Raiders OC Olson breaks it down

Some highlights of a media session with Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson:

On the loss of tackle Jared Veldheer: Going into the season, the power scheme, the gap scheme, Jared was an important part of that. We didn’t get a real chance last week to evaluate that part of the game as much as we would like to. We’ll continue these last two preseason games and more specifically Fridays’ game a little bit, t o see if that’s going to be something we continue to expand upon.”

On Terrelle Pryor’s role: We’re still kind of tinkering with that toy. We did some things in the first game we were pleased with. We went into the second game and tried some other schemes that we looked at and maybe weren’t as successful as they were in the first week. We’ll continue to change up and do some different things, so we have an entire package. Each week we’re trying to expose just a little bit with Terrelle, add a little bit to the initial package we had for him.

On ripple effect of Veldheer’s injury: I think it changes how we’re going to use everybody. It’ll impact how I use Darren McFadden, it will impact how I use Marcel Reece. You don’t lose a player like that and think you’re not going to have to change some things or do some things differently.

On the competition at tight end: We were starting to clear that up. We felt like David Ausberry was having a good camp and now again, with Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud, they’re in the battle for the No. 1 spot. We like the emergency of our young tight ends . . . but we’ll really take a good hard look at Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud this week.

On the inconsistencies of wide receiver Denarius Moore: A lot of it is going to be on Denarius. To me, it’s that whole character issue, becoming a self-starter, becoming a self-motivated person, and a lot of it comes with maturity. I think he’d be the first guy to say we’re constantly on top of him . . . we’ll just coach him up, but I think he’s becoming a more mature player and a more mature person. A lot of players will tell you, `Boy, I wish I had been more mature as a younger player.’ And I think that maturity will happen for Denarius.

On the maturity of wide receiver Rod Streater: I think when you’re talking about self-starters and self-motivated people, Rod Streater is that guy in the room to me. He’s the leader in that room just based on his work ethic, his preparation and the way he approaches the game.

On the progress of quarterback Matt Flynn: He’s been steady throughout this training camp and that’s Matt Flynn. That’s what he’s been about and what we’ve expected

How much worse would the gang thing be if ANY team came to LA?
    ========================================

Read my post above please. Gangs aren’t going to embrace the Rams or the Dischargers or the Jaguars like they will the Raiders. Trust me on this.

“I really want the Raiders to stay in the bay. But it seems like so many in the bay are haters. It frikn burns me up to see the fruity niners getting a shiny new stadium and we are stuck sharing the A’s baseball stadium.. playing on dirt in the hood.”

We had 2 chances at being in that shiny new stadium and both times 2 different Davis’s snubbed their noises at it.

California is in debt it makes sense to share a stadium and the commissioner was here twice saying the NFL would double its cash input if the Raiders would share the stadium. It only gets used 10 times a year.

Al said no then the commissioner tried with Mark who said no as well. We had 2 chances.

Don’t think relocation alone will solve all this teams problems…
Ownership is the laughing stock of the league,
Management is questionable and the HC has zero record and the personality of a house plant. Not exactly the Lakers/Dodgers model of doing biz…

Gangs won’t really be a problem in a new stadium in LA. The tickets are going to be so expensive – like the whiners tickets are going to be – ridiculous. And there will be PSL’s all over the place. The gang thing in south central started cuz you could buy a ticket for like $5 face value in the nosebleeds – the stadium was so huge 100k – they sold tickets at the top for cheap cheap and it was a sea of gang banging going on up there game after game..

Won’t happen in a new stadium in LA.. Not saying there won’t be any problems at all but def nothing like LA in the late 80’s/early 90’s that sh*t was craaaazzy..
    =================================================

What if the team isn’t winning? Or the team is winning and then starts losing? And seats flood on the market for cheap? Or preseason tickets which are always given away to whoever? Like you said, gangs will come in and infiltrate that stadium, regardless of cost. And the second someone gets shanked in the stadium, which is going to happen, then decent season ticket holders will throw in the towel, and it will be a ghost town again with huge repercussions throughout the league . Believe me, the league knows this.

You bring up a good point that no doubt many if not most Santa Clarans would worry about.
Most football fans in Santa Clara are Niner fans. I don’t think there’s any doubt there. Not saying all, saying most.
68,000 Raider fans getting out of a game, with thousands wandering the local watering holes, that are decked out with Niner gear, with people walking the streets wearing their teams colors, and you just know something will happen.
Not saying who’s going to start it, but something will happen.
The preseason games between the teams were canceled. For a good reason. No doubt that will also be brought up.
Just can’t see the south bay voting the raiders in

How about you Pryor fans throw out some Facts instead of just foolishness….

Here are the facts from the N.O. game…We can compare Priors first game to Flynn’s or look at these players any way you wish…One is a QB and the Other is a Fast guy will little Character who cannot manage an offense or Lead Men ….

Here are the numbers for the Denver Game….How can you possibly put Pryor on the same Par with Flynn…

Pryor is not even close….The Numbers PROVE that

LETS MAKE THE COMPARESON EASY FOR YOU…

    Flynn Comp 12/16 (75%) …124 Yards…QB rating..117.7
    Pryer……. 1/5 (20%)……9 Yards……………39.6 QB rating

FACTS ARE REALLY TOUGH TO ARGUE WITH….

Then there is FRYER the LONG PASSER THE BIG ARM…1.8 yards per Passing Attempt………….Flynn…….7.8

ALSO NOTE Pryor’s long completion was 9 yards…Flynn’s TD pass was twice as long as that.

PRYER the Great runner…4 rushes for 15 yards 3.8 per rush…

Flynn 1 rush for 4 yards…4 yards per Rush

    ************************

This is so fckng bogus. Stats dont mean sh!t. Flynn had the entire first half and the eye test, wow factor, and overall general excitement was a total fckng 0. Results will be in vs Chicago. We’ll either climb aboard the Flynn jockstrap or stand firm for Pryor.

If you are Pryor guy, you should be glad Flynn is here to take the beatings while the O Line gets itself together…which may take all season at this rate.
If your a Flynn guy, you get to see your guy get his opportunity…
I don’t care who’s back there cause TE lies and poor blocking by the backs will hinder any QB’s success until these issues are resolved…
    ================================================

See, I’m not a Pryor guy. I’m not a Flynn guy. I’m a “football” guy. I have been around the game my entire life. The reason I have been critical of Pryor is because the critique was deserved. As I have said, is Matt Flynn Dan Marino? Well, no. But Flynn certainly has skills and he can be a solid Q in this league. And is a much better player than many of you believe. I can see why solid football guys have either drafted him, traded for him or kept him. He is a good player.

As regards to Pryor you just don’t see players languish for a few years and then turn INTO Dan Marino. It just doesn’t happen. Either they come into the league and excel, or they come into the league, excel for awhile and then the league figures them out, or they are out of the league. That is basically all that happens. For a guy to sit in the league for four or five years developing into Dan Marino is just not realistic. Sorry.

Just have to weigh in on Flynn’s 5 sacks. I broke down the tape of two, one a 3 step drop the other a 7 step drop.
3 step drop and Flynn got caught holding the ball. This is the throw into tight coverage that a good QB puts only where his guy can catch it or it’s incomplete. Flynn was too worried about his stats and held the ball and got crushed. The online failed, the receivers failed, Flynn failed! The ball needed to leave the QBs hand. Flynn takes the most fault.
7 step drop again Flynn got caught holding the ball. This is a long developing play for big yards. If your guy is covered and you don’t trust him on the jump ball then you over throw him. This also makes the defence back off and opens your run or dink and dunk game. Also your check down guy, Reese in this case was open as a secondary option. Flynn didn’t trust his own arm, or knows he has no arm and failed to even look at his second option. Again the oline failed, the receivers needed more separation in this play so they failed too. Again the biggest failure in this play was Flynn. He made the 7 step drop knew he was in trouble and took the sack. Dude is more worried about his completion rate then missing 10+ yards.
Pryor has his problems too. Flynn’s problems are in his ego and can’t be fixed. Pryor’s problems are being too new to the NFL game and can be coached and fixed.

I don’t know he’s sucked. And he’s not my guy. He’s definitely got room for improvement. But he hasn’t sucked. I like QBs that don’t turn the ball over or try to turn the ball over in the red zone.

I was truely embarrassed for the kid and I WAS PULLING for him to get together. If Pryor even thought about playing that poorly you guys would try to tar and feather him………period

    @@@@@@@@@

First of all, fack you for referring to me as part of a Klan, you ignorant, small minded, semi-retarded, racist pig

Second, Flynn did pretty well for what he had to work with. And frankly, I don’t think Pryor did much worse. Except he didn’t get the ball down the field, an NO was obviously more prepared for the “Pryor package” than Dallas was.

I don’t actually think either QB sucked due to the circumstances they were in. But a the exception of a few plays a game, the ones that always stick it in my mind, and determine most games, is what happens in the red zone. I remember flynn’s 28 yard dart to Moore, and I remember Pryors fumbled shotgun snap that was tossed up for grabs. Those r the two offensive plays that stick out the most to me from that game. Which play would you prefer to see on a regular basis? You disgusting, hypocritical, racist pig?

I do NOt read the dude for that very reason. But I would love to be ashamed for a change rather than realizing I’m right. DA may not be doing something specifically because of his color. As much as it is his belief system. You guys just don’t get it. DA is NOT OUT and OUT RACIST anyone can see that. It’s just a system of belief it’s how he has always seen it done.

What you young cats and old just don’t get. It isn’t blantant racism that causes unfairness. It’s an honest to god “hey I’m trying to do teh right thing here”………….belief system. He truely believes he doing right by Pryor it’s not intentional OVERT racism it’s just how things have been done for AGES. He just doesn’t KNOW any better…………period

RNO—yeah well Flynn has had big games in the nfl.

    Pryor hasn’t.

    Flynn is highly rated.

    Pryor isn’t.

90+ rated qbs almost always go to the playoffs.

72 rated qbs almost never do.

There are facts and there are opinion-laden agendas that stink.

    I will go with facts.
    ——————–

Stop with the 90 rating. It’s based on only 2 games. Once again one being the deceiving “dink n dunk” over hyped Lions game..

I have a Sports Illustrated from Gruden’s 2nd year and the Raiders are one the front page. The title says, “The Silver and Black are Back!”

Rich Gannon wasn’t exciting? Lol. The offense was a well oiled machine with Rich, and his mobility was very exciting. Just when you thought a play was dead, he kept it alive.

Please don’t ever compare Rich with Flynn. lol

Pryor has that same type of escapability in him, hence the nickname Houdini.

Lets just add to that about “exciting”. Who gives a shlt? Rich Gannon wasn’t fun to watch. He just won games. I’ll take that until we can find our next Kenny Stabler. Or our Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Another couple of REAL exciting guys.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so facking sad around here sometime

Rich Gannon had Rice and Brown to throw to. It was pretty exciting..

If Flynn had that it would also be exciting. But he doesn’t and neither does Pryor. And Gannon was about as vanilla as it gets. You know as well as I do that Gannon to rice and brown is not the type of excitement that the Pryor campaign is talking about. W Gannon it was about winning. W Flynn it’s about managing. It is what it is.

There you have it. And it didn’t take being in L.A. to get that coverage. The NFL is best when teams like ours is doing well.

Can’t tell me we play second fiddle to anyone when we’re playing well. If we are, well then that’s a clue that you’re right smack dab in the middle of haterville…SF of course.

    =================================================

    Dr Bob,

You mentioned earlier why would DA try to hold Pryor back. under normal circumstances, youre right, why would a coach try to hold back a talented player. but in this case, DA is holding Pryor back because in theory, Flynn DOES give the raiders the best chance to win right now, IF this were a team like the Packers for whom he threw 6 TDs for.

The PROBLEM is, the raiders arent the packers, theyre the raiders. and with flynn at the helm, the raiders will win 6 games tops. DA can then go to reggie and davis and say “well see, thats an improvement over last year”

if Pryor starts, sure there will be growing pains, and maybe the raiders end up winning only 2 games. but ill take that and have the chance of Pryor growing as a QB. worst comes to worst, the raiders end up with a preemo draft pick and can continue to build. with 6 wins, raiders end up without a preemo pick.

if this were a contending team en route to the playoffs, id bang the drums for flynn. the reality is, especially with the atrocious oline, the raiders wont contend. might as well see what TPs got. at worst, he fails and we get picks. at best, hes able to scramble (which the raiders need considering their Oline) and the raiders rally to win more games than expected.

“Managing” is not going to get Raiders wins. The offense and Defense are not good enough. They will have to takes some chances. Take some shots. Not going to happen with Flynn.

I was more comparing Gannon to Pryor. Since that’s who they were saying was exciting. You should read back some. Anyway, If Flynn can manage a game and not turn it over in the end zone, that’s good enough for me. Gannon didn’t win games w his arm. With some seasoning, Flynn may not have to either. Gannon was exciting because we were winning. W the exception of the occasional scramble, he was anything but exciting.

421, Oak, Remember that it IS entertainment for some. People want to be titillated (how’s that for a word) and the thought of Pryor running around evading people and tossing long bombs is appealing. Of course there’s doubt by a lot of guys here that he CAN throw those long bombs and score TD’s.

Flynn? “Steady”, “sound”, “game manager” are terms a lot of people associate with him.

I’d rather win than be entertained and lose. That’d be like watching a cool action movie and being totally ticked off and disappointed at the ending.

I had said that I wasn’t convinced Pryor couldn’t be a qb that could score and win games for us, and that I didn’t believe he couldn’t throw the football based on what I’d seen so far.

I STILL have not seen enough to close the book on him.

Like Plunkett said in the broadcast last game “I wanna see Pryor throw the football”.

Can we at least have him throw a variety of passes including long balls, short ones and intermediate some time? Then if he’s as bad as a lot of guys say we can close the book on him.

I’ve been disappointed in not seeing him attempt the passes i’d like to see him attempt.

What are 5 passes gonna show us? What is one start on a rainy day gonna tell us about his potential.

If Aikman was judged on his first start we would’ve never seen him again. No qb should be judged on one pro start.

I realize the league owes Pryor nothing. Tons of qb’s never even get that much, but for me personally i’d really like to see more with my own eyes before i’m convinced he’s as bad as some say.

Once again, Priest just refuses to consider that Pryor’s not a good quarterback. Just like with Debo and JaPaycheck, he refuses to let anything that disturbs his preconceived notions enter his head.
