Raiders sign tackle Tony Hills

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 at 10:57 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders addressed a glaring need at tackle Tuesday with the addition of free agent Tony Hills.

Hills has played in 10 games over five seasons with one start for Pittsburgh, Denver and Indianapolis. He was released by the Buffalo Bills Sunday.

A former fourth-round draft pick (No., 130 overall) in the 2008 draft, Hills played in 42 games at Texas, with 24 starts at left tackle.

With Jared Veldheer out indefinitely following triceps surgery, Menelik Watson unavailable with a calf injury and undrafted free agent John Wetzel out with a knee injury, the only true tackles on the roster are starters Alex Barron and Khalif Barnes and reserve Willie Smith.

The Raiders have also been using Tony Bergstrom at tackle of late.

To make room on the roster, place kicker Eddy Carmona was waived/injured. Once he clears waivers, Carmona can be added to the Raiders injured reserve list and rehab until healthy.

They released Carmona for this new tackle. I expect them to resign him after all the cuts are made. I hope.

I’m looking at value. I believe Flynn will be top ten, therefore a good #2.

Moore could have a top 20 year. Reece will get 50 or 60 yards a game.

Ausberry might surprise IF he makes the team

    *******

All represent value if you are picking while everyone else is on their kickers and defenses runs. otherwise there’s no good value there.

    Why?

The shot that rang true and hurt from the deadspin hate piece was that likely the best first round draft pick in this millenium was a kicker.

    damn. gut punch!

I will be grabbing d.moore for sure in the mid rounds.

    ********

It was between him and Ben Tate last night in the 10th round. I had to take Tate, because of Foster’s back problems. D Moore too inconsistent to use even as a flex. Tate is a high upside high risk gamble. we’ll see.
    ********
ALWAYS look for 3rd year receivers. Especially his who have have had some level of production their first two years.

It’s historically documented that 3rd year receivers “arrive”.

I have high hopes for Moore.

  • 24

    Flynn…top ten? That’s bold! I’d say top 20.

He’s going to need an offensive line, a healthy running back, WR’s who can consistently catch the ball and a hybrid TE.

And we don’t have any of that.

  • R8ER MIKE

Can’t swivel and his hips don’t open up in time to engage. He’s got old-man-itis

lmao !! sounds like my ole lady !!!!

  • 24

Moore…Top 20? Hmmm…I think Streater will outplay Moore. Streater is a better West Coast, possession type receiver that should be more Tim Brown reliable. I think Moore will be #3 behind Streater and Reece in catches.

  • guest123

I have high hopes for Moore.

    ******

I agree with the 3rd year theory, but only works when there is continuity at the QB spot. Moore’s working on his 3rd QB, and he’s not a gifted route runner. The only thing he’s proven is the nine route.

  • 24

Ausberry won’t start because we simply can’t protect the QB.

If Flynn is top ten, he’s a great #2.

Moore could be top 20 and likely will be drafted as a top 40.

Ausberry could be top ten as a receiver if he starts and is a great #2.

So that he can do what?

  • Derek

The Raiders have needed Oline help for the past couple of years and beyond. Reggie Mc failed to address that need during the off season. Instead he over loaded the TE and RB’s positions. Last season Willie Smith proved he had no business being on a NFL roster or training camp. Reggie Mc failed to even look for a replacement for that obvious reject (Smith). As it stands, the team will enter the season with expansion like Offensive and defensive lines (team foundation). Reggie Mc and his pathetic coach DA are clueless.

The Warriors changed management (taking over a team far worse than the post AD Raiders). They immediately hired competent management who upgraded business operations, systematically rebuilt the roster and converted losers into winners. Losers, stumble, bumble and make excuses while cluelessly rebuilding indefinately. Creative winners get things right and make it happen.

  • 24

Dr Robert – To be fair…I completely agree with you about the 3rd year WR history.

  • the famous dr robert

    Moore– 75/1100/8

Flynn– top ten due to his 90+ rating.

    Think Matt Schaub.

This indeed is why when we have on the roster now
    Bair DL
    BAMES T
    CARTER DE
    CARWFORD DE
    HOUSTON DE
    HUNTER DE
    McGEE DT
    ROBINSON DE
    WLKER DT

that all of the defensive lineman

  • 24

Derek – Please don’t compare the Warriors to the Raiders. We’re talking about 5 starters to 22 starters. It’s just a different sport and far more complex than basketball.

Also…it’s not easy to find good players and we haven’t had the money to spend for good players at these positions so we’ve had to work with what we have. I expect next year to be very different. We’re still rebuilding.

he does have a knack for the garbage time TD’s. But he also has a knack for disappearing in some games as well. and one thing to keep in mind about WR’s who score TD’s. It’s fluky and hard to predict. Look at Andre Johnson, he’s a great WR who hardly ever scores TD’s. It’s pure luck.

Barksdale will be starting for the Rams before the year is over at R. Tackle. I think he was cut because at the time we still looked half way decent and he’s wasn’t a zone blocker. He was a stud at LSU playing in the 9th Division of the NFL–SEC. He was Hue Jackson pick I think that played into him getting cut as well.

I think he’s taking about wins. Not FFL. I posted it yesterday. Last year the 8 top QBR leading QBs got to the playoffs, and the top 9 out of 11 I think. Of that trend continues, and it should because its really an every year thing, not just last year, then Flynn having a 90+ rating, under almost any circumstance, should translate into wins.

    It translates to production.

    Like Schaub.

In fact I often will roll with the two top ten qbs that aren’t top five.

    Play matchups.

Unless I can get an elite qb.

Flynn is my secrete this year.

Depends on where I’m drafting of course.

But I will gladly take two rbs with my first two picks and grab a guy like Schaub in the mid rounds and pair him with an under the radar guy like Flynn.

    YES!!!

This is EXACTLY what I’ve been trying to say.

    90+ almost always means playoffs.

Flynn comes to us with a career 92 rating.

His last two starts were over 100.

His two preseason games have been 90+.

Regardless of everything else, OVER TIME, a 90+ qb gets wins.

I’d like to see the stats on that analysis. just to be sure. You know what makes playoffs? Ability to punch the ball in the end zone. You look at the teams who can optimize scoring drives in the red zone with 7 points instead of 3, and you can name all the playoff teams before the season even starts. It’s a direct correlation. game managers get FG’s. franchise QB’s punch the damn ball across the line.
