The utter catrosphe of cutting Tyler Wilson

Looks like the Raiders are toast.

They cut Tyler Wilson, the No. 112 pick overall in the NFL draft. No team has admitted blowing a draft pick to that extent (although there is a miniscule chance Wilson could return on the practice squad) and it’s being presented as evidence that the Reggie McKenzie era is destined for failure.

Maybe so.

It’s pretty embarrassing to cut fourth-round draft pick in favor of undrafted free agent Matt McGloin. If only they’d selected McGloin instead, McKenzie and Co. would look as if they knew what they were doing.

Probably not, though. The Raiders would have been trashed for that pick too. That’s the way it works when you’re in charge of a losing team.

Basically, anything the Patriots and Ravens do is brilliant, and a lot of other teams have a lot left to be desired. And that’s not wrong. You look to successful business models to forecast success.

The only thing that counts is results, so here are a few thoughts to keep in mind (or promptly disregard):

– Being the team that cut the highest pick (No. 112) is embarrassing and it’s a mistake. Could have found another player at a different position that could contribute, maybe even start, on a roster with limited talent.

– It’s not the end of the world, JaMarcus Russell-style, not even close. Especially if McGloin performs to the level of the fourth-round pick Wilson was supposed to be. Teams whiff on fourth-round picks all the time. As colleague Steve Corkran pointed out, the Raiders dumped
Cal wide receiver Dameane Douglas in the Jon Gruden era (a fourth-round pick) and third-rounder Quintin Moses after Rob Ryan proclaimed him “unblockable.”

Neither of those mistakes changed the course of the franchise.

– The Raiders draft, as of now, looks much better than it did a month ago, even with the Wilson whiff. The first two picks, D.J. Hayden and Menelik Watson, will be important parts of the opener against Indianapolis on Sept. 8. During training camp, it didn’t look that way.

If Hayden and Watson are flops this year, that will be the reason for the demise of McKenzie, not because of missing on a quarterback who wasn’t going to play this year anyway.

– Unless Wilson surfaces on another team and thrives as a starter, it’s no more than an annoyance. If he’s Brett Favre, drafted by the Falcons but dumped to the Packers, then the Raiders have to live with it.

– Wilson fared well in the offseason in the rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory camp (although less so at each step) before floundering at training camp.

While the Allen was stressing “competition” throughout, the truth is that if Wilson had looked like the better prospect a year from now, he would have been the third quarterback. The Raiders can talk all they want about competing on the field, but McKenzie’s job is to project, and if he thought Wilson would be the better player in 2014, he would be a Raider today.

In terms of the way the Raiders have assembled talent since McKenzie arrived, they’ve got a lot to answer for if they flounder in 2013. The drafting and release of Wilson will be only one thing on a lengthy list.

Also, forget QB ratings based on a sample of 8 passes. I thought Pryor looked fine other than under throwing Ford on that fly pattern. That was really his only bad pass. Decisions seemed fine. Running ability was obviously great. He didn’t get a chance to do much that was special, but there was nothing to make me think he’s not ready or that he’s not clearly a superior option to Flynn.

    Pryor is our starting QB.
    =============================================
    Agree 100%

With the exception of the underthrown pick to Ford, I thought TP played remarkably well.

Don’t know what more he could have done.

His first series was sabotaged by a Mstrud drop that would have been a 3rd down conversion.

He was excellent his second series. Not just on the great runs either.

The back-shoulder toss that DMoore dropped was gorgeous. Perfect timing and placement.

Precisely the type of throw that TP needs to make to be a big time QB.

I don’t gv a sht what his QB rating was. TP played a heck of a game and I’ll be shocked if even the myopic Tits doesn’t appoint him the starter.

Yep. Along with some big runs.

Pryor didn’t “move the ball”. Runners, turnovers, and penalties did.

But they use that to support their guy, pretending they “only care about results”.

It’s either completely ignorant or dishonest.

Any football fan knows a high percentage passer in the WCO is more desirable than a low percentage one.

The WCO operates by throwing the ball underneath to receivers in stride and expecting YAC.

Notice the new players have always been healthy and played fulltime 4 years in college. Reggie knows what he is doing. You can bet he weighed the pros and cons on Tyler and Kluwe and acted on what he thought best.

He is not the bumbling fool many make him out to be. He is playing high stakes chess match with 31 other managers who will do anything to screw each other.

Reg is not like that. He is honest and will not lie, cheat and steal. That’s is his reputation. He will build the team his way and the team will reflect that. Players will know that he will give them a fair deal and not try to screw them.

That will go a long way to getting FA’s to play in Oakland, something they don’t want to do. Even high draft picks don’t want to come here. That wont change overnight.

Prior will never have a great quarterback numbers because he runs the ball

but that’s what makes him so great he so athletic he has the perfect size

but can he make all the throws consistently that’s the question

if Flynn tendinitis is gone he will start I guarantee it if he can’t move the ball

they will put prior in if we can get our running game going it will make all the difference in the world

Flynn can have a dink and dunk party with the wide receivers and tight ends

I think you’ll see a lot of two tight end sets with DMC and matchup nightmare

and we might see Watson pull on a run play as athletic as he is he should be good at it

    1) what QB produced more points
    2) what QB had the most 3 and outs during the preseason
    3) what QB had more drives into the red zone
    4) what QB took more sacks(maybe another factor u missed in your red zone analysis)
5)What QB had more turnovers in the preseason
    6) What QB had more rushing Yards
    7) What QB had more red zone drives with the 1st unit

Forget to even add how scared Flynn looked against the Bears. Bottom line , im not trying to convince you to come over to support Pryor. For all of you calling out Desmond Bryant.

Reggie did everything he could to keep him.

Does that tell you something about his value?.

He could not afford him, that’s the only reason he’s gone.

Very good player entering his prime, no need to bash him because he’s gone, you are not defending Reggie by doing so, it’s the opposite because he actually wanted him.

And his contract is 5 years with 12 million guaranteed, not 35 million, don’t pretend you don’t know that NFL contracts are heavily backloaded and that guaranteed money is the most important figure.

The Browns gave him a signing bonus of 5 million, plus another 5 million in the form of a roster bonus paid on march 15 and guaranteed his 2013 base salary of 2 million.

    More excuses.

Where did we come up with the money to sign CWood if we were so frigging broke? Or pea-armed Flynn? Or any free agent?.

    Gdog.

I was actually defending Des Bryant as a player and making the point Reggie wanted to keep him but got outbid.

I say it because most people are now calling Bryant garbage because he’s gone, but if Reggie had managed to re-sign him, they would be calling it a great move.

Just hating on the double standard some of these guys live by.

You could argue Reggie should have never let him become a Free Agente and should have signed him long-term prior to last year or mid-season when it would have been cheaper and you would have a very valid point.
