Grading the Raiders

Grading the Raiders

Pass offense

Terrelle Pryor was 19 of 29 for 217 yards, one touchdown and two costly interceptions. The mistakes hurt, but after the first one, Pryor shook it off and made a number of nice throws. He timed slant passes well, although he put both Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore in harm’s way of fast-closing defenders. He hit passes in the clutch for key first downs. He is a better game passer than a practice passer. Grade: C-plus

Rush offense

With Pryor rushing for a franchise record (for a quarterback) 112 yards on 13 carries, the Raiders had 171 yards rushing and averaged 5.2 yards per carry. It was tough going for Darren McFadden on conventional running plays, however, as he averaged 2.8 per attempt. On a 9-yard burst up the middle, McFadden showed some of his old burst. Grade: B

Pass defense:

Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck was 8-for-8 for 113 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions early in the second quarter _ a perfect 158.3 passer rating at the time. But the Raiders were able to confuse Luck enough to slow the Colts down, and they had only one more touchdown the rest of the evening. Tracy Porter had near-perfect coverage on Reggie Wayne at least twice and gave up completions anyway _ Luck was simply that good early in the game. Grade: C

Run defense

Indianapolis had 127 yards on 26 carries _ an average of 4.9 per attempt that is too high. Vick Ballard led the way with 63 yards on 13 attempts. Tackling was an issue on a 9-yard break out of the pocket by Luck, as Kevin Burnett bounced off the quarterback. Luck’s 19-yard touchdown run through an open middle accounted for the game-winning points. C

Special teams

Jacoby Ford returned a pair of kickoffs 47 yards and Phillip Adams had a 5-yard punt return and a fair catch. Marquette King had only a 29.0 net on two punts. Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 38-yard field goal but missed from 48 after going the entire 2012 season without a miss from inside the 50. Nothing game-changing here, but nothing terrible, either. Grade: C

Coaching:

Dennis Allen had his team ready to play. They’ve clearly filtered out all the talk about their weak roster and seem to have a belief they can compete with anyone. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson’s game plan was a nice mixture of read option with passing plays that play to Pryor’s strengths. The makeshift offensive line fared well. Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver dialed up enough “active’’ players to keep Luck off-balance after a strong start. Grade: B

The Colts D was fu*kin SPENT in the 4th. Unfortunately, I think TP was too.

I don’t think the staff actually BELIEVED they’d be in the position to win this thing late in the 4th.

There we were 1st and goal from the 8 with a minute some left…..Colts GASPING for air, sweat rolling down their faces, hands on hips, wincing in pain…

I can just imagine, the sideline getting Buck fever

(When a hunter stumbles upon a deer up close, and panics. Raises the rifle and starts firing away and can’t hit what’s 15 feet away.)

They all needed to just settle the hell down.

Now they KNOW we can get there…Need to be ready to take advantage of that time.

I don’t think our run game is creative enough. Looks like all we do is crash our linemen into the d-linemen and hope Dmac bust one. Where’s the pulling? Where’s the misdirections? All the d-linemen have to do is put a helmet on a helmet and their lbs are free to take Dmac out.
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
This a patch work line, what do you expect. They played pretty well and there is no excuse for DMC this year. He’s about done.
    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Not just yesterday’s game. Every game since Satele left…don’t think I’ve seen a lineman pull on a run play since.

i would like to call the coaching staff out on the way they have set up this team for failure.

Did anyone notice all of the trouble the raiders had prevsnap? Especially in the waning moments of the game, it was chaos.

The fact that plays took so long to get in, and it took so long to get the ball snapped was indicative of the failure on the staff to prepare this team.

remember THIS IS NOT THE OFFENSE THE STARTERS HAVE BEEN RUNING OR INSTALLING ALL OFFSEASON!!!

Instead the raiders spent all ota, mini camp and most of the preseason building matt flynns offense, and keeping pryor in a so clalled package. This has clealry backfired as flynn looks to be kyle boller -ing his way out of the nfl, and the raiders are now scrambling to build and install a new hybrid offense.

This affects the coaches as they feel their way through calling theoffense and reading their players ability to match the tempo.

We saw personnel gaffs and penalties with too many men in the huddle. we saw the clock at zero and delay of game. we saw snaps at zero with players barley lined up and loloking like they were not sure of where they were supposed to be. Why? because this offense is new to them.

Also the in game coaching was questionable. first and goal from the 8 pryor just made a huge play to pick up the first down, every body was sucking wind. the colts werwe reeling and the raiders were frantic.

    coach, ….call a time out.

Call a time out and set up the final series of plays. take time to remind your young qb of important things like not taking sacks. Make certain that everybody knows their assignments and keys so the line doestnt fall apart on the next play , like they ended up doing.

Call a time out and calm your young qb and young team, instead they let it descend into madness.

These procedural things are the reason you have ota and min camp in the first place. Wasted all of that time installing an offense we are not even running. So under allen that is essentially 3 offense in 1 season and 1 game?!?!?!

Well at least this time he has a good offense growing with the right young qb.

No disagree, they where stopping the run and stopping Pryor from running. That’s what the Colts expecter Pryor to do. Pryor needs to become a better decision maker and he needs to make those decisions faster. He also was a bit rattled with all of the pressure so he needs to get more experience and relax.

    1) Lost turnover battle.

FGs are not a 100% play, 80-90% usually, we missed, we left 9 points on the board, two ints and missed FGs, we don’t throw that first pick maybe we get the first FG attempt early with the score tied and there are less jitters in the nerves, maybe Pryor hits Reece on a screen for a TD, maybe we something worse happens, we played as a team, we played knowing we could beat anybody, even against a franchise QB, whom we will face twice in a row after Jax.
