Grading the Raiders

Grading the Raiders

Pass offense

Terrelle Pryor was 19 of 29 for 217 yards, one touchdown and two costly interceptions. The mistakes hurt, but after the first one, Pryor shook it off and made a number of nice throws. He timed slant passes well, although he put both Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore in harm’s way of fast-closing defenders. He hit passes in the clutch for key first downs. He is a better game passer than a practice passer. Grade: C-plus

Rush offense

With Pryor rushing for a franchise record (for a quarterback) 112 yards on 13 carries, the Raiders had 171 yards rushing and averaged 5.2 yards per carry. It was tough going for Darren McFadden on conventional running plays, however, as he averaged 2.8 per attempt. On a 9-yard burst up the middle, McFadden showed some of his old burst. Grade: B

Pass defense:

Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck was 8-for-8 for 113 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions early in the second quarter _ a perfect 158.3 passer rating at the time. But the Raiders were able to confuse Luck enough to slow the Colts down, and they had only one more touchdown the rest of the evening. Tracy Porter had near-perfect coverage on Reggie Wayne at least twice and gave up completions anyway _ Luck was simply that good early in the game. Grade: C

Run defense

Indianapolis had 127 yards on 26 carries _ an average of 4.9 per attempt that is too high. Vick Ballard led the way with 63 yards on 13 attempts. Tackling was an issue on a 9-yard break out of the pocket by Luck, as Kevin Burnett bounced off the quarterback. Luck’s 19-yard touchdown run through an open middle accounted for the game-winning points. C

Special teams

Jacoby Ford returned a pair of kickoffs 47 yards and Phillip Adams had a 5-yard punt return and a fair catch. Marquette King had only a 29.0 net on two punts. Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 38-yard field goal but missed from 48 after going the entire 2012 season without a miss from inside the 50. Nothing game-changing here, but nothing terrible, either. Grade: C

Coaching:

Dennis Allen had his team ready to play. They’ve clearly filtered out all the talk about their weak roster and seem to have a belief they can compete with anyone. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson’s game plan was a nice mixture of read option with passing plays that play to Pryor’s strengths. The makeshift offensive line fared well. Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver dialed up enough “active’’ players to keep Luck off-balance after a strong start. Grade: B

I think on 1st.down on the 8 yard line with 1:48, and 1 time out we should have ran the ball. other than that I thought olsen called a good game.
    llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Why, the team wasn’t running very well cause of DMC and the Colts D was stopping Pryors scrambling behind the line of scrimmage. Pryor just screwed up. A young QB mistake, that’s all.

    Actually, no, you don’t.
Cry when your kid is born.
Cry when you get picked in the draft.
    Cry when you lose someone.

    but cry after a loss?
Anyway you spin it, being an emotional wreck in the locker room, after a loss, is not what leaders do.

    Just saying.

One of the most refreshing things about the game, that isn’t getting too much attention is,

    ZERO 3 and Out’s…..THAT’s HUGE.

Defense got some rest on Sunday. Fight their butts off to force a punt, and only getting 3 plays off to grab a splash of water and undo the chin-strap just KILLED them in the past.

TP helped our Defense as much as anything else.

  • SilverNBlackPA

I’m not worried about DMC so much. I realize he struggled to get his YPC up, but the big thing that is new (to me?) is that he has the boom! play sprinkled in. Just ride him and be patient and boom!

    That’s funny…
A lot of the neck talkers were predicting mostly 3 and outs.

  • SilverNBlackPA

Said above: we weren’t making the playoffs this year anyway.

For right now, give me Pryor almost pulling a game out over another pedestrian blowout. Now I want to see him get better. Beating up on an easy mark in Jacksonville would be a good start before what *fingers crossed* may be a national unveiling in Denver.

But first things first. Crush the kitties.

  • guest123

It’s gonna be a long season. But at least it will be watchable football. Not a slow death march. That should put butts in the seats, and give us something to build on.

  • SnBG

The D kept us in this game. Should get better as the season goes along. Pryor should also get better. I am worried about DMC. He seems to have lost it.

  • RaidingTexas

He will also lead the team in drops and lazy routes.

    ——————————————

There’s a faction of idiots in here that refuse to acknowledge the truth about DMac and DMoore, and hold Jano responsible for a missed FG even though the rest of the world, King included, knows it was a bad hold.

Dmac is taken down easily in open space and drops the easiest pass you’ll ever see, but somehow it’s the OL’s fault. They only remember the plays DMoore makes and never the ones he doesn’t.

  • dirkdiggler

raiders are entertaining with Pryor. but they’re still a 5-11 team. team has no legit QB. but hey i don’t want to drop a duece on the super bowl parade that’s scheduled for OAK.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

    offensive line struggles

This was no surprise with so many guys moving potions and so on. yet the most glaring weakness is in the middle. Pryor dropped back to pass 29 times and was only able to step into the pocket and throw 6 or seven times

    this was unacceptable.

The o line was also not very good run blocking for dmac. he did his best to run people over but i would like to see more push and some creases for him.

Yup, after watching this DMAC highlight video you can clearly tell he has lost a step. All he does now is run straight. No jukes, stutter steps, or cuts. Must be the foot thing. Scared to get hurt. He used to run “Hard” He’s not that old.

Have to watch it obviously, but I saw a couple people saying Lucas Nix got worked over pretty good. Can anyone confirm?

  • Thec

Making the tournament will be determined by the 53 men that lace them up, not the Semi’s

  • SnBG

Well lost because Jano missed the FG. the D let Luck run for a TD amd Pryor made a few mistakes. These things can be fixed.

  • SilverNBlackPA

I said 6-10 before the game in Indy. Depending on how the Dischargers look tonight, I may raise it to 7-9 ;)

  • R8erEduc8er

I don’t think our run game is creative enough. Looks like all we do is crash our linemen into the d-linemen and hope Dmac bust one. Where’s the pulling? Where’s the misdirections? All the d-linemen have to do is put a helmet on a helmet and their lbs are free to take Dmac out.

  • SpudRaider

Now before anyone says I’m crazy hear me out. I think that Flynn has HUGE trade potential. We wait until next year after the draft than trade him to a team w/ a new, but questionable starting QB. The way it has worked out for SeaHawks & the RAIDERS, some desperate GM will pick him up just for talisman for good luck.

  • willy91137

you guys are getting your panties all in a bundle over how prior is playing

he made some mistakes that cost us the game which that seems to be MO right now

he’s got 15 more games to play let’s see how he does less see if there’s anything there that can take us to the promised land

and as far as McFadden goes you’ll see him pick it up once he get that OF line straightened out
that line is so inexperienced I don’t know if the even have to make line calls

got some of them guys have only been on the team for to day’s one-game and he no good???

we will probably run all over Jacksonville if they don’t run all over us

that game scares me and I hope DA gets them pumped up

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

    Fellas. Why we were competitive?

    1) Pryor: awesome.
    2) Disciplined D.
    3) Took some chances blitzing Luck.

    Why we lost?
    1) Lost turnover battle.
    2) Jano miss from 48.
    3) Needed 1 quarter to get going.

    Should beat JAX at home.

  • spiff

post 456 : I say run the ball ‘cuz we had the time. also we were on the 8 yard line. try to get closer to the goal line. just my opinion. either way…….

This a patch work line, what do you expect. They played pretty well and there is no excuse for DMC this year. He’s about done.

  • SnBG

If you look at the first play of the game it was a pass and DMC wiffed on his blocking assignment and Pryor had to get the ball out a little faster than he wanted. The rest of the line did fine

  • SilverNBlackPA

I wouldn’t mind seeing Pryor turn into a sort of proto-Ben Roethlisberger who excels when everything goes to hell.

found the video of Pryor getting sacked:

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-fantasy/0ap2000000241219/Colts-defense-sack-16-yd-loss

that was indeed on Barned #69

Pryor had 3 seconds to throw (not much) or throw it away. FWIW – he tried to throw it away, but didn’t see Mathis coming until the last second – he was looking right (for Moore & Streater) dangerous play trying to toss the ball. if that hits behind the LOS, it’s a fumble instead of just a sack

Ridiculous. Yes, he cost us the game, but he’s the reason we even in a position to win the game in the first place.
