McFadden looks ‘explosive’

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, September 5th, 2013 at 4:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.

ALAMEDA — It’s no secret that, for the Raiders to have a fighting chance this season, Darren McFadden is going to have to regain the form that made him one of the game’s best all-around running backs.
The odds of that happening figure to be in McFadden’s favor, as well as the Raiders, given McFadden is entering the final season of his contract and he needs to show that he can make it through an entire season and be productive if he’s to land a lucrative second contract.
McFadden also is motivated by wanting to show that last season was a fluke and more to do with the blocking scheme than his inability to perform at a high level anymore.
The Raiders did their part by firing offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and offensive line coach Frank Pollack and bringing in Greg Olson and Tony Sparano to take their places, respectively. That meant the end of the zone-blocking scheme and the return of the power-blocking scheme that McFadden flourished in during the 2010 and ’11 seasons.
Coach Dennis Allen likes what he sees from McFadden so far, though we won’t get a true gauge until Sunday, at the earliest, when the Raiders play the Indianapolis Colts in the teams’ regular-season opener.
“He’s looked explosive in practices so far,” Allen said.
Olson said McFadden is someone that others look up to in the locker room and on the field. Again, that’s just another sign of the Raiders taking their cue from McFadden in many ways.
“Darren McFadden is also one of those players that’s gone some pelts on the wall, that’s played in some games that’s played well in some games,” Olson said. “He provides to me, for a young team, a professionalism about himself for other guys to follow.”
The Raiders offense hopes to ride McFadden to the playoffs. If not, certainly more than the career-worst 3.3 yards he averaged last season.
During that time, McFadden failed to bust many long runs. He had a long touchdown run against the Steelers early in the season and then spent the rest of the season stuck in neutral.
“Really he’s a guy that there may be some 2-yard runs, some 3-yard runs maybe a 4 and then boom, you pop one,” Allen said. “That’s our anticipation, that’s our hope. We’re hoping we can give him a crease and he can break off a couple of big runs.”
McFadden’s best seasons came under Hue Jackson, who was the offensive coordinator in 2010 and the head coach in 2011. Jackson said one of the first things he did when he was hired by the Raiders was to approach McFadden and ask him for a list of plays that he liked to run.
McFadden laughed at Jackson and said he didn’t think Jackson could get that past then-owner Al Davis. Jackson pulled it off. Away McFadden went. He averaged better than 5 yards each season.
Olson said he didn’t go that route. Instead, he and other coaches watched all of McFadden’s rushes during his Raiders career.
“We didn’t discuss it with him,” Olson said. “We got started before we had a chance to meet with the players and we put in the scheme. Along the way, we tried to get a feel for what he’s comfortable, the scheme that he’s comfortable running in, and we tried to help adapt to that.”

not saying that he is, but Mcfadden sure looks like he’s tired of football. I expect one more good year out of him, because he’s certainly not tired of cashing those big paychecks. plays for the money though. has no love for the game.

the Vikings are crazy. they don’t have a Darren Sproles type scatback to catch passes out of the backfield or any “wave of the future” TE’s

just two guys [Rudolph & Carlson] that compare to Zach Miller, Kevin Boss, Brandon Myers, Jeron Mustard, etc

is there something to that rumor, perhaps?

surely not, I mean everybody on Reggie’s roster “loves football” right?

    @G123

we are set with guys like Reece & Olewale at FB … Ausberry & Rivera at TE

I’m sure there are a few. By Reggie’s will, he opted to bring on a bunch of one year mercenaries. guys that play for pay. Some will say that’s just what the doc ordered to get rid of the old scholarships. but Reggie took to cleaning house to the extreme, imo.

LaMont Jordon did very well under Turner, 1025 yards rushing and 563 receiving…Are you thinking of LaMont under Shell?

Ryan Matthews is always hurt, have to take the field to do well. Two years ago he was over +1000 yards rushing and 455 yards receiving and went to the Pro Bowl.

I’ll take both of Minny’s TE’s over ours. Wouldn’t have minded having B’mores FB Leach. Loved the block he laid on Rice’s TD. But he was out of Reggies price range. Just win baby!…on a budget.

Most on the blog are seeing our reality as one of inter dependent variables as opposed to simply did we win more games than last year.

For example, TALENT and COMPENSATION are linked in the NFL with the salary cap. No one can look at one without considering the other.

8-8, $30 million over the cap with no draft picks is terrible. The mortgaging of our future was sad and we are paying for it now.
Again if you need a scapegoat look at the Raiders prior to 2012.

Superficial criticisms of “management” are falling on deaf ears with most on this blog.

I am in no way condemning the LIFE LONG body of work Mr. Davis is to be commended for during his association with the AFL/NFL and the Raiders.

At the same time I am a realist and saw what was happening to our franchise over the last ten agonizing years.

Sad to say this is a 3-5 year fix.

…but did HE say it? Weird we’re talking about him being tired of football when the title of this post is saying how “explosive” he looks.

Watching preseason I didn’t see it.

You wait and see, Darren McFadden will go into beast mode. He will shock the NFL world. Look for 1500 yards, 70 catches, 12 TDs, 5+ ypc. He’ll be celebrated as the comeback player of the year. He’ll get paid another $60 million…

and he’ll go back into Jacoby Ford 12 mode.

Still would’ve rather had Jarvis Jones, but what I saw of Hayden in the pre-season made an impression on me. He’s rusty, but you can see the skills. He was sticking his nose in and tackling without hesitatino too. Fearless kid, I like that.

Even if DMac has another 2011 season this year, I’m not sure I’d go north of 3 years/$33M for an extension.

  • willy91137

our defense should be much better this year we had no defenses back and we finished 18th

we have decent cornerbacks this year and I think we have some pass rush that we have not seen

we will not be the pushover that we were last year we will not get blown out of games

we will lose games by 7 to 10 points and next year we can build off that

with Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback we should be a pretty high-powered

offense we can pick up some good offense lineman in free agency next year

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

great game by manning, 7 tds in a game?!?!?

when peyton starts the sam wyche sugar huddle and runs that spread offense he is a machine.

Is arm isnt nearly as strong as it was but he make sup for it with anticipation timing and accuracy.

fun to watch when he is dialed in like that. Clealry the greatest stat producing qb ever. i give him a slight edge over marino for his superbowl win.

Dont get me wrong i would never put peyton on a level with guys like montana, young or elway. Those guys found a way to be thier greatest at the biggest moments in the biggest games and won multiple bowls.

However for nintendo time tecmo bowl regular season high scores, cane beat manning. he has choked far too many times to be in my top all time qb list.

  • Charlie

    Very eloquent.

    RR

Your words were “the hands they were dealt”. Mr. Davis regrettably did a great deal of damage during the last ten years.

Multi year contracts with no offset language (Routt, Wimbley, Henderson, Boss etc.) do not disappear overnight. They carry into the future.

The missed opportunity of poor draft picks in JR, McClain, Bey, Jolley, Harris, Brayton, Gallery, Grove etc. etc. etc. far outweigh the positives of Wiz II, Houston and Veld.

Just a couple of very obvious examples of how past decisions can impact the present and future.

This is a complex problem and it will take time to unravel.
    Sorry.

Someone will take a chance on DMC to resurrect his career ala Fred Taylor if he can stay healthy this year. someone will give him a 4th year. of course, none of that matters since contracts aren’t fully gtd in the NFL like they are in MLB and NBA.

  • SilverNBlackPA

I said this months ago and I’ll say it again. There’s two things I’m looking for in the near future

    1) 6 wins this year. If they can’t at least split with the Chargers and Chiefs and tack on wins against the Jags, Jets, Titans and 1 other team (Steelers?), then they’re not showing progress and Allen should go.

    2) 10 wins next year (no more excuses. All that dead money is gone) and if they don’t, then Reggie should go.

Haven’t heard anything about the players. According to Mike Silver “some in the building” think Pryor is a hopeless cause and McGloin should get a shot but that Mark Davis wants to see what Pryor can do.

I’ve read elsewhere that Greg Olson really likes Pryor, though, so whoever it is, it isn’t him down on TP2.
