Pryor named starter for Raiders vs. Jaguars

ALAMEDA – There won’t be a quarterback guessing game in Oakland this week.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen confirmed the expected Monday, declaring Terrelle Pryor the starter for Sunday’s home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Pryor’s strong performance Sunday in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ starting quarterback job grew less stable. The team announced that starter Blaine Gabbert won’t play due to a hand injury suffered in his team’s opener. Instead, Jacksonville will go with Chad Henne, who relieved an injured Gabbert early in a game against the Raiders in Oakland last season.
Pryor passed for 217 yards and rushed for a league-high 112 yards in the Raiders 21-17 loss to the Colts. He was intercepted twice, including on the Raiders final play deep in Colts territory.
“The great ones find a way to get in the end zone in the clutch,” Pryor said Monday. “I missed out on that. I wasn’t so great (Sunday).”
Pryor started only one game his first two NFL seasons. He received the nod against the Colts based on the fact he outperformed Matt Flynn during exhibition games.
He called his performance Sunday “awful.” Allen said that shows Pryor’s passion and dedication. Just the same, there’s plenty of room for improvement.
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he was awful,” Allen said Monday, “but he also understands that there’s some critical mistakes in the game that we got to get corrected because we can’t have those.”

– Running back Darren McFadden managed only 48 yards rushing and averaged 2.8 yards on his 17 carries.
Even so, Allen said he remains convinced that McFadden is on the verge of a breakout season.
“I’m not concerned with who gets the yards,” Allen said. “We were able to run and run effectively. Darren’s going to get his touches. Darren’s going to get his yards.”
Allen said there were some “opportunities” for the Raiders to spring McFadden for long runs. That failed to materialize, for one reason or other.
Last season, McFadden averaged a career-low 3.3 yards rushing. A switch from a zone-blocking scheme to a power-blocking scheme is expected to benefit McFadden.
“I’m still pleased with where Darren is.” Allen said. “I still think he’s going to have a good year.”

– First-year player Marquette King replaced veteran Shane Lechler this season not only as the Raiders punter but as their holder on field-goal and extra-point attempts.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski worked exclusively with Lechler from 2000-12. He said this offseason that he and King concentrated on getting in synch.
On Sunday, Janikowski missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt. King after the game accepted blame.
Not so fast, Allen said.
“The hold was fine,” Allen said. “SeaBass just missed the kick. That’s something he doesn’t do often.”
To that end, Allen said, King and Janikowski will spend more time working together to lessen the likelihood of any issues cropping up.

– The Raiders offensive line allowed only one sack Sunday and held up pretty well, by most accounts, despite two new starters and Khalif Barnes moving from right tackle to left.
“All things considered, a pretty good overall performance for the O-line in the first (game),” center Stefen Wisniewski said.
Allen said the offensive line held up its end.
“For mixing and matching some guys and moving some guys around … I was pleased with the way the offensive line played,” Allen said.

– Strong safety Tyvon Branch emerged from the Colts game with a sore shoulder. Allen said none of his other players suffered serious injuries.

– Pryor leads the league in rushing after his 112-yard effort Sunday. Also, Pryor was one of only two players that rushed for 100 yards or more through Sunday’s games.

who cares if your punter/holder can throw?

That happens maybe twice a year [on trick plays]
    ——

Probably more important if he can run in case of a bad snap. We know King can run

Nope. He’s too valuable as a receiver. Send him down field.

i strongly suspect this is done purposely. i strongly suspect that this isnt simply a local phenomenon and is a standard practice for the industry. The evidence points to this conclusion, both from a contemporary and historical sense.

I strongly suspect the root goes back to teddy roosvelt and his devilish code ingrained form the very root of his vision during the creation of the qb position for football.

    >> You are a conspiracy theorist aren’t u?you pointed out a different standard and expectation being put on Pryor, and anybody with an 80 IQ can read the race conspiracy under current to what you wrote. you’re not slick man. and i explained it too you. white fans will relate to a white QB easier just how YOU relate to Pryor easier. thats all it is, its not some conspiracy against Pryor. you must be bored and looking for some victim status and also maybe people are tired of watching this team suck ass every year and are pessimistic instinctively about the raiders.

Why not run the ball with jano instead? Last time I checked he had that amazing 6.3 speed and can be a chain mover on third downs!

    TP2 = Randall Cunningham

    in RC’s 3rd year (1987) he threw for 2786 yards & 23 TD’s and rushed for 505 yards & 3 TD’s

    223/406 (54.9 completion %) 12 INT’s and he was sacked 54 times … QB Rating = 83

Eagles won 7 games that year. 2nd in the NFC East

    >>> completion % is MISLEADING. totally different era, 23 TDs to 12 INTS is excellent. Pryor won’t do that. Cunningham didn’t run much at all. Pryor is already the leading rusher. they aren’t the same player, its really not close. you’re dreaming.

  • The Big Banana

Heck, with Jano as HB and Mastrud the down field option, maybe we should have Flynn hold and make it a trifecta. Who can stop a fake punt with those 3? Money.

modern QBs play in a pass friendly RULE set. the whole league is set up for passing. can’t touch WRS anymore, i it changed about 10 years ago. Peyton manning kept losing to the PATS and the NFL wanted to see more passing and less defense. DING DING! much harder to complete 65% even 20 years ago. lot of the passing stats we see now are propped up IMO.

teams are going to play more Zone against Pryor. keep eyes on him, make him read the coverages. Raiders WRS will have to actually read coverages too, could be a problem with the WRS this team has. McSnuggles needs to start running better. Pryor won’t do it all by himself.

It would be nice to pick one if we didn’t have so many needs,

The way I see it, we might need a qb if Pryor fails , a RB If DMac leaves and a pass rusher if none else fails. If we become a team to be out of the top 5 we should get that stud DT out of Norte dame or any good OLineman

    yeah buddy,

Have Mustard hold…….Then we’ll all be in suspense as to which side the “Grease Lightning” will burn.

It’ll be straight “Kung Fu Hustle” type running baby.

  • Bigmike34

    FACTS….

In the Indy game there were a total of 63 plays by the Raiders..in 13 of those plays Pryor ran the ball…in 29 of those plays he passed the ball….The other 21 plays were probably Kicks, Field goals extra Points handoffs etc….

  • Bigmike34

Actually the other 21 plays noted above were Handoff’s

  • Bigmike34

In his two starts Flynn was more successful in Each of those starts (New England and Detroit) they Pryor will ever be….Flynn consistently has a 70% Completion Rate…But lets take a look at their two starts…

    Flynn..New England His first start…24/37 for 251 yards and 3 TDs…QB rating 100.2

Flynn… Detroit…31/44 480 yards and 6 TDs…136.4 QB rating…Some dumbo’s say Yea but Flynn played on a really good team with great receivers…TRUE, He played with MOST of the SAME Receivers that RODGERS Threw the ball to…and he set TWO ALL TIME GB RECORDS FOR PASSING TDs and YARDS PASSING IN A GAME

    ===================================

    PRYOR…SD..13/28 150 yards 2 TDs…

    Pryor…Colts..19/29..217 yards..1.td 2 INT. 70.6 QB rating
    =================================
Open your eyes and your BRAIN and JUST LOOK AT THE NUMBERS….in his 4 years at GB, Flynn Played behind Rodgers one of the top 2 QBs in Football…he got 2 starts that were pretty darn Good the last One was exceptional …When his contract ran out he went to Seattle for good money…Before the 3 Pre Season game his elbow Problem flared up and Wilson got the Start and never looked Back….Flynn then came to us. this year…again he was scheduled to start the opening game and his ELBOW Flared up during the 3rd Critical Preseason Game…

Pryor Stunk the joint up in Seattle with a 9.9 QB Rating)
and Flynn would have started our 1st game but the Damn Elbow thing was not ready to go

Flynn is an exceptional QB…He has been VERY well Trained…and he is now ready to go again…UNFORTUNATELY THE GUY HAS HAD TERRIBLE LUCK

  • Bigmike34

People…Some are Comparing Pryors Running to Randal Cunningham….FACT Cunningham did not run Nearly as much as Pryor….I can think of only one QB that Has…TEABOW..

Against the Colts…A game That Pryor Lost for us with Two Interceptions in the Red Zone…Good QBs Don’t do that…Inexperienced Rookies do that….He ran 13 times BIG DEAL…He set a team Rushing Record for a QB…BIG DEAL…WE LOST because he THREW Critical Interceptions..

Pryor has had Three Pre-Season’s of training with the RAIDERS…HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER….In college he didn’t need to learn to stay in the Pocket…to just Run Was OK……BUT…..HE IS NOW IN THE NFL….The Guy has never learned to be an NFL QB…He hasn’t even grown up Yet…

A NFL PLAYER that CRIES because he had a Bad Day and cost the team a Win..MY GOD…AL DAVIS has to be Spinning in his Grave…Wondering why he drafted this guy that NO OTHER NFL TEAM WANTED….Even with all of his god given Talent..of Speed and Size….God apparently held back on ability to throw a ball accurately…

The sports writers SAY THIS GUY HAS REALLY IMPROVED…His Ball Dosen’t wabble as much as Last year when he passes…HE CAN THROW A SPIRIAL…THAT IS LIKE SAYING HE DOESN’T SWEAT MUCH FOR A FAT GUY (I know he is not fat incase any of you Dumbo’s Don’t understand what I said)

WHAT A JOKE…He is probably a hard worker, A nice Guy, has size and Speed and a strong ARM….BUT PRYOR IS NOT AN NFL QB…He could be a great receiver…

  • Bigmike34

    PRYOR

29 Passes (includes the 2 critical INTERCEPTIONS)

    21 Hand offs

13 RUNS…That is a load of Runs for an NFL QB….

The very best Young QBs Kaepernick, Luck, RG111, Wilson are being coached NOT TO RUN, How to stay in the Pocket and throw…WHY…Two Reasons…

    1) When a QB runs he will eventually become injured…the defenders Go after QBs with a vengeance

    2) If he runs Right or Left..(Mostly Right for Pryor) he cannot throw to the other side of the Field…He is giving away 1/2 the field …If he does mostly run to the Right…The defense will begin to force him to run left…he gives up the right side of the field and a guy that doesn’t throw well now has an even tougher Pass running to his left where he actually has to do something to get his body into position to throw.

WELL BIGMIKE He just needs more Training….HOGWASH this stuff is BASIC…He played football most of his life as a QB and he doesn’t even know the BASICS?…Doesn’t know not to throw across his body?…Keeps throwing interceptions in the Red Zone..as he did in Pre-Season also

IF at half-time of the Jacksonville Game….We are Behind 17-0 and Pryor looks terrible…DO YOU PRYOR LOVERS WANT HIM TO STAY IN THE GAME OR TO YOU THINK WE SHOULD LET FLYNN HAVE A GO or McGloin….and IF YOU SAY NO…Aren’t you demonstrating that you really don’t care if the Raiders Win or Lose as long as Pryor is in there …even if he is stinking it up …
