Raiders cut Cribbs, waive nine others

Return specialist and special teams player Josh Cribbs was the most notable of the first 10 players cut by the Raiders Sunday.

Cribbs mishandled two kickoffs in a 36-24 loss to the Chicago Bears, muffing the first before picking it up, with the Raiders getting a break on the second when officials ruled him to be down before the ball was lost.

Returning from offseason knee surgery, Cribbs was never able to show the kind of burst that resulted in eight career returns for touchdowns. Presumably, it was affecting his ability to cover kicks as well, another reason he was added to the roster.

The decision was made easier when Jacoby Ford flashed some of his pre-injury form, racing 62 yards with a kickoff after Cribbs appeared to be running in mud on the first two.

As a vested veteran, Cribbs had his contract terminated and he is free to sign with any team.

Players who were waived by the Raiders were linebacker Keenan Clayton, linebacker Eric Harper, fullback Jon Hoese, wide receiver Sam McGuffie, guard Andrew Robiski, wide receiver Tray Session, defensive tackle Myles Wade and wide receiver Isiah Williams.

In addition, center/guard Alex Parsons thanked the Raiders for the “opportunity to play the game I love’’ on his Twitter account. Parsons, who did not play because of injury against Chicago, is likely working out an injury settlement with the team.

Assuming Parsons is no longer on the roster, the Raiders have four more cuts to make to get to the limit of 75 players. Rosters must be at 53 on Saturday, two days after Thursday’s preseason finale in Seattle.

– As the players opened their first team session Sunday, Terrelle Pryor was at quarterback and Menelik Watson at left tackle.

– Players who were working with the athletic training staff and not on the field were strong safety Tyvon Branch (ribs), wide receiver Brice Butler (hamstring) and wide receiver Rod Streater (concussion).

– Players who were suited up and on the field included cornerback Tracy Porter (groin), free safety Usama Young (hamstring) and wide receiver Juron Criner (undisclosed injury).

    Pryor should have been named the QB when last season ended and the money and pick wasted on Flynn should have been used on the O-line.

    why would they have named Pryor the starting QB and not even TRIED to upgrade?

    Pryor was 8-22 against San Diego after 3 quarters, and showed the same bad habits (floating passes, staring down receivers, turnovers…)

    Give them credit for at least trying to improve it with limited draft picks and no salary cap.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Great.

    Here we have a guy who has only played the game at the college level for three semesters with one semester at junior college and who has played RT, so the coaches play him at LT.

    You got Barnes, who played LT most of his career, now playing at RT;
    Wiz, who played LG most of his college career now playing center;
    and Watson, a RT playing at LT.

    ===

    A LOT of OL end up playing different positions in the NFL than they played in college. On college teams with thinner talent, the best guys get moved where they are most needed, even if it’s not their natural (NFL level) position. For example, you see a lot of college LTs moved to RT in the NFL, and a lot of RTs moved to OG.

    I’m all for the Raiders figuring out where these guys project for the long haul and getting them play time there in this development year.

    The funny/ironic thing is that you have people that think Pryor is the best option despite his obvious flaws because he might as well learn on the job this season. Yet when it’s another position, especially one that god forbid, might impact Pryor’s chances, that’s not OK.

    Memo to the Brigade:

    Pryor is not RGII, Luck or Newton. He’s not a high first round pick that they are going to tailor the offense to for the long haul. They are going to put in place the offense that they want for the long haul and try the players that project into that when the time is right. Olsen will make short term adjustments to match the talent, but not wholesale changes that are predicated on the unlikely success of a non-franchise type player.

    He’s not going to short circuit the development of one position to help another. In fact, the more cerebral people on here consisting are saying build the lines first and the rest second. So if getting Watson reps now means a better line in 2014 and beyond, then sorry Flynn or Pryor, that’s the right path.

    Don’t agree. What would have killed Reggie’s credibility would have been to name Pryor the starter after an unimpressive first two years. Particularly when Pryor was the only QB on the roster at the time. If Veldheer doesn’t go down, and Pryor doesn’t improve so dramatically, than Flynn would have been the clear cut starter.

    I give Reggie and DA credit for doing what they can to fix what’s going on. Unfortunately, football isn’t played in a bubble.

    My best explanation for Pryor as the presumed “starter” for week 4 of preseason:

    They need to see what he can do against #1s. They’ve already seen it with Flynn, and it ain’t pretty. Pryor has a chance to look better or not and help with the decision making. They also need to see how Pryor helps an over matched OL or not when facing the same stacked deck Flynn has been facing.

    Most people seem to be forgetting the Pryor ain’t done squat against a #1 defense, even though he’s only had a few shots at it. It makes sense to get him one more. And he’s getting the luxury of the last shot, which means it’s the one where the offense has had the most reps to clean up the major flaws (aka RBs missing obvious blitz assignment). If he blows it here, he has nobody else to blame.

    So what happens if Pryor goes out and gets dominated by Seattle’s starters and the Flynn lights it up with the #2s? Based on this blog’s what have you done for me lately thinking, that would automatically make Flynn the starter I guess.

    In fact, I would love for DA to come out and name Pryor the starter today for the Seattle game. Let Seattle game plan their #1s against him after watching film on his lock-onto-a-single-target tendencies and limited set of plays. And don’t forget, Seattle easily shut down the whiners gimmick pistol crap and showed the rest of the league how to be disciplined in your assignments. Pryor either get shut down in his read-option package or forced to run the “real” offense, where he applies his single read approach to a complex multi-read WCO.

    And if he fails, the Brigade will already have a slew of excuses cued up about it not being fair to the guy that had his number changed to better reflect his IQ.
