Pryor puts himself in QB picture

What seemed to be the inevitable ascension of Matt Flynn as the Raiders starting quarterback is now an open question.

Terrelle Pryor thrust himself into the conversation Friday night by bringing the Raiders back from the dead in a 34-26 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears at O.co Coliseum.

Pryor scored on a 25-yard scramble and hit a clutch 19-yard touchdown pass to sixth-round draft pick Nick Kasa as the Raiders rebounded from a 27-3 deficit to get within 27-20 after three quarters.

By the time Matt McGloin took over in the fourth quarter, Pryor had given coach Dennis Allen and offensive coordinator Greg Olson something to think about, as much by Flynn’s struggles as by Pryor’s playmaking ability.

Asked afterward if he would consider Pryor as the potential Week 1 starting quarterback, Allen said, “I think we’ll have to take a look at it. I don’t think Matt played well. Terrelle came in and gave us a spark. I’m not going to make any decisions tonight.’

Flynn was 3-for-6 for 19 yards, had two interceptions _ both on throws that weren’t close _ and was getting resounding boos from the home crowd.

“That’s the game of football,’’ Flynn said. “That’s what happens when you have passionate fans that expect a certain level of performance.’’

Pryor had 37 yards rushing on three carries and completed 7 of 9 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Upon entering the game with 6:52 left in the first half, Pryor also initially struggled. He threw high for for Streater on a third-and-11 play to Rod Streater that should have been intercepted by Bears safety Chris Conte, who dropped the ball.

Late in the half, Pryor’s 26-yard completion to Mychal Rivera set up Sebastian Janikowski for a 58-yard field goal.

In the second half, against the Bears’ second-team defense, Pryor scrambled to his left and lofted a 19-yard jump pass to Streater for a first down. He later raced around right end for the 25-yard score.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 30-yard field goal after a Josh McCown fumble got the Raiders within 27-13, and then the former Raiders quarterback threw an interception to Joselio Hanson, setting up more Pryor heroics.

Sacked for an 11-yard loss earlier in the series, and faced with third-and-16, Pryor threw a perfect seam pass to Kasa at the goal line for the touchdown.

“I just want to go out and compete,’’ Pryor said. “To me, that’s just what I do. That’s how I expect to play. My teammates stepped up and made a lot of plays for me.’’

Neither quarterback was interested in entering a debate as the Raiders begin a short week heading into their final preseason game at Seattle Thursday night.

Flynn, who was the presumptive starter in Seattle last season only to lose the job to Russell Wilson, was asked if he had jeopardized a potential starting position with the Raiders.

“I’m not sure,’’ Flynn said. “I’ll go out, keep busting my tail and look t oplay better. Week No. 3 in in the preseason is not going to affect me in the long run.’’

Said Pryor: “I’m not looking to get into who is going to start. We’ve got a lot of things to fix and we’re going to fix them together.’’

In trailing 27-3 at the end of the first half, the Raiders were actually worse than they were the week before in New Orleans, where they were down 23-7 at halftime. Chicago outgained the Raiders 252 to 92 and a 14-4 edge in first downs.

Quarterback Jay Cutler was 12 of 21 for 142 yards and a 32-yard touchdown to Matt Forte, and Forte also rushed for 76 yards on six carries. Former Raider Michael Bush had scoring runs of 10 yards and one yard.

The first-half highlight for the Raiders was the return to action of cornerback D.J. Hayden, who had not played since last November after rupturing a blood vessel to his heart in a practice at Houston.

Hayden gave up his first completion (a 22-yard pass to Brandon Marshall), made his first tackle and broke up his first pass.

“No question he was rusty,’’ Allen said. “It was good to get him on the field. He got a lot of firsts out of the way tonight.’’

– McGloin, who played the fourth quarter, was 7 of 14 for 128 yards, a 5-yard touchdown to Jamize Olawale and two interceptions.

– Streater went out with a concussion on the 15-yard catch from Pryor in the third quarter. Brice Butler and Usama Young left the game with hamstring strains, and Hanson had a groin injury.

– Janikowski kicked a 58-yard field goal off the dirt at the end of the second half and was wide right in the first half from 49 yards.

– Jacoby Ford raced 62 yards with a kickoff return after Josh Cribbs mishandled his first attempt and fumbled the second, with the Raiders recovering.

– Running back Darren McFadden has a minor shoulder injury and could have played if it were a regular season game, Allen said.

So looks like Dr Rob is now in support of Pryor starting because to him it’s all about passer ratings and percentage.

Wow, Pryor has won everybody over.

    Preseason
    Passer rating

    Flynn – 70
    Pryor – 80

    Go Raiders!
    *********
    Quit acting a fool.

It’s a body of work. It was pryors only good game.

    Flynn has set records.

    Pryor may have pulled ahead.

I have ALWAYS said there are TWO criteria.

    Numbers AND what I see.

Use both to make an informed decision.

I still know Flynn is better but Pryor has made even me wanna kinda buy the fools gold.

    But I’m not a fool like u.

So go screaming down the road about ur fools gold. It’s gonna be worthless.
    ————–

All you ever talk about is passer rating. Now that it’s not in Flynn’s favor you dismiss it… LOL
When QB’s are trying to win the starting job all that maters is the preseason and who plays better. Flynn knows all about that…”cough”.. (Russel Wilson)
According to your beloved passer rating talk PRYOR is better.

Can’t believe I bought into all that Geno Smith hype.

And Kudo’s to the WV coach, who spent the last 3 years talking up Geno and his work ethic, his humbleness and passion for the game.

Then he comes out this year and says the team lacked leadership and work ethic, lol.

Anyways, that dude sucks. Glad we drafted Hayden.

At least your man-ing up…but still don’t agree with your QB opinion!

I’d rather start Gradkowski over Flynn!! TP gives us the best chance of actually winning a couple more games.

  • Nini

I keep hearing you guys talk about how Flynn is established in this league. What has he done? He started a couple games for GB and did well against defenses that didn’t have enough film to prepare for his style. It’s not like we’re dealing with Peyton Manning. Pryor has had to provide momentum in 2 of the 3 preseason games. Flynn supposedly doesn’t make the mistakes, but neither do I sitting on my couch. With this team I would much rather see some chances trying to win rather than not making mistakes, wait until we are down 20 points and then put up some numbers.

I’m not saying the massive gutting wasn’t merited. I’m more curious if it had ever happened before.

There’s some stuff I wouldn’t have done but I agree we don’t know yet if it was the best move to do or not long term.

Obviously short term it created a depleted roster that most feel makes us comically bad.

All that being said i’m still not giving up this season yet cuz i’m either in denial, a hopeless fan who can’t see the writing on the wall, or I see some reasons for optimism despite everything the “experts” and my eyeballs see.

    ——————

Created a depleated roster? Says who. All the guys we lost were bums for the most part. You see Michael Bush starting in Chicago? Me neither. And he’s the best guy we lost.

    It’s simple.

I look at their career coming in. Advantage Flynn in a MAJOR way.

I look at the preseason as a whole. Flynn destroyed Pryor easily in the first two. Pryor beat Flynn in the third.

I go by what I see and what the numbers tell me.

Numbers in their career favor Flynn.

Pryors preseason numbers slightly favor him.

What I see? Flynn is a good passer. Pryor is athlete playing backyard ball.

I still go with Flynn and his 480 yards and 6 Tds over Pryor and his 9 passes.

Prediction: Allen survives the whole season, and the Raiders go something like 3-13, then Mark fires him in the offseason. McKenzie lasts through the end of the 2014 season, and Mark fires HIM in the offseason. And we start all over, yet again.

To top it off, DA hasnt been authoritive in ANYTHING regarding picking a OLine front and letting the best 5 gel together. NO CONTINUITY = NO CHEMISTRY = CRAP OLINE.

A OLine is only as good as the sum of its parts. It’s about working as a unit. Meanwhile he are two weeks from opening day and he still hasnt decided on 5 starters. All in the name of keeping up the facade that every position is a competition. Well, we all knew that was a crock of chit from day one so save us the BS and just go with your guys and let them gel.

No decision on the punter (it’s pretty clear who he should go with, I knew after one play from each and I said as much here. King is the better punter. Kleuwe is the better holder). Go with King, he can always learn to be a better holder.

    No decision on OLIne situation.

And now you expect a timely decision on the QB position?

F that garbage. DA is about as decisive as a 8 month old pregnant chic planning her own wedding.

Best thing about the QB controversy, is it has everyone’s attention away for our pizz poor defensive performances so far… Bad angles, bad tackling technique, and a lack of responsibility setting the edges. Thought this was all supposed to be ” fixable” what gives DA? Tackling is about desire…

First week w/ the what is supposed to be are starting D-line. I’ll wait until after the Indy game to pass judgment on their ability.

And without any further adieu, we have the weekly, Good, Bad and Ugly.

    THE GOOD

The Secondary. The Raider secondary is the one unit that seems to be playing well, and has some depth. And that was without starting Safety Branch out there.

Jacoby Ford. The 60+ yard kick return just booted Josh Cribbs into retirement.

Kevin Burnett. Burnett was the one defender flying around out there, playing both run and pass, even getting a bit of a pass rush.

Pryor the Runner. The 25 yard TD run was quite something to watch. I watched Mike Vick’s lst game as a Pro, and Vick went on a 60 yard run, that was reminiscent of Pryor’s 25 yard TD. Pure athleticism at it’s best, with the will to win.

E—the fifty bucks is about dhb and our WRs.

Surely now that I think Pryor is starting (doubtful), u must think he will make our WRs amazing.

So it’s u who should be worried since u think our qb will be awesome

Hakeem Nicks getting held by a DB, makes a one handed catch 35 yards down the field.

We NEED this type of stuff. Eli threw the ball before any defender could reach him, they could have played me (yes literally me) at LT on that play and it would have not made a difference.

Don’t think I could have made the catch (or throw) however.
