The utter catrosphe of cutting Tyler Wilson

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 1st, 2013 at 8:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Looks like the Raiders are toast.

They cut Tyler Wilson, the No. 112 pick overall in the NFL draft. No team has admitted blowing a draft pick to that extent (although there is a miniscule chance Wilson could return on the practice squad) and it’s being presented as evidence that the Reggie McKenzie era is destined for failure.

Maybe so.

It’s pretty embarrassing to cut fourth-round draft pick in favor of undrafted free agent Matt McGloin. If only they’d selected McGloin instead, McKenzie and Co. would look as if they knew what they were doing.

Probably not, though. The Raiders would have been trashed for that pick too. That’s the way it works when you’re in charge of a losing team.

Basically, anything the Patriots and Ravens do is brilliant, and a lot of other teams have a lot left to be desired. And that’s not wrong. You look to successful business models to forecast success.

The only thing that counts is results, so here are a few thoughts to keep in mind (or promptly disregard):

– Being the team that cut the highest pick (No. 112) is embarrassing and it’s a mistake. Could have found another player at a different position that could contribute, maybe even start, on a roster with limited talent.

– It’s not the end of the world, JaMarcus Russell-style, not even close. Especially if McGloin performs to the level of the fourth-round pick Wilson was supposed to be. Teams whiff on fourth-round picks all the time. As colleague Steve Corkran pointed out, the Raiders dumped
Cal wide receiver Dameane Douglas in the Jon Gruden era (a fourth-round pick) and third-rounder Quintin Moses after Rob Ryan proclaimed him “unblockable.”

Neither of those mistakes changed the course of the franchise.

– The Raiders draft, as of now, looks much better than it did a month ago, even with the Wilson whiff. The first two picks, D.J. Hayden and Menelik Watson, will be important parts of the opener against Indianapolis on Sept. 8. During training camp, it didn’t look that way.

If Hayden and Watson are flops this year, that will be the reason for the demise of McKenzie, not because of missing on a quarterback who wasn’t going to play this year anyway.

– Unless Wilson surfaces on another team and thrives as a starter, it’s no more than an annoyance. If he’s Brett Favre, drafted by the Falcons but dumped to the Packers, then the Raiders have to live with it.

– Wilson fared well in the offseason in the rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory camp (although less so at each step) before floundering at training camp.

While the Allen was stressing “competition” throughout, the truth is that if Wilson had looked like the better prospect a year from now, he would have been the third quarterback. The Raiders can talk all they want about competing on the field, but McKenzie’s job is to project, and if he thought Wilson would be the better player in 2014, he would be a Raider today.

In terms of the way the Raiders have assembled talent since McKenzie arrived, they’ve got a lot to answer for if they flounder in 2013. The drafting and release of Wilson will be only one thing on a lengthy list.

NYC—u mention manipulation and then immediately point out only things u think help pryors cause. Most of which had little do with him.

The qb didn’t “produce points”. The team did. And some if his drives started out in scoring territory or close to it, and most ended with FGs.

Turnovers were close. Flynn dealt with a horrendous line when he took five sacks. Even the supposed unsackable Pryor took sacks.

Flynn didn’t “look scared” anymore than Pryor. That’s just nonsense.

Why do Pryor supporters want to discuss everything BUT passing? That’s a qbs PRIMARY job.

U guys want ur guy no matter what.

  • Priesttj12

I know no one will believe this but I have been saying it since we traded Palmer for a guy we just CUT. We had 3 QB’s last year one they never took a look at until week 16 in practice in terms of getting reps. They didn’t think much of him until they saw him in practice and he beat out Leinart that week in practice to get the start week 17. They saw in that game changed the course of what they had in mind.

You guys in here may not have like what YOU saw in that game BUT YOU ARE NOT THEM. From that point on they have viewed TP as their eventual starter for this team. With that in mind why pay Palmer $15 mill to caddy for him. Why not go get a guy for insurance to take over until you know TP is ready.

In comes Flynn who is the consumate game manager and the plan was to start him and work TP in until they could start him and you’d have the perfect backup in Flynn.

What makes you people threw this idea out of the window is this hype that TP will never ahve started for teh Raiders because he cannot throw. They see different they see the kid everyday since week 16 last year. They knew what he needed to correct they didn’t know when or IF he would correct it. So the prudent thing to do was draft a kid in case that NEVER happens.

They even considered get VY to help until TP could solve it. But ask yourself have you EVER heard rumors of a Pryor trade EVER??? NO!

As I always say watch what they do NOT what they say. Now the kid they drafted was just CUT! If I had told you that a month ago you’d laugh in my face. It looks like Flynn may get benched. Flynn himself knew there was no way he could keep TP from ultimately taking that job the pressure on him caused him to never play relaxed. Thus the ugly 4 qrtrs. He lost that job because HE KNEW he could hold it,

This is going to make many of you very mad, that is how YOU KNOW it’s true. The ONLY QB who has never been in jeopardy of being CUT or traded or otherwise based on all reports has been Pryor. Out of all the QB’s starting from week 16 last year. What do the facts TELL YOU??

If they name him starter out of the 4 that came to camp what will taht tell you?? They had plans for him all TC they just accelerated them due to Flynn faceplant and Pryor stepping. NOTHING stopped them from traded for or adding another QB til this VERY MOMENT. Not one rumor of another QB comine in as the potential starter. Like I said watch what they do, if TP is named starter that should tell you alll you need to know………………period

Hate it cuss it fuss with it, the facts speak for themselves………….period

Let’s just hope this time we secure Jared Veldheer and Lamarr Houston BEFORE they hit the market.

So we don’t get into a bidding war because while we do have the most cap-space, why risk overpaying if another team willing to spend more starts throwing huge deals at them?.

    Lock them up now.

I got to pump the brakes on Watson a tad.

He played a half against backups, by the time it was the 3rd quarter he was playing against guys who were cut this weekend.
    ——-
i’ve heard this many times and I have to remind you folks of a few things.
    1. Seattle is stocked at the DL and pass rushing postition. Their number 1 line was out there in the first few series.
    2. Irvin who led all rookies with 8 sacks last year was still out there in the 3rd qtr.

We’re talking about a guy that has never played the LT position and missed all of camp along with 1 yr of D1 experience at RT. Is he supposed to struggle against 2nd and 3rd stringers if we hope he does well in this league? If Hayden makes the probowl in a few yrs, Watson is a perenial starting RT and Simms > Kelly/Seymour, then this was a great draft imho.

Next sunday we need to start by keeping the game at hand, that’s on the Defense.

In the 1st half of pre-season games, we allowed opponents to score on 16 out 18 possessions and the clock ran out on one of those scoreless drives.

That is beyond ridiculous, let’s just hope is not a sign of things to come.

The crowd will be loud and TP will be nervous, we need the Defense to step up and allow the offense to settle down.

I did the research, the Colts didn’t face a running QB or the Pistol-Zone Read offense at all last season or in this pre-season, they may not be as prepared as other teams are for it…we may have success with it.

  • Priesttj12

I also told you guys the day in practice when Flynn threw 3 picks in 4 passes, that will sound an ALARM in any coaches head. That is inconcieveable as far as a coach is concerned. 99% of all coaches believe YOU will play the way you practice. When Flynn looked like Tebow vs NO and then backed it up with a WORSE performance vs the Bears IMHO their minds were made up. They put TP in vs Seachickens as a starter to get him ready all he had to do was NOT embarrass them and thereby change their minds. An honest evaualtion of teh Chickens film would show TP not only validated their stance. He made them comfortable that the decision is the right one. You guys point to his stats they actually KNOW what happened what play was called and how he did as far as moving the team and handling the pressure. With a raw rookie at LT and unfamiliar surroundings he never showed panic he actually took charge. It’s what they want to see NOW but he must improve every outting he has trememdous pressure on him to play mistake free and (not so much physical as mental) aggressively. Picks and things that happen in a football will happen TP cannot show he lacks the fortitude to deal with it come back and get better. As long as he improves constantly he’ll keep that job……….period

That is if he gets it starting day1, if they go back to Flynn IMHO they’ll have hard time explaining it. Flynn scared them…….period

Correctamundo. For years, I listened to the Al-haters(where 99% of them never financially supported the team) cry about how they as “fans” had a right to constantly complain about Al not winning a superbowl lately. Of course, now they have more allegiance to a guy who has one 4-12 season on his plate over the man who built our history. Not to mention, the best hope for this season, relies on Al’s last pick.

Running ability was obviously great. He didn’t get a chance to do much that was special, but there was nothing to make me think he’s not ready or that he’s not clearly a superior option to Flynn.

    Pryor’s completion rate for Pre-Season 17/32 ..53.125%

    *************************************
I basically agree with Kirk, here’s why the read option puts him closer to the LOS while a traditional base offense keeps all options open. TP is such a phenomenal athlete running from the pocket is actually more dangerous. R/O opens him up to hits unnecessarily. I love the diamond formation because of the potential to run out of it also to utilize TE’s in short zones. Out TE’s are weapons after the catch. Like Hernendez in NE that guy was dangerous out of teh backfield. Rivera and Aus would be devastating runners as well as Reece.

TP makes this offense one of the most versatile in this league. Because of the athletes we have, I honestly believe our scouts and staff were on the same page when we drafted those TE’s they will play HEAVY formations most of the time. They’re going to make DC’s cover and tackle big fast athletes in open space. You will have to play a lot of nickle against us yet stop an aggressive running game. Go back and watch who was in the game on those formation with TP. It is beautiful to watch as the seaosn goes on and they develope that scheme I see us scoring a bunch of points because of our athleticism alone.

Raiderman9….You do know what Pryor’s QB rating was in this game ….Don’t you….It was 9.9…3/8 for 31 yards…(SUPER) ….McGloin and Wilson but beat those figures by a huge margin…

    Pryor’s completion rate for Pre-Season 17/32 ..53.125%

Flynns completion rate …19/27 for 70.37%

Why would you want a QB to Start who can’t complete Passes?….

“You want your quarterback to be able to make plays,’’ Allen said. “It really doesn’t matter what the box score says at the end of the game, how many yards they ran for or how many completions they had. What it really boils down to is how they move the team and are we effective and do we score enough points.’’

Let’s not get into the Al vs Reggie debate because there should not even be such a thing.

Al was a very ill man his last few years and made a ton of bad decisions, why compare Reggie to him?.

It is fully expected of Reggie to be a better GM than a sick, 80 year old man who had trouble walking.

Compare Reggie to the rest of the current GM’s around the League but, to be fair, you also have to take into account that Reggie inherited the worst cap situation in the League.

And like I said yesterday, the Panthers rookie GM Dave Gettleman took the job in January and was 16 over the cap, 7 months later he was 12 million UNDER the cap, that’s a 28 million turnaround in a single off-season, just goes to show you cap issues can get fixed soon if you come in with a sound plan and take your medicine right away.

“Hope some of you will be able to cry yourself to sleep after watching TP and crew putting a wrecking ball on the Colts.”

I was wondering what defense was going to stop Andrew Luck from throwing TD passes all day long?
