Coach Allen in no hurry to name starting QB

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, August 24th, 2013 at 6:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The restless contingent that feels as if Terrelle Pryor seized the starting quarterback job from Matt Flynn is going to have to wait awhile longer to find out if Raiders coach Dennis Allen arrives at the same conclusion.

Allen said Saturday that his deadline for deciding between Pryor and Flynn is “sometime before the first game” Sept. 8, when the Raiders play the Indianapolis Colts in the regular-season opener.

In the interim, Allen said, Pryor will get more reps with the first-team offense in practice in the run up to the Raiders exhibition finale against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night as a result of how well he played against the Chicago Bears on Friday night.

Allen said he hasn’t decided yet who is going to start against the Seahawks and whether both will play. Flynn started Oakland’s first three exhibition games, with Pryor the first of the three other quarterbacks on the roster off the bench all three times.

Projected starters typically play little, if any, in the final exhibition game. However, it’s conceivable that Allen will play both Thursday and use their performance as a final piece of the evaluation process before settling upon a starter.

Watching the tape of the Raiders 34-26 loss to the Chicago Bears on Friday night didn’t do anything to change Allen’s initial assessment, he said.

“Terrelle came in and really added a spark to us offensively,” Allen said. “He moved us down the field; he was able to put some points on the board, so that was really good to see out of him.”

Pryor completed 7 or 9 passes for 93 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 37 yards, including 25 on a run that yielded another touchdown.

Flynn completed 3 of 6 throws for 19 yards and no touchdowns. Two of his passes were intercepted. He also fumbled a snap.

“I don’t think Matt played as well as he or we would have liked for him to play,” Allen said.

Most teams long ago decided their starting quarterback. Even so, it’s not unprecedented for teams to take this long to name a starter.

Naturally, Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie would prefer to have a clear-cut starter at the most important position. That’s simply not the case as a result of the way Flynn and Pryor played since training camp started, in particular against the Bears.

“We got to continue to get better, we got to keep moving forward,” Allen said, “and that’s a position that we’re still continuing to evaluate.”

– Rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden “was a little rusty” in his Raiders debut, Allen said. “You could tell it was his first time he played in a football game in awhile.”

Hayden played Friday night for the first time since he suffered a near-fatal injury last November during a practice for the University of Houston.

– Wide receiver Rod Streater won’t be back on the practice field until he passes the mandatory tests for players that suffer a concussion. He suffered his against the Bears.

– Allen said neither Chris Kluwe nor Marquette King “really punted the ball all that great” against the Bears. Kluwe has an edge over King as a holder on field-goal and extra-point attempts and “that will have something to do with the decision we make.”

– Rookie quarterback Tyler Wilson was slated to get some playing time against the Bears, Allen said. Things changed when fellow rookie Matt McGloin played well during his time, and Allen wanted to take a longer look at McGloin.

– Allen said he expects projected starting cornerback Tracy Porter (groin) back at practice Sunday, though in a limited capacity.

– Tight end David Ausberry (shoulder) is showing signs of improvement, and he has a chance to be back in time for the season-opening game, Allen said.

Romania should not be allowed to post anymore…..he doesn’t read enough on the situations of all three teams to even comment

Warriors will go to SF when pigs fly. But yet you wouldn’t know because you follow idiot ass Joe Lacob who is trying to save face. Residents in SF and other commissions hold his fate and they are pissed he even tried to pull a slick move on them. READ MORE SON! Go find out who Fred Blackwell is first kid. He works for Oakland now and use to work in SF trying to get stuff built in place like Pier 30/32….not gonna happen. What are they gonna do? Lot A next to Giants? HAHAHAHA. A part Dodgers owner is the money man for the Warriors…so use your brain there! Civic Center? Traffic is an issue there as with every other place in SF. No place works in SF. They will be stay in Oakland for quite a while but yet you dont read so you missed that one

A’s to the South Bay? Fk’n when? Go ask Chris Townsend of 95.7 the Game. He lives in SJ and watch what he tells you. Big announcement soon coming about A’s and playing by Jack London Square. Its in reference to funding and all of that good stuff. SJ has no legal standing, no land for a ballpark site and no damn stadium. Many citizens in SJ are Giants fans and dont want the A’s. MLB is now pissed with city for the lawsuit so now the lodge will flex their power on them. Dumbest move ever lol. Plus MLB will take a waterfront venue in the most central part of NorCal than some place in a very bland downtown where majority of Bay area people do not venture. You need to read more son!

If you didn’t know I shall help you son….a 3rd investor is jumping in on the Coliseum City effort from what I’m told. Won’t say from where but months ago I heard about the possibility of investors from that region and let me say that’s long money and those ppl aren’t afraid to invest near the SCARY ghettos here in a America.

Also a good buddy of mine who is into the stuff and in the mix on alot of things I cant share met with one of the architects for a Raider stadium and further explained the 56,500 seat venue plan…actually thats a low ball figure if they had NO corporate support but we all know they’ll at least have some with a new venue so the reality is it will be somewhere over the 60K range.

Flynn – Outscored by opponents 51-10 in 3 preseason games. 2 Scoring Drives (Only TD against Prevent D). I counted 9 sacks other articles say 7, either way it’s disgusting. 2 INTs. 2 Fumbles. 13 possessions more than half have been 3&Outs.

TP – Outscored opponents 30-10 (And Had 1 TD called back on a bogus holding, and then the boneheaded INT). 6 Scoring Drives ( Should have been 7). 2 sacks…out of the pocket while looking down field to make a play. 1 horrible INT. 0 Fumbles. 10 possession and 1 3&Out (I think).

This isn’t a QB competition. It’s a slaughter. Opposing teams know it. Fans know it. Most of the coaches know it. And everyone on the team knows it.

TP is the best chance we have at maybe being a competitive squad this year.

  • alex7

Kyle Moore, DE, cut from Bears.

4th rounder from last year (hey, good teams whiff on draft picks!) Had a sack vs us last week.

  • zopi

If Junior and Mac Zar are having second thoughts on both Flynn and TP is not because of the fans or the bloggers, it’s because of what he and everyone else sees on the field. If Pryor was just about “street ball,” he would have been gone long time ago.
Why the hate? Is my question.

why do you compare what other starting offenses do to our defense as some type of testament to our QB’s ability?

    Bizarre.

Brees is 30 points better than our D, Cutler is 30 points better than our D, and you use this to judge our QBs? Weird.

As I’ve told you the folks in downtown LA wants nada to do with that element ever again but yet yall doubt the my words. Why did Raiders get rid of alot of Raider Image stores in SoCal if they are going in 2014?

You have liars on here saying they had higher attendance in LA or had more fans in LA. Also you lie and say the games in Oakland have more fans from SoCal than anything else…wow another damn lie as I go to every game. Here ya go

When you address me it’s Daddy first of all.

Now junior let me explain to you a little about the game.

There are these things called points. Points determine who wins and loses.

QBs are responsible for putting points on the board. Which also prevents the other team from scoring simultaneously.

    Understand? Both are connected.

    Facts are facts Roberta.

And just like MR you betted that the Raiders would lose and were happy they lost…typical 49er…just like all his aliases…you wont show up at a game

  • alex7

In 1991, the 49ers and Raiders drew 92,000+ in the L.A. Coliseum.

    That was awesome.

  • inonewordraider

Again, Greg Olsen, Dennis Allen and Reggie McKenzie are not going to turn the franchise over to some guy playing street ball. That ain’t gonna happen. If it was that easy, you wouldn’t need a McKenzie, Allen or Olsen. You could just find some athletic kid, have him run around, hopefully make some plays and save $8mm in coach and GM salaries. But It doesn’t work that way. And if Moore is going to run the wrong route for Flynn, he is going to run the wrong route for Pryor. Same with McFadden. But bottom line, at least Pryor is out there competing to win. That is something the starting ones didn’t seem interested in doing.

    ___________
I like your takes Seymour, but if you can’t see the spark that pryor provides along with the fact he extends the play which is VITAL with our oline in disarray, then I don’t know what to say

also, it’s evident that pryor has a higher ceiling. better arm, much better runner obviously, and a big kid so better able to avoid the injury like rgIII.

flynn had a horrible game at a critical time. pryor will take his lumps and have horrible games, but he moves the ball down the field, buys time, has improved leaps and bounds and will continue to do so.

I just hope everyone’s being impartial because what’s most important is what’s best for the team

  • Follow the B@uceman

Flynn is just not starting calibre.. I think it’s been pretty well established by now.

  • Cervantes74

Roberta is a 9ers fan. Always has been. Always will be.

    Who’s your Daddy Roberta?

Please keep posting incessantly (that means without stopping) how Flynn is a better QB than TP.

    He definitely is…

In the sense that he’s plays the game like a coward, turning the ball over, unable to produce 1st downs, unable to score, pissing his teammates off by checking down for a 2 yard completion on 3rd and 5, and having the body language of a guy you’d love to drive into the ground.

    He’s amazing in that sense.

er, it makes it harder for Indy to game plan if he waits until near game day to name the starter.

That’s cuz it’s a pure DA genius ploy. Keep them guessing, like the rest of the Raiders. Neither Pryor nor Flynn ought to be well prepared when they also don’t know. Great job DA.
