How Raiders roster breaks down

Keeping in mind the Raiders could still do a lot of tinkering with the roster once they sift through veteran players and the waiver process, here is the current makeup of the 53-man roster:

Quarterbacks (4): Terrelle Pryor, Matt Flynn, Matt McGloin, Tyler Wilson.

Comment: Many NFL teams are going with two quarterbacks and the Raiders have four. McGloin moved ahead of Wilson, and the Raiders were wary of cutting a fourth-round draft pick.

Running backs (5): Darren McFadden, Rashad Jennings, Jeremy Stewart, Marcel Reece, Jamize Olawale.

Comment: McFadden played sparingly in the preseason, and Jennings was far and away the most consistent runner. Stewart gets the nod with Latavius Murray on injured reserve. Reece is the Raiders most versatile back while Olawale has special teams value and is strong blocker.

Wide receivers (5): Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore, Brice Butler, Rod Streater, Juron Criner.

Comment: No real surprises here.

Tight ends (4): Jeron Mastrud, Mychal Rivera, David Ausberry, Nick Kasa

Comment: Mastrud beats out Richard Gordon for the starting role unless Ausberry is healthy in time for the opener. Rookies Rivera and Kasa are the safest here because the Raiders will be looking hard at the waiver wire for a veteran or two.

Offensive linemen (8): Stefen Wisniewski, Andre Gurode, Mike Brisiel, Jared Veldheer, Khalif Barnes, Menelik Watson, Lucas Nix, Alex Barron.

Comment: The Raiders will be looking to add a lineman or two. Chances are Jared Veldheer goes on injured reserve/designated to return on Tuesday, meaning he misses seven weeks. That will open up a roster spot. Losing Tony Bergstrom to injured reserve has the Raiders looking hard at guards.

Defensive linemen (8): Ryan Robinson, Pat Sims, Jack Crawford, Stacy McGee, Jason Hunter, Christo Bilukidi, Vance Walker, Lamarr Houston.

Comment: The surprise was the rise of Ryan Robinson, who did some good things rushing the passer and makes the club for now as an undrafted free agent.

Linebackers (5): Kaluka Maiava, Nick Roach, Sio Moore, Kevin Burnett, Kaelin Burnett.

Comment: Oh, brothers. Kevin and Kaelin Burnett are both on the 53-man roster.

Defensive backs (10) : Mike Jenkins, Taiwan Jones, Charles Woodson, D.J. Hayden, Usama Young, Phillip Adams, Brandian Ross, Tracy Porter, Tyvon Branch, Chimdi Chekwa,

Comment: Jones makes the roster as a cornerback after being a running back for two years, but his real value is on special teams where he excels kick coverage.

Specialists (4): P Chris Kluwe, P Marquette King, PK Sebastian Janikowski, LS Jon Condo.

Comment: Two punters? Chances are the Raiders are looking to trade Kluwe or King.

@RaidersBeat: Winning games is everything. 49ers cut first-round WR, and its mostly crickets. #Raiders cut 4th-round QB, and the sky is falling.
    =================================
Seattle cut their second and third round pick from last year think what that must’ve cost and the sky is not falling in Seattle

if we were12 and 4 team nobody would think anything of it since were a bottom feeder

Reggie was trying to get a pick for Kluwe and Wilson.

Just picking up new guys anyway.

If a team does they have to put him on the 53 site unseen and waive someone.

Doubtful that will happen, teams will try to sell him on their PS as we do.

I look at this roster and I don’t know whether to laugh ot cry.

    Serious question:

If the RAIDS were to cut the ENTIRE roster – which players would be picked up by other teams ?

    Name them.

OK, you came up with what ? About 25 names ? I think some are debatable, but let’s assume all of them would be picked up. That leaves about half the roster being comprised of guys that might not make another squad, right ?

Like DJ said – there’s some guys that make another roster – probably not many start.

A guy like Streater probably makes most rosters – there’s little chance he’d be in consideration to be a nbr1, like he is here.

When you go thru the list of names you came up with, there’s not many guys that definitely start on other teams.

DMAC, if he’s healthy. V, who is out. Branch, solid but not great. Wiz, good. Reece has been productive.

Some of the others MIGHT start.

Many of the names are rookies that havent proven anything.

There’s no proven, stand out talent, virtually anywhere on this roster.

Jani. Condo. DMAC of 2 years ago.

    That’s about it.

It’s so deficient in certain areas as to be laughable.

Pass rushing DE ? ‘Go to #1′ WR ? Uggh.

And of course, there’s the elephant in the room – the uncertainty at QB.

You look at this roster individually, and break it down unit by unit, and it’s not very good.

    That’s being kind.

Most would say it’s among the weakest in the NFL.

    Some would say it’s pathetic.

Going to be a long year.

Truthfully though, doesn’t bother me that much. I expected this.

Still looking forward to the season. I find watching and debating the ‘rebuild’ process very interesting.
    ===================================================
Another excellent post. I keep saying, the only way to look at this year ( and maintain your sanity) is as a prelude to 2014, our true 1st year of rebuilding.

eventually some semis in here are going to have to understand the difference between RM signing players for “value” versus signing players who become “valuable”. Its a skill that the good gms have. Reggie has signed alot of “value” contracts, but none that have turned into “valuable”. Its a flaw that is a major pause for concern.
Briesel and Flynn have been RM biggest signings, 2 disasters

DA made his decision on the starting QB in the Bears game. He wasn’t looking for Pryor to set the world on fire in Seattle. He wanted to know if, in the worst of circumstances, would Pryor revert to his bad habits as a QB. I believe DA is doing a good job as head coach. Throughout preseason he has put every facet of our starters on an island at some point, so far. At no time have all of our starters been in a game together yet. That leaves a lot of tape for Indy to study this week. DA is using the element of surprise to shade the weaknesses on this team. Unlike many others, I’m not ready to throw in the towel. No matter what, I’m a Raider fan, period…….and I really hope I’m right.

  • 0ak r8rs

Kluwe gone. I guess the Jags left us some scraps. Can’t wait to see what they are. I hope it’s Dwyer and a DL.

I’ve commented on this as well. He’s showing a pattern of picking up players with serious injuries and paying good money for them to boot. It’s too many to be coincidental or bad luck. Signing Flynn is inexcusable. I still believe he thinks he wheeling and dealing but in reality is being steered toward these damaged goods.
