted her daughter to marry. He was anti Joe Namath and when they were winning the NFL Films came out with a yearbook film called “America’s Team” and they really were the most watched team in America. It has since stuck because of the recent dynasties. But if this keeps up they could end up like us. A ghost town.

Priest is right about this. They fostered the “good guy” squeaky clean image and more importantly, they won. Everyone supports a winner. One of the major things with the Cowpies is Tex Shramm WISELY put them in the NFC East because of the big eastern city television markets. Wise choice.

We are the converse of that. We were the counter culture team. We were the do it our own way team. We weren’t “squeaky clean”. But to live outside the law you must be honest. We had integrity. That’s the thing that has been lost to Raider fans recently, especially with the LA thing. Now it’s just about being a bad ass. Well, the “new” bad ass doesn’t give a fu**. He shoots and kills women and little kids. That’s not what real Raiders are about.
