Maiava back at practice for Raiders

Linebacker Kaluka Maiava, out with an ankle injury since late July, returned to practice Monday for the Raiders.

Although the Raiders appear set as far as starting linebackers with Nick Roach in the middle, Kevin Burnett on the weak side and rookie Sio Moore on the strong side, Maiava provides depth at all three positions and has value on special teams.

Also returning to practice was strong safety Tyvon Branch (ribs), although it remains to be seen if he will play when the Raiders visit the Seattle Seahawks Thursday night in their final preseason game.

Players who weren’t practicing included wide receivers Brice Butler (hamstring) and Rod Streater (concussion).

The Raiders had no transactions to announce as practice began and still must trim four players from the roster to get to 75 players. The big cut comes Saturday, when teams must get to 53 players.

Not really sure you’re going to get that this week. Most starters will not play this week.

“OK fellas, screw the QB’s. What the hell is gonna happen to our OLine??”

    WOW someone who gets it!

We will need a Kevlar suit for Pryor and I am thinking about covering him in Crisco to avoid a solid hit.

Maybe one of those amour suits would help him make it to week 8!

Well if there is a Flynnjury (c), and Pryor (#2) starts, at least it will be the best comedy going.

Jump passes. Freak-out endzone picks. Deafening silence in the stands by halftime of the first game. And blog comedy at the expense of y’all.

    It’s a win-win.

  • J Hill

If he did, our best WR wouldn’t have a concussion.

    —————————————————————————

    That’s ridiculous.

    Using that logic….

If Flynn doesn’t check down, Ausberry doesn’t hurt his shoulder.

If Palmer doesn’t throw a strike to DHB against Pitts, DHB doesn’t get beheaded by the safety.

You have to admit TP was lucky that the Bear defender didn’t hit him low.

Exciting play and great result to salvage something out of nothing, but not something you want to see TP doing if you want to keep him in one piece.

Pryor has yet to play against any starters, it doesn’t matter he is still light years ahead of Flynn. In fact there are guys in the Arena League that are better than Flynn.

Until we get that o-line fixed and get some WR’s who can run precise routes and hold on to the ball our offense wont see much improvement.

Pryor cant play Defense or Special Teams so I am not sure what folks expect but hey we can all dream right!

    Pryor v Flynn

Flynn has played 13 drives over three games and has turned the ball over more than he has scored with a lost fumble in the opener and two interceptions against the Bears compared to one field goal drive against Dallas and an end-of-half touchdown in New Orleans. The Raiders have averaged 3.7 yards per play with Flynn at quarterback.

Oakland has scored on more than half of Pryor’s 10 drives this preseason with two touchdowns and four field goals compared to just one turnover on an end-zone interception on Pryor’s first drive of the preseason. The offense is averaging 5.7 yards per play with Pryor in the game.

Pryor learned from that mistake when he threw a ball into coverage instead of running and played his best football as a pro in five drives against the Bears.

  • Ghosttoothepost

COMMENTARY | Matt Flynn was awful Friday night. But he wasn’t just awful — he was painfully awful.

As a matter of fact, he was so awful that the home crowd drowned him in “boos” before the first half was even over. At that point, the Oakland Raiders trailed the Chicago Bears 27-0.

It can’t be all that surprising. After all, the crowd’s not going to cheer for you when you’re only 3 of 6 for 19 yards and throw two interceptions.

The crowd wanted Terrelle Pryor, the exciting, raw, athletic freak who the Raiders plan to use a lot more this year — and probably even more now after Flynn stunk up the O.co Coliseum.

To be fair, Flynn got absolutely no help from his sorry excuse of an offensive line. It’s nearly impossible to get anything going when you have less than two seconds to get rid of the ball.

But the fact of the matter is that nobody, except for general manager Reggie McKenzie, was ever sold on Flynn in the first place.

He’s never proven a thing since he’s been in the NFL. He’s made two starts in five years, and the one that got everybody going was a meaningless Week 17 game two years ago.

Yes, it was meaningless. And it was against a horrendous Detroit Lions secondary. Yet, after that game where he threw six touchdowns, he became one of the hottest tickets in free agency talk. He was so hot that the Seattle Seahawks were willing to make him their future.

But as history would show, that would not last long.

Now, Flynn is in serious danger of losing his presumptive staring job for the second year in a row. Granted, Russell Wilson wasn’t your average rookie, but Flynn has yet to do anything that’s blown anyone away.

Kevin Kolb, anybody? The similarities are all-too identical.

Kolb had some decent games in Philadelphia once upon a time ago, and everyone thought he was going to be the next big thing. Well, he wasn’t.

He got a huge contract from the Arizona Cardinals in 2011 after the Eagles decided to make Michael Vick their guy. During Kolb’s two years in the desert, he turned the ball over 20 times while throwing just 17 touchdowns.

Not exactly the next big thing.

Now, he may no longer have an NFL career after suffering a concussion over the weekend against the Washington Redskins.

But unlike Kolb, Flynn hasn’t disappointed to that level yet. But that’s only because he’s never actually won the starting job.

After all, you have get the starting job and then be bad in order to fully disappoint.

Flynn will always come with baggage if Pryor steals his job in Oakland. He’ll always be remembered as the guy who lost his starting job twice in two years before the season even started.

Nobody wants to be that guy. Unfortunately, Pryor is the more exciting player who possesses the athleticism to deal with Oakland’s putrid line.

Flynn is a traditional pocket passer who looks like a fish out of water trying to hurry his passes before he’s slammed to the ground in a matter of seconds. Just like Kolb.

Neither quarterback is going to lead any team to greatness. They’ll both try their hardest, but they’ll still come up short at the end of the day.

Just don’t tell that to the general managers who blindly overpaid for their less-than-mediocre services.

The true quarterback always comes out in the end. Unfortunately, for Kevin Kolb and Matt Flynn, everyone else is seeing that firsthand.

Hey looks like we will see what Pryor has that`s a good thing especially with this team if any team to succeed with it would be this one. He just learned to throw the ball properly why is that a bad thing? that just shows he is working you can`t teach heart and passion for a game check his interview on Raiders.Com remind me funny to say of a young Mike Tyson when he had his passion for Boxing. the boy has 1 year left on contract after this we need to see what we have if anything I am not saying I am all riding on pryor`s jock but as a Raider for life have to see what we have the guy did when 2 chapionships at Ohio can`t teach that also Cam, Kap, RG3, Wilson ect.. have not exsactly blew everyone`s minds..Not mine anyways there`s know reason our QB can`t be just as good…

The funny thing about the Pryor Flyers is nothing they say makes sense. First they wanted Pryor to get a chance. Now in this game, they want him pulled early. They said he has earned it, but he is one of the worst passers in the league. STILL! Fascinating Captain.

I have said two things from the beginning: he would make a better WR than a Q, and if it were me, I would start him in the Regular Season Game 1, unless he was sooooooo horrible you couldn’t do it in good conscience, or two, Flynn was soooooo lights out, you couldn’t do that in good conscience. So, I am sticking to my guns. Start him in the regular season game 1. Let’s see how he does against bona fide NFL ones, who have an opportunity to game plan him. Then, we can begin to get a true evaluation of him. And one of two things are going to happen: 1) either he will rise to the occassion, excel, and we will have our Q for the next 10 years or 2) he will turn into Terrelle Pryor and Flynn can come in and manage the team like he was hired to do. I am not seeing a lot of downside to that plan…
