Pryor puts himself in QB picture

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, August 23rd, 2013 at 11:31 pm in Oakland Raiders.

What seemed to be the inevitable ascension of Matt Flynn as the Raiders starting quarterback is now an open question.

Terrelle Pryor thrust himself into the conversation Friday night by bringing the Raiders back from the dead in a 34-26 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears at O.co Coliseum.

Pryor scored on a 25-yard scramble and hit a clutch 19-yard touchdown pass to sixth-round draft pick Nick Kasa as the Raiders rebounded from a 27-3 deficit to get within 27-20 after three quarters.

By the time Matt McGloin took over in the fourth quarter, Pryor had given coach Dennis Allen and offensive coordinator Greg Olson something to think about, as much by Flynn’s struggles as by Pryor’s playmaking ability.

Asked afterward if he would consider Pryor as the potential Week 1 starting quarterback, Allen said, “I think we’ll have to take a look at it. I don’t think Matt played well. Terrelle came in and gave us a spark. I’m not going to make any decisions tonight.’

Flynn was 3-for-6 for 19 yards, had two interceptions _ both on throws that weren’t close _ and was getting resounding boos from the home crowd.

“That’s the game of football,’’ Flynn said. “That’s what happens when you have passionate fans that expect a certain level of performance.’’

Pryor had 37 yards rushing on three carries and completed 7 of 9 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Upon entering the game with 6:52 left in the first half, Pryor also initially struggled. He threw high for for Streater on a third-and-11 play to Rod Streater that should have been intercepted by Bears safety Chris Conte, who dropped the ball.

Late in the half, Pryor’s 26-yard completion to Mychal Rivera set up Sebastian Janikowski for a 58-yard field goal.

In the second half, against the Bears’ second-team defense, Pryor scrambled to his left and lofted a 19-yard jump pass to Streater for a first down. He later raced around right end for the 25-yard score.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 30-yard field goal after a Josh McCown fumble got the Raiders within 27-13, and then the former Raiders quarterback threw an interception to Joselio Hanson, setting up more Pryor heroics.

Sacked for an 11-yard loss earlier in the series, and faced with third-and-16, Pryor threw a perfect seam pass to Kasa at the goal line for the touchdown.

“I just want to go out and compete,’’ Pryor said. “To me, that’s just what I do. That’s how I expect to play. My teammates stepped up and made a lot of plays for me.’’

Neither quarterback was interested in entering a debate as the Raiders begin a short week heading into their final preseason game at Seattle Thursday night.

Flynn, who was the presumptive starter in Seattle last season only to lose the job to Russell Wilson, was asked if he had jeopardized a potential starting position with the Raiders.

“I’m not sure,’’ Flynn said. “I’ll go out, keep busting my tail and look t oplay better. Week No. 3 in in the preseason is not going to affect me in the long run.’’

Said Pryor: “I’m not looking to get into who is going to start. We’ve got a lot of things to fix and we’re going to fix them together.’’

In trailing 27-3 at the end of the first half, the Raiders were actually worse than they were the week before in New Orleans, where they were down 23-7 at halftime. Chicago outgained the Raiders 252 to 92 and a 14-4 edge in first downs.

Quarterback Jay Cutler was 12 of 21 for 142 yards and a 32-yard touchdown to Matt Forte, and Forte also rushed for 76 yards on six carries. Former Raider Michael Bush had scoring runs of 10 yards and one yard.

The first-half highlight for the Raiders was the return to action of cornerback D.J. Hayden, who had not played since last November after rupturing a blood vessel to his heart in a practice at Houston.

Hayden gave up his first completion (a 22-yard pass to Brandon Marshall), made his first tackle and broke up his first pass.

“No question he was rusty,’’ Allen said. “It was good to get him on the field. He got a lot of firsts out of the way tonight.’’

– McGloin, who played the fourth quarter, was 7 of 14 for 128 yards, a 5-yard touchdown to Jamize Olawale and two interceptions.

– Streater went out with a concussion on the 15-yard catch from Pryor in the third quarter. Brice Butler and Usama Young left the game with hamstring strains, and Hanson had a groin injury.

– Janikowski kicked a 58-yard field goal off the dirt at the end of the second half and was wide right in the first half from 49 yards.

– Jacoby Ford raced 62 yards with a kickoff return after Josh Cribbs mishandled his first attempt and fumbled the second, with the Raiders recovering.

– Running back Darren McFadden has a minor shoulder injury and could have played if it were a regular season game, Allen said.

If Pryor starts, his qb career could be done by game four.

  • Just Fire Baby

Why do people kee thinking Cribbs is gone?

Better chance he gets named a team captain then he gets cut.

Ford can’t return punts, and kickoffs aren’t that important anymore.

And coverage (what Cribbs does at a world class level) is the most important of them all.

What if you put in TP, we lose 38-10 and he is awful week 1? You just go to Flynn week 2? It’s a train wreck one week into the season.

    ———-

So that is all the leash that TP has earned? He’s allowed one game and if he doesnt play well against a playoff caliber team then we should expect our front office to give up on him?

Jeez. We sat thru 3 years of Jamarcuss’ crap before throwing in the towel. The Jets have given Sanchez multiple years. Geno will get at least 2-3 years to show his stuff.

Meanwhile TP gets opening day. Or else its time to draft another QB to “develop”.

I dont think Raider fans really know the definition of developing a QB.

  • raideralex99

Two years later … The defence is not fixed.
Hue had the offence in the top 10 in his first year …. all Reggie had to do is fix the defence … instead he made the offence worst and DID NOT do anything to improve the defence.
“In Reggie We Trust” … Still LMFAO at that coined phrase.

  • C2E

Flynn regrettably reminds me of Kolb

  • Just Fire Baby

The Chiefs are going to be awful again.

Not 2-14 getting shutout by Matt Giordano and Dennis Allen awful, but they will be last placed in the division again.

We have finished 3rd in our division (both 8-8 years we finished 3rd in the division based on tiebreakers) I think 5 years in a row.

    Riff,

No, you give Pryor more rope than 1 start………by letting him start later in the year, or at least splitting reps with Flynn in games.

If you roll with TP week 1, could happen, you have to roll with him all year or go to McGloin.

How do you say FLynn is your man for 3 months, then say scratch all that he isn’t, then a couple of months later you say actually yeah he is the man again?

You know locker rooms, they won’t have that at all. Flynn and DA would be dead-men walking.

And without any further adieu, we have the weekly, Good, Bad and Ugly.

    THE GOOD

The Secondary. The Raider secondary is the one unit that seems to be playing well, and has some depth. And that was without starting Safety Branch out there.

Jacoby Ford. The 60+ yard kick return just booted Josh Cribbs into retirement.

Kevin Burnett. Burnett was the one defender flying around out there, playing both run and pass, even getting a bit of a pass rush.

Pryor the Runner. The 25 yard TD run was quite something to watch. I watched Mike Vick’s lst game as a Pro, and Vick went on a 60 yard run, that was reminiscent of Pryor’s 25 yard TD. Pure athleticism at it’s best, with the will to win.
    —–
I like Burnett but he whiffed on Forte’s TD run.

  • SnBG

    Pryor showed more accuracy.
    Better decision making.
    More electricity than Flynnie.
Able to move the offense better than Flynnie.
    Escapability.

    START PRYOR NOW.

  • Raider Riff

DA just announced in his presser that TP wont start next week.

“May” get some time with the 1′s.

Really? That’s the progress we’ve made? DA, eat a dik and go jump off a cliff. Im done with you.

  • http://raiders.com Seymour Bush

    The Bad

The Effort. The effort from the ones was pathetic. And I mean pathetic. That does not bode well for Allen.

Defensive Line. This unit played poorly. No pass rush again. No contain on the outside. Lamar Houston got in his lst work and looked the part. He wasn’t very good in any aspect of the overall defense.

lst Team Offense. This group looked like the gang the couldn’t shoot straight. Receivers running wrong routes, blitz pickup non-existent, poor Oline blocking, poor QB play, this is a plethora of dis unity. After getting sacked, Olson wisely calls a draw. Good play call. Problem is it’s a jail break, and Jennings runs right into Richard Gordon. And still gets seven yards. Dismal.

Pretty simple. He’s the guy. Not one game. Not one season. Build your franchise around him for the next 3-5 years and reap the rewards.

    ————

    Because that isnt the case.

He’s actually going to still have TP splitting reps with Flynnterception during practice. And that is a best case scenario for TP.

Flynnterception will start vs Seattle and be given one more chance to earn his job back. And this is why we F’N HATE DENNIS ALLEN.

And even when he finally goes with TP, is he every truly going to commit and give the kid his all? Is he ever going to say, “were with you kid, thru thick and thin, Im going to help you get to the next level by any means necessary”…. no way DA says that.

The moment TP gets the job, DA and Reggie will be planning on how they can get their “traditional” QB behind center. Whomever that may be. McGloin, Wilson, or the next horrible FA/trade transplant.

    THE UGLY

Raider Fans. While I don’t have a problem with the fans booing at the end of the lst quarter, (it was that bad), the fact that when the team announced the offense to begin the game, Raider fan didn’t cheer anyone other than Marcel Reece. When Flynn’s name was announced you could hear a little child coughing in the upper deck. Clearly, the fans are only behind Pryor, and that is unfortunate and bound to get even uglier.

Pryor’s Jump Pass to Streator. While you do admire Pryor’s ability to escape, his jump passes are kind of silly. And when I mean silly, I mean silly for the 8th grade. They are absolutely ridiculous for the NFL. And again, when something good happens when he does it, he is not going to learn, and will relapse into horrible fundamentals. His fluttery jump pass to Streator not only was a completion, but it knocked Streator out of the game and possibly longer. One of my criticisms of Pryor is he throws bad passes even on completions. This is one that got Streator killed, and came right after his lst completion, which got Richard Gordon rocked pretty good as well. And if you think I am off base on this, remember the pass Jamarcus Russell threw to Chokie Lee that essentially ended his Chokie Lee’s career?

    2013 Season. Enuff said.

  • Just Fire Baby

Flynn and Seabass came out for the Dallas game.

They haven’t announced captains yet. It kind of is an official thing.

  • Myopinion

Flynn was brought in to compete, never once has rm or da said he is definite starter, just gave him first opportunity. They both look worse if they dont play the best guy. They lose 80% of the fanbase before snap 1,and you know the team knows tp is better. Tp is a young first year starter, he should be treated the way. Until he really proves he doesnt deserve it. Flynn has proven incapable to everyone, I dare rm and da to treat us like idiots and be wrong. Then at 0and 4or 5tp comes in and lights it up. Flynn as a vet mentor, backup is not a stupid move, maybe a few mil too much, but do u want tp and two rookies. carol didnt agree with that logic either.
