Final: Seahawks 22, Raiders 6

Terrelle Pryor failed to make coach Dennis Allen’s decision on a starting quarterback any easier Thursday night.

Pryor showed the running skills that make him such an intriguing option but struggled with his passing in a 22-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason finale for both teams at CenturyLink Field.

The Raiders, 1-3 in the preseason, managed only field goals of 45 and 37 yards from Justin Medlock with Pryor at quarterback in the first half and looked to be a team a long way from finding itself with the regular-season opener in Indianapolis looming Sept. 8.

Seattle, 4-0, passed at will for much of the night against Raiders starters and reserves.

Chances are that before Allen makes the call on whether Pryor or sore-armed Matt Flynn is the starting quarterback, he’ll first turn his attention to cutting 22 players from the roster to the mandatory 53 on Saturday.

Pryor’s time was limited because the Raiders couldn’t move the ball and the defense couldn’t stop Seattle. Part of the reason Oakland had a 20:24 to 9:36 disadvantage in time of possession was the inability to get first downs through the air.

Starting quarterback Russell Wilson completed 3 of 3 passes for 68 yards ins setting up a 2-yard run by Robert Turbin on the opening drive, then took the rest of the night off. Backup Tarvaris Jackon was 12-for-17 for 199 yards and got the Seahawks in position for three field goals by Steven Hauscka.

Hauscka ended up kicking five field goals from distances of 56, 22, 51, 43 and 53 yards.

When the first half ended, Pryor was 3 of 8 for 31 yards and one interception with a miniscule passer rating of 9.9. The good things Pryor did came with his legs, as he set up Medlock’s first field goal with a 25-yard scramble and added a 17-yard bootleg late in the second half to help set up the second one.

Pryor’s last drive, although it produced points, came in an unusual two-minute drill which found the Raiders driving 61 yards for three points and failed to gain even a yard through the air.

After Hauschka kicked the third of three first-half field goals for a 16-3 lead, the Raiders took over at their own 20 with 3:59 left.

Rashad Jennings promptly ripped of runs of 9 and 32 yards to the Seattle 39. On first-and-10, Pryor, with the line blocking, right, took off on a bootleg to his left for 17 yards to the Seattle 22.

Following a 2-yard run by Jennings, the Seahawks failed to fall for a Pryor playfake, with Jeron Johnson and Bruce Irvin forcing him out of bounds for a 5-yard loss. Pryor scrambled for six yards on 1-and-13, with Medlock coming in for the conversion.

There was precious little for Raider fans to be optimistic about, but Oakland was stout against the run in the first half, holding Seattle to 34 yards on 17 carries, with Pat Sims often playing behind the line and disrupting Seahawks blocking schemes.

Left tackle Menelik Watson, playing into the third quarter in his first game as a left tackle after just one padded practice, had no penalties and no glaring errors. . One of the two sacks of Pryor came to Watson’s side on a play where the quarterback ran into the pressure.

– Jennings had 53 yards on six carries in the first half, with Allen opting to rest Darren McFadden for the final preseason game. Also sitting it out was free safety Charles Woodson. Young was in coverage when Wilson threw a 50-yard pass to Stephen Williams on the first drive.

– Wide receiver Brice Butler did not make the trip because of a hamstring injury and Sio Moore, bothered by a toe injury of late, also did not play.

– Mike Brisiel, who has struggled with his knee of late, played as the second-team right guard in the second half behind starter Lucas Nix.

– Rookie defensive end David Bass, a seventh-round draft pick, got good pressure and had one sack erased by a defensive holding penalty by linebacker Kaelin Burnett.

x– It was the eighth consecutive year the Raiders have ended the preseason against the Seahawks. Seattle has won seven times, with the only Raiders win coming 23-16 in the only game played between the two teams in Oakland in 2010.

– In the first half of last three preseason games, the Raiders have scored 16 points.

– Former Raiders special teams standout Derrick Jensen was honored as the “`12th Man’’ by the Seahawks before the game and was also given a framed Raiders jersey with his No. 31.

A member of the Seahawks scouting staff for 21 years before his retirement, Jensen is best remembered as a Raider for blocking a punt and recovering it for a touchdown against the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII.

Jensen was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 2011 and was honored at a function Wednesday night that included former teammates such as quarterback Jim Plunkett.

    Hey Slop,

If Pryor starts, you have no chance because we will basically be just like the Broncos with Tebow.

Good thing is Pyor is a better athlete, and slightly better passer.

If we ever find a D. We could start winning 13-10 games.
    *******
Good thing Flynn is the starter.

And a top ten one at that.

I got $100 that syas Flynn is not Top Ten.

Put your money your fat mouth is, Slop.

    Bet?

Its a deep Qb draft next year. The thing is.. When and if u draft a qb.. do u want DENNIS ALLEN to coach him..or do u want to bring in a new offensive HC to go with him?? HMMM

  • RaiderKenny24

Glad pre-season is done. Cuts, final roster and on to the regular season. It’s gonna be great! Ugh…

Oh and BTW,I watched every snap of the South Carolina vs.UNC game…and give Clowney a C-. He looked okay, obviously got double teamed alot, but wasn’t around the ball, zero sacks and looked gassed after the first quarter.

Todd McShay was harsh on him for his apparent weak conditioning and taking himself off the field so much (which he did). Ger conditioned Clowney, can’t be a #1 overall pick at d-lineman for a guy who can’t play 4 downs IMO.

  • rediaR

Holmes will stick just because he doesn’t count against the roster until his suspension is over. That might be plenty of time for someone to earn their way off the team.

  • the famous dr robert

Rediar—Aus still struggles with blocking. The coaches are intent in getting blocking AND receiving out of that position.

E—it’s preseason. Moore had the sweet Td. He will have at least 8.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

If the Raiders are looking for a QB to follow a consistent game plan, that would probably be Flynn.

But I think Allen and his staff are close to concluding that Flynn just isn’t talented enough to give them their best chance to win games.

Well, pootbutt, you got ambitious and tried to preload revisionist takes on what Reggie, DA, and Flores said and got your ass handed to you each time.
I know you desperately wanted a Chicago repeat and the warm glow of knowing Pryor was likely the starter, and maybe he will be, but you’ll just have to wait like the rest of us for that decision.

I’m not ready to sound the death knell just yet. Some of our Defensive starters are just getting back from injury and our some of our key Offensive starters did not even play.

Want to see all the starters on O and D in Indy.
I have a feeling Indy is going to take a big step back this year without B. Arians. They sucked last year when Pagano took back the job.

    Can’t do much with him.

  • rediaR

Streater and Butler should start. Pryor should mis in with them. Jenkins should be the returner and backup WR. Moore should go in every once in a while and just run down field with the hope that a ball might cross his path. Ford should be sold for scrap. Criner should be around I guess. Vernon should be PS.

The same Ford that made two nice catch and runs for McGloin tonight?
    ********************
Yea and dropped a three yard pass. I admit was slightly low, but catchable, on a 3rd down to stall the drive.

Sorry Moore & Jacoby didn’t impress me at all.

    ====

Jacoby didn’t impress you when Pryor was in the game or for the whole game? Because he made two nice plays with McGloin throwing. The only other pass thrown his way was Pryor’s underthrown pass that was an easy TD for him with a quicker read and reaction.

Mastrud dropped that three yard pass on 3 and 3. It was drilled into his ankles with a LB hanging on his back. I don’t fault him at all for that. A better QB would’ve either found another option. Pryor had plenty of time in the pocket but locked onto Mastrud, which is one of the reasons that LB closed on him so fast, as he was likely watching Pryor’s eyes. A great QB would’ve made that throw between the numbers in a way that Mastrud had no choice but to catch it.

Pryor did neither of those. He can’t think fast enough under pressure to make those decisions.
